Lampard for life, surely?

When you have a player that just keeps on giving, you keep them don't you? Frank is a clever player who has adapted his game to compenstate for a natural reduction in pace - as such, he can concievably play at the top level for another 5-6 years. He is highly respected at home and abroad and is an outstanding ambassador for our club. We all know this, so what's the problem?

We have a lot of potentially great players in midfield, yes. But Frank IS a great player and there is always room for one of those.

The club haven't been particularly vocal in reassuring us about Frank's future. Does anyone out there actually think the club should let him go, seemingly so easily?

He is a Chelsea legend and can still do a job for us, but is it really viable to have a 34 year old squad player that's on about 140k a week? He's going to be on the bench a lot this season and for the rest of his Chelsea career. If he was willing to take a reasonable pay cut I would love for him to stay, but to stay on the same wage or anywhere near the same wage he's on now I don't know if it's the right decision to give him a new contract. I would like to keep him until the summer though.

He does but I know Roman wont give him one, really pisses me off we dud the same with Ballack aswell. We should know you need experience in the team to win things just ask the Arsenal fans.

The guy is a born leader not to mention a bloody good footballer.

Yeah he is 34 but today showed that when we need a lift he is the man to do it. He has given us and Roman FA cups, CL, EPL titles ect ect and we can't offer him 2 more years? Bollox!

Look at Beckham who had only a dash of the talent frank possesses, he was still being chased at 35/36 for teams like Milan, PSG ect......Frank has lots still to give and I'll be pissed if after everything he has done for Chelsea that he gets shown the door.

If he is willing to take a big pay cut then  I would love for him to stay, but to stay on the same high wages or wages anywhere near the current level  that he is paid now, well, i just dont think it is viable. Chelsea FC is a business to the people that run the club, and the bottom line is £££.

A 1yr + additional 1yr contract depending on peformances with a basic salary of no more than £60k would be fine...but any more than that, and we are paying too much. The board wont (or shouldnt) let sentimentality trump logic and worth.

On a seperate, non contract related note, it wasnt to long ago that people were critizing Lamps performances, asking for him to be dropped etc....funny how quickly things turn around. We football fans are a fickle bunch arent we!

Today Frankie showed we need him and need him bad. What a brilliant game from him 10/10 tonight. He was head and shoulders above anyone in the game. I'd give him 1+1 year extension with top salary.

If it is 1, or maximum 2 players who are still earning their keep, then I would argue it is.

The money spent on a contract for Lampard is not about his contribution on the field, for me. Its about the experience, the fact that there remains, on this team, someone who has been here since Chelsea turned "the corner" 9 years ago.

Now we have alot of young players coming into the club who are enthusiastic, but we are in a position where we dont have to wow them with money, we can entice them with trophies.

I dont think we are ever going back to the days where we have a whole squad that we are giving absurd wages to. So I dont think that keeping Frank on money that is disproportionate to his contribution these days is a huge sin. Not when he's on the verge of entering club lore.

Not the most scientific, but cost per goal based on transfer fee: Lampard (£11m) £57k; Torres (£50m) £1.9m. Value: Frank worth 34 Fernandos.

yet one is almost sure of a starting spot and the other won't even get a contract. Rational thinking.

Not having a go at you Damo, but I hate this kind of logic. It was a different club at that time, with a different transfer policy and different expectations. Since then football has gotten more bloated with money.

Not to mention Frank will be remembered as a greater player than Fernando ever was. At his peak Frank was the best player in the country, and considered the second best in the world by those hacks at UEFA

One year and yes I know it's FRANK LAMPARD. Same goes for Ash who I think is playing at a much lower level than Frank was playing at when he was 32.

Will understand if neither of them accept the deals though. The club has poured silly money down the throats of a lot many players. Sheva, Mutu etc. Currently Torres/Hazard earn more than Frank ever has and neither of the former have brought the levels of success Frank has. Also factor in  that the club has the likes of Essien,Malouda and Paulo on lucrative contracts who have not put in a decent performance in ages as opposed to Frank and Ash who still continue to contribute then it does seem petty on the club's part to be cribbing about their wages which are deservedly earned.

However if the board are not offering them a year at the very least then calls for castration of  BB, Gourlay  and ME is in order. These tools have just offered the likes of Mikel and  Ramires 5 year deals which is an effing joke! Rami's main asset is his pace, would love to see just how much of it he still has as he gets older and as for Mikel even a year is too much.

Frank's salary would be a drop in the ocean compared the many millions this club has pissed away on big money flops, players who have contributed nothing, and managers'compensation packages.

If the board are prepared to cast him aside at the end of the season then it's an insult to the man himself and to the Chelsea fans who consider him a legend.

I wouldn't put it past them at all.

Like the tweet says, 'Not the most scientific'. It was said in a 'tongue in cheek' fashion than anything else. He's shown his worth over the last few years. Today just reinforced the fact he should get a contract. Deserves to be able to retire at Chelsea and that he still has alot to offer.

I would be gutted to see him leave, my favourtie Chelsea player ever. Actually, if he left because the board wouldn't give him a contract because of his age and he actually wanted to stay I would be furious, not gutted.

Exactly

since when did having 'common sense' apply to anyone running the club...it's like they go out of the way to the dumb thing all of the time...they give dumb and dumber a run for their money

Once we get rid of Malouda come the end of the season, who I assume is on a ridiculously large pay packet, surely that can free up funds to keep Lamps on.

True, and I think there's more player we could get rid off to free up more funds. One of our backup keepers and then we have loads of players out on loan. Some are young and might become good enough one day, but there's also some who will not and others who are a bit older, like Essien and Benayoun.

Even of most of the players on loan probably have pretty low wages, there's still money to be saved. Ten of them might make up for atleast half of Lampards wages.
