September 3, 201411 yr England's first game is against Switzerland, in Switzerland on Monday, with their first friendly tonight. An "okay" England team on paper, with a couple of question marks. Glen Johnson isn't good enough and John Stones is starting tonight at right-back, however he could lack first-team football this year so there could be a problem there. There's also the issue of Gerrard and Lampard retiring leaving big shoes to fill. Henderson and Wilshere seem the favoured men to do so, however they have a lot to prove.
September 3, 201411 yr Author England playing decent football with a few half chances being created. Henderson and Wilshere have linked nicely with Rooney and Sterling at times but no clear cut chance created yet. Germany are losing 2-0 to Argentina. Edited September 3, 201411 yr by RichardCFC
September 3, 201411 yr Author 5 out of Argentina's 11 play in Manchester. That's pretty amazing. Edited September 3, 201411 yr by RichardCFC

I actually think England will be a lot better off without Gerrard & Lamps. Let's face it, it never really worked with them and neither ever hit the sort of heights that they did for their club. We now just need Roy to have the balls to drop Rooney too and then we might have a chance of progressing as the side looks pretty good other than that.
September 3, 201411 yr Rooney shouldn't play for England, so boring and slow he is doing literally nothing.
September 3, 201411 yr Rooney shouldn't play for England, so boring and slow he is doing literally nothing. Unfortunately, can't see him being dropped. And I think he knows that and believes he is untouchable. Hope Cahill isn't too badly injured
September 3, 201411 yr Looked way better with Welbeck playing. Everytime he got into dangerous area's he looked as clueless as ever though and lost the ball. Milner coming on was once again a waste of time, didn't have a clue what to do when on the ball. How he gets picked ahead of Nathan Dyer confuses me.
September 3, 201411 yr Author Rooney is one of our best players for me. He scored 7 goals in World Cup 2014 qualifying averaging a goal every 67 minutes. He's a good player for England.
September 3, 201411 yr I can hardly wait for Monday. Just listened to Roy and I'm not sure he saw the game we saw on TV. What is most concerning is the seeming lack of threat in front of the opposition goal. Watching England is a trial at the moment.
September 3, 201411 yr Author I do rate Rooney but England are still woeful right now. The worst thing is - I'm a patient person but I'm incredibly bored of hearing "promise" and "potential" in every other sentence from Roy.
September 3, 201411 yr The commentary almost went without hitch then at about the 90 minute mark the commentator decided to see how far he could get his tongue up Stevie Me's arsehole! What is it with the media in this country & that scouse c**t!
September 3, 201411 yr Author ITV's coverage is dire anyway. It's pretty much a cliche now to moan about Adrian Chiles or ITV but they're just so so bad.
September 3, 201411 yr ITV's coverage is dire anyway. It's pretty much a cliche now to moan about Adrian Chiles or ITV but they're just so so bad. You would think that with all the negative stuff said about ITV Football over the years they would change it up a bit. I don't think i have ever seen a single person praise ITV Football.
September 4, 201411 yr Glad this was a friendly. We certainly did not look like World Champions after that performance. Loew has his work cut out for him. Granted, we made I believe 7 changes to the team that started the WC final but still... Brutal. Edited September 4, 201411 yr by Arq
September 4, 201411 yr A bit off topic but there has been debate for some years now about England playing home games away from Wembley. Read yesterday that the FA announced that England's home games will be played at Wembley for the next eight to nine years so that the new Stadium can be paid for. If the re-building of Wembley had been better managed it would have built on time and to budget and enormous debts would have been avoided. When Wembley was being re-developed the England team played games around the country and thus allowing fans who normally couldn't afford or have the time to go to Wembley to watch their national side. In other countries the national team plays in different stadiums.
September 4, 201411 yr It's another example of the FA getting it completely wrong. I think New Wembley is a bit of an embarrassment. As you say, it worked so well when they used to play England matches at club grounds and that's what should have happened last night and to be honest, for all of the European qualifiers. But oh no, the FA mustn't lose out on revenue, however small the crowds are. They are going to have huge issues in a couple of years when the Club Wembley Debentures expire. The company I work for signed up for the 10 years and you cannot get out of it early but for games like last night, no-one is interested you can't give the tickets away. So many firms will not renew - Wembley are going to have to have a massive re-think.
September 5, 201411 yr A very well-written piece by Barney Ronay about Rooney being sh*te for England, basically: http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/sep/05/wayne-rooney-england-captain
