Following Our Nearest and Dearest Rivals, 2014-15

Crazy demand; £150k/w is a lot of money, funny thing is I heard Henderson declined an £80k/w offer and wants £120k/w. I can see City maybe matching Sterling's demand but what planet is Henderson on?

I have no idea where these players get their figures from. Maybe Man City will go for him (they have a track record with English players, Milner, Barry, Lescott, Sinclair, Johnson) to replace their aging midfield, but to demand that salary is somewhat... optimistic.

It's the power of knowing he's one of their best players just now and of course his agent will be urging him to hold out.

There has been intrest from a few clubs and he would get that money elsewhere so really Liverpool are left short of options if they won't give him the money.

Rafa Benitez got sent to the stands yesterday after his Napoli side struggled to a last-minute point at home to 17th-placed Atalanta. It was their second point from the last four games, as they slipped into 5th place behind Sampdoria, only one point ahead of a resurgent Fiorentina in 6th. They are now five points off the Champions League places, meaning Rafa is likely to rekindle his love affair with the Europa League next season.

Apparently 34,000 fans saw a "shameful" performance from the referee:

Rafa Benitez:

“Maybe six referees are not enough it should be better to have eight indeed, some decisions could not be explained otherwise.

We had 8 clear chances, next they had the chance to convert their opening goal that I cannot understand how it could have been considered fair. Obviously, I reiterate it was difficult to be detected by 6 referees, I hope they will chose eight ones for the next challenge, maybe it will be better.

There is nothing to say about the game. We didn't win, we are ten challenges to go yet, but I do not want to speak of the final rankings, I just want to repeat that the foul suffered by Henrique was not promtly detected. I am convinced that the referee, the linesman and the fourth official saw the fouI. This is my match's comments.

I have never being cautioned by a yellow card in my career as a manager and I cannot explain how they could have ruled me out for misunderstanding. After having managed more than 600 matches, I have never being shown a yellow card, If I get angry there is a fair reason. Tonight's match result was influenced by an event that cannot be considered a fair football decision".

I know Saint Stevie apologised and his actions were seen during the match so I'm not really expecting any backlash or retrospective ban, but Skrtel on the other hand absolutely MUST receive the SAME punishment as Costa, I won't really have access to media outlets today until lunch time at least so I'd be grateful if someone could update it in here when it is announced. If it isn't addressed at the same speed as Costa's either then I really cannot see how there isn't some sort of agenda against our players. Perhaps not the scale that some believe but what Skrtel did the circumstances surrounding it is identical to Costa, they must simply hand down the same punishment.

I disagree Comparing the three incidents, Costa's "stamp" was by far the most innocuous. The contact he made with with Can looked to be far lighter - both in slow-motion and in real time than either Gerrrard or Skrtel. Furthermore, Costa has been credited with having eyes in the back of his head, having been deemed to have known exactly what he was doing.

Gerrard and Skrtel on the other hand, showed clear deliberate intention - not merely according to the FA's ludicrous balance of probabilities criteria, but by their respective leg movements, the looks on their faces. Both Liverpool players were inarguably caught bang to rights deliberately stamping on an opponent's leg, with the clear intention to cause pain and possible damage..

I believe there is an an agenda at play here, not an anto-Chelsea conspiracy per-se, but a pro-Liverpool agenda that manifests it's nasty little self in various ways. one of which is the constant attempt to portray Diego Costa in a worse light than Luis Suarez. These are Liverpool fans after all,and there does appear to be a widely held delusion among Liverpool fans that "if it had been Luis they'd have thrown the book at him."

Never mind that Suarez was a consistently nasty piece of work, who not only bit at least three of his opponents, but would also regularly gouge and scratch and stamp and rake his studs down an opponents leg. He was, and still is a master conman who "wins" free kicks and penalties by what is nothing more than cheating. To believe that Suarez was driven out of the country by "the London media" fits in perfectly with the always the victim mentality that is all too common among Liverpool supporters of all ages and from all backgrounds.

None of which will let the chicken-sh*t FA off the hook if they fail to take action against Skrtel.

He's a proper team player - did Liverpool the biggest favour he possibly could in ensuring that he wouldn't be available for the next three games.

The choice of media language is fascinating, Costa 'criminal' etc., but I read somewhere about Gerrard's 'fairy tale'. I am very old and I have never seen such a thing before, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Many years ago 'fairy' was a derogatory term and the change of meaning is another issue, but to have 'Gerrard's fairy tale' in the press, to me at least, is astonishing and shows the stark contrast with the way the players are viewed.

Some clever IT type please make an old man happy and do a fairy Stevie for me a la the Gone in 60 Seconds mock up.

You're right, I completely miss-worded it and I'm struggling to convey what I meant even now. If the FA took Costa's stamp to be 'vicious, on purpose' etc then Skrtel must be given the same punishment for the 'same' crime. They clearly not the same due to the points you outlined but if the FA see ANY stamp as a stamp then the same punishment must be given to Skrtel, even if his was worse.

Don't fairy tales usually have a happy ending? Gerrard's last season looks like it's going to end on a whimper rather than everyone living happily ever after.

It's worth bearing in mind that all the landfill press are really doing is playing to people's pre-conceptions of players, knowing that people are more likely to read articles and buy papers which state things they already agree with. Obviously it's all complete bollocks and not really worth thinking about, let alone reading, but still it isn't nice to have such nonsense plastered over every news stand. A tragedy in terms of journalistic insight and integrity, but nonetheless I imagine the best way of dealing with it is to completely disregard their opinions and stop buying their papers.

It's easy to label a player whom everyone already deems to be a cheat/thug (etc.) a 'criminal', whereas it's easier to play into Gerrard's reputation as a 'Roy of the Rovers' style player, the passionate England captain who was simply a victim of his own over-commitment. Of course we all know that the latter applies more to Costa and Gerrard is simply an ill-disciplined idiot whose total lack of team ethos and self-control is what has always prevented him from being a top-level, trophy-winning player, despite him having the natural talent to do it.

Of course the great irony of this particular headline comparison is that Gerrard is literally a criminal...

Only desktop, they have comments off on mobile view

It's a conspiracy in favour of the scousers. They know most people use mobiles, so they know what they're doing.

Of course, it all makes sense now.

If the FA take no action it's a disgrace

I think they've backed themselves into a corner which makes it impossible for them not to.
