Jose's style of play

Featured Replies

Which would you rather have- a well drilled machine of a team like the one we had in 05 or a team that plays fluid counterattacking football like Madrid in 11/12?

Edited by Mamizcar

The latter, no doubt, provided we have players and tactics who can defend a lead right to the end

Joses inter team were dire to watch, all physical, blocking and workers and get a goal on the break

Madrid better as had some flair thru renaldo, ozil and de Maria but also plenty blockers and grafters

I want to protect the 3 amigos at all cost and want fluid attack based play

If Jose can't do that then get a coach who can

i want a winning style of play. if its attractive then great, but if we win the premier league by winning 25 games 1-0 then i wont complain either, as long as the players are happy

So if we play like stoke and win 1-0 you'll be happy , not me

Chelsea history based on proper football mate, we have the players to win with style too

our 05 counter attacks were about as fluid as you can get

First thing's first and that's to sort out the defence. When we stop leaking stupid goals, then we can focus on the attacking side of it.

Why can't we have a 'well oiled machine' as well as a 'fluid counter-attacking side'?

Depending on the opposition, we have the squad to either camp in an opposing teams half and break them down, smash them on the counter with lightning quick players or go all out defensive.

I was initially apprehensive about Mourinho's return, no matter the feelings toward Benitez, we have been playing some wonderful stuff this season under him and RDM. I don't want our attacking philosophy to go straight out the window.

However we play it couldn't be any more boring to watch than United this year.

Difference is when it's Chelsea we get called boring and anti-football, when it is United it is consistent and dogged

Eh, there's no question that for the majority of the time we were very dire and boring under Mourinho.

One of the biggest problems was that we tended to play teams at their level. We would grind out results against the likes of Everton or Crystal Palace, but then play top-notch football against Arsenal. Mourinho didn't really get the team to impose themselves on the opposition anywhere near as much as a champion team needed to.

The second biggest problem was highlighted in that video too; how few goals were scored against set defenses. We've improved quite a bit in that regard, and our players are able to create opportunities even against packed defenses.

The third and final issue Mourinho will need to overcome is that team's approach to creating chances. The team often creates low % chances (eg. long shots) rather than trying to get players into clear scoring positions, nor do they create many chances overall. The reasons for this are varied- new players settling in, poor coaching (AVB, di Matteo and Benitez all recognised the problem but did little to amend it), reluctant strikers and a real lack of intention, confidence and accuracy in the passing.

These are pretty basic issues but at this level it often seems to be that coaches search for wide and complex reasons to very simple observations. I'm hoping second time around, and having much improved as a coach, Mourinho can buck that trend.

2004/05, Chelsea:

Fewest goals against in a Premier League season (15), most clean sheets kept in a season (25), most wins in a season (29), most consecutive away wins (9), and the most points in a season (95)

problem?

Were we hell, our attack was outstanding And fantastic to watch in his first 2 seasons, just because opposition fans say it was doesnt mean it was true. We bad 2 fantastic winners who were given freedom to attack but because they were expcted to track back and play to a pattern it was said to be caging them in. And let's be honest, the boring thing was simply a stick that the media and opposing fans used to beat us, because they had nothing else.

I can't believe some people thought we were actually boring in those years, we absolutely blitzed teams at times and more often than not, also is it our faulted knew how to edge these games that normally end level? There were a lot of jealous fans after we won the Premier League the first time, none more so than Liverpool and Arsenal fans (I think they thought they would dominate after there unbeaten season - I'm convinced this is why Wenger hates us so much, considering he pretty much got the better if us in all those years prior)

I don't want to take anything away from Jose, but I think the Champions League quarter final win in 2004 was a psychologically significant one. We hadn't been able to beat them in the 17 previous matches and then we do it at their place and in a big European match.

im aware of our history, but id rather not turn into arsenal. we want to be known for success, not for completing 800 passes a game and coming 4th in the league. there's a balance to be found. if we play like did under jose in 05 then ive got no worries whatsoever. i never saw us as particularly boring or unattractive, and with mata hazard and oscar in our squad there's very little chance of that happening. jose will be able to consistently win as well as playing good football. we CAN have our cake and eat it

We were a very exciting team when going at full pace

If there is one thing that stands out above all others with all these wonderful goals is that the ball was continually being moved forward, unlike in the past two seasons where we tend to stop and hold the ball up more often than not breaking the momentum, not saying we haven't scored some cracking goals but the fluidity hasn't been there as much.

Jose's always got the best out of players in hand. We are going to be like this season in terms of style but better in every way. Starting games better, being tighter in defence, reacting faster inside the game.

Jose can get our players to the next level. Think about if we get Oscar, Luiz and dare I say Torres playing at Mata's level.

jose never improves teams for me . when he was here before we never got any better in 2 and a bit season . we are solid and hard to beat under jose and that's the way he plays . much rather have pallergino wants the team to play right way and with the players we have now we should play so much better .

jose never improves teams

Go back and look at how União de Leiria were doing before Jose came along and how they did when he was their manager. Do the same for Porto, Chelsea and Inter and tell me he doesn't improve teams.

I would like a team that scores one more goal than the opposition in any year starting with this one 2013/2014.
