Excelent posts by Sergio7. I can confirm every word, and I'm also a Benfica follower.
Would just like to add something; Matic was an 8 at Benfica, not a 6, for those talking about a deep lying midfielder. He was (and is) NOT a Makelele player, nor a Javi Garcia (merely in terms of positioning). As Sergio said, he could dominate a 442 midfield like I've never seen before. A classic and quality BOX-TO-BOX.
Having said that, obviously surrounded by top quality players (where as in Benfica he WAS the top quality player) I'm thinking his moves will be much more restricted. In theory, he is the PERFECT complement for Ramires.

I feel the same, and that depresses me i really wanted Luiz to make it here (and especially as a DM)

Do you think Matic will feature at all? I don't. Too big a game. Maybe if we are coasting through (unlikely), perhaps.

He'll want him to have a good week's training under his belt, get to know his team mates and then play him.

Can anyone answer why/how we got Matic so (relatively) cheap? It just seems strange to me unless we either had a buyback clause, or Matic gave Benfica no choice somehow? But if that was the case, wouldn't Benfica have spilled the beans in a bid to explain this to their angry supporters?They sold Luiz for close to the same amount, Ramires for slightly less, Witsel for far far more, and apparently Matic has been outperforming the lot of them. So why so cheap?

Benfica are in debt and needed the money.

Wouldn't someone have been willing to offer more? I will admit I do not remember seeing Matic play since he left other than when they played us, but if he's everything people say he is..........

 

Either way its a great bit of business by the club (how often have we got to say that over the years?) and I am most definitely not complaining

We upped the eventual price of Markovic.

we need a player who isn't afraid to attempt forward passes from deep lying midfield positions threading the balls into the channels, lets hope this lad can do it.

The whole Mata being sold saga has made this transfer look forgotten.

For me it seems like a buyback, the transfer happened pretty quickly and for a good price, that never happens with the Portuguese sides.
