Paul Pogba - Needs to Sign!

Featured Replies

Yea, will be great to see Ruben plays for us next season. He is such a big tallent so I believe Jose make him shine for us.

Seems like Mourinho has faith in Loftus-Cheek.. I'd still love us to sign Pogba but why would Mourinho spend the money if he has faith in players already in the squad?

I don't really believe we can bring through talents like Loftus-Cheek, Ake etc, unless we drop our ambitions and start fighting for fourth place with Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal. I doubt we will see anyone making it through the academies of United and City in the near future either.

Our biggest problem in the second half of the season have been our central midfield and against PSG it didn't even stand a chance. I think that we need to look at 4-3-3 again and bring in better options then Mikel and Ramires.

I caught a bit of chelsea t.v last night; zouma and remy were guests. Apparently, zouma speaks to pogba on the phone and they're good friends, so maybe this could be a bit of a bargaining tool to bring him here. I don't think RLC will be a first teamer next year, but he'll no doubt be on the bench and get some games in the cups and occasional league games. I don't particularly want us to spend so much money on pogba, but it's not my choice and it's sounding more likely. I don't see us buying varane in the summer either now, as terry will stay another year and we have zouma/cahill/ivanovic so the need for varane isn't that urgent until maybe next summer.

Verratti is better than Pogba imo. But the negative aspect of him is he's a foul magnet.

don't really agree, but psg wouldnt sell anyhow. My pick would be vidal, but all 3 are world class.

Michael Cox reckons PSG would be a good move for Pogba:

http://www.espnfc.com/blog/espn-fc-united-blog/68/post/2364556/for-paul-pogbaparis-saint-germain-might-be-the-best-career-move

While obviously we'd all love Pogba to come to Chelsea, this move would raise the possibility of Matuidi becoming available... I certainly wouldn't say no.

So basically Cox's reasoning comes down to:

"Pogba should go to PSG because they're French and they don't have French players"

Well it's more about him being specifically Parisian than French, although obviously it's more nuanced than that. Neil Ashton (of all people) pointed out that all but two of the Chelsea under-21 side which played against Southampton were from within 50 miles of Cobham. Players being locals isn't necessarily a huge issue, but it's a nice perk if they are genuinely homegrown.

I would summarise Cox's argument as:

- PSG don't mind splashing out stupid amounts of money for big-name players

- Despite FFP restrictions PSG have enough players linked with moves away to be able to make up enough money to afford it

- PSG have, as of yet, failed to make the most of out Paris' appeal as a major city in the footballing arena

- Paul Pogba is from Paris (or thereabouts), which would help with the above point

- Paul Pogba is really good

- Real Madrid are arseholes

The only real criticism I have is that he writes off Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City as options without really giving any explanation as of why.

What I mean is that Cox argument seems to mostly be from PSG's perspective.

All the points you listed are pros from PSG point of view in that it would elevate them to sign Pogba for various reasons but where's the plus points for Pogba choosing to move to PSG?

He would arguably be moving from one league where he is pretty much nailed on to win the league every season to another side that is basically in the same position.

Were he to move to the Premier League he'd be playing in a division with at least 3 sides challenging for title and be playing against greater quality opposition more frequently which would aid his progression into become a better player.

I get the appeal of a move to PSG but personally for a player who is likely to have his pick of where he goes it would just seem a sideways step and show a lack of ambition (to me).

I don;t see the appeal of playing in France personally.

Yes PSG are a megaa club these days and have CL football but most of the season would be as entertaining as watching paint dry.

They don't even have Monaco anymore who did at least try to bring in the kind of players that could challenge PSG.

It's worse than the old Scottish leagues where there were only two teams who could win it...it's only one now.

We should go for pogba after getting rid of multiple fringe players

Like who?

We currently have 4 central midfield players for two positions.

Maybe we'd sell Oscar or Ramires to accommodate a Pogba type signing but as far as midfield is concerned one in one out is fine.

Is the French League really that bad? Monaco beat Arsenal who are in great form in the Premier League and second. PSG beat us of course and are only 1 point clear at the top of the table with Lyon and Marseilles close behind. As well as that, the gap between the top teams and the rest is next to none unlike the top 1 and 4 here being comfortable clear. It just doesn't seem like the French League is much, if at all behind us.

This is all based on European results and their table of course, not actually watching French football.  :laugh2:

Reason why it's so close is because they are all as bad as each other baring a few good teams.

Yet two French teams put out two English teams who are in the same or better relative league position.

Both of whom fall under the few good teams I mentioned.

Doesn't the Premier League have just a few good teams though? We wholeheartedly failed in Europe, including the Europa League teams.

Graham Hunter, the first person to announce the Cesc transfer has said that it'll be us or Barca for his signature.

He expects him to choose us as Barca's transfer ban may scupper the deal.

Where have you seen that, any links?

Sounds promising. If he comes in Ramires and/or Mikel would need to leave for RLC to "compete for a first team place" as Jose said he would, assuming Matic and Fabregas play alongside Pogba.

Presumably Loftus-Cheek would be Pogba's backup, which would more than likely spell the end for Ramires. Mikel would (in my conception) still operate as a backup for Matic and as a general cool head to bring on when things are getting hectic and we want to slow down the game and get our foot on the ball, we're playing especially defensively or when we need to defend a lead.

That would be one hell of a midfield though!
