John Stones

Featured Replies

We sign him because we need a replacement, he signs for us because he gets the chance to work & learn off the best!

If he goes to United, the same that has happened to Jones & Smalling will happen to him, thrown in at the deep end and found wanting!

If Rio had gone to United at the same stage in his career, & United had been in the same situation as they are now, he'd have been walked all over!

If & its a big if, Stones wants to further his career at the moment, the best possible move he could make would be to Chelsea, where he will be eased into a team & guided by the best manager in world football & argueably the best centre back of his generation.

Also remember the most important point of all.

LVG has stated he won't be hanging around at manyoo for too long, http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/louis-van-gaal-plans-leave-6145104

Whilst Mourinho has only talked about staying long term at Chelsea, and indeed has just signed a new contract.

So Stones could go to a club where the manager (arguably the best) personally wants the player and his going to be in the job long term, hence securing Stones a position long term in the club.

Or go to a club where the manager has not personally picked you, and could be gone within 2 years.

Stones will go to the highest bidder.

He'd jump at the chance to play for Chelsea and United.

Sadly if United are in for him then they will get him.

How do you know this? During all this time, he has never spoken out about wanting out or anything. He's acting like a professional, i like it.

Because 9/10 young players at mid table clubs would jump at the chance to actually win trophies and play alongside the best players in Europe....

I don't think anything Ferdinand said was particularly unreasonable.

This is the foundation of his argument, and he's not wrong. Stones would have to dislodge Terry and Cahill from the first XI, as well as Kurt Zouma, who is a similar age and in a similar position. Man Utd are in a situation where they are genuinely having to shoehorn Blind into the starting XI due to a lack of quality alternatives at centre back.

Ferdinand is right, Stones will want as much playing time as possible, and in his situation and at his level of quality it's not an unreasonable ask. We can't guarantee him that for at least two seasons - Man Utd can.

I think our best option in terms of signing Stones would be to offer to loan him back to Everton until the end of the season so Stones continues to start and Everton have time to find a viable replacement - bearing in mind they've already lost Distin and Alcaraz, as well as the fact that Jagielka will be 33 in two weeks.

Ferdinand's comments are pretty short sighted.

Okay this year maybe Stones doesn't play too much but next year he could easily be first choice and would be for the next ten years plus.

He'd be getting a defensive tutoring from Terry and Mourinho at Chelsea. At United he'd be there with Jones and Smalling. Yeah he's better than those two and would probably instantly be ahead of them should he go to United but he'd be pushing himself more by joining us.

Probably just my Chelsea bias speaking but he'd have better prospects for his long term development by joining us.

I remember when United signed Jones, he was labeled the "new John Terry" well he's not even the new Boumsong.

Won't be going to Utd then.. :laugh2:

True, but if he was so eager to make that move this summer, he would've done more than what he is doing now to make a transfer possible. It seems to me that he's staying at Everton, unless Man U cave in and pay Everton's price.

Why would he force through a move?

If he does that and it doesn't happen then where does that leave him with the club and fans?

Costa wanted to move to Chelsea but he didn't kick up a fuss or publicly ask to leave, we made the bid and he jumped at the chance.

Just because Stones hasn't handed in a transfer request doesn't mean he wouldn't jump at the chance to play for a big club who actually challenge to win things.

If Chelsea or United offer enough to Everton then Stones would move...of that I'm pretty certain.

£32m won't be enough for whoever wants him. If Utd start getting involved, we enjoy fleecing them, so that would push it further up

Also we're not going to take any deal that involves loaning him back to us. Think about it. A club would have to be breathtakingly stupid to do that, when there's every chance his value will have increased by next summer.

I appreciate that it might make sense from your point of view, but you have to consider the other side of the equation.

I don't think it makes sense for us either. If we buy him there ain't going to be much goodwill towards him or us from your lot and the best thing to do is to leave. We have had situations before (like De Bruyne or Courtois) where we've bought them and they've stayed on, but no-one's begrudging them at their Belgian club, because they're much smaller clubs in a smaller league. Anyone that wants to buy Stones and leave him at Everton for a year is mad. Also, there's the Diego Costa factor to think about. Atletico knew he was on his way and they gambled on his hamstring because they had nothing to lose. If you pay £35m+ on a player you don't want to take that risk with the player. Everton will look after him far more if he's their asset, because they stand to lose a lot. Once he's been sold, different story. If we get him (which may well not happen) we bring him in straightaway because first, we'll want to play him, we have a shortage of defenders, second, because with Mourinho, Terry and world class players all around him, there's absolutely no point in stalling his progression into the big time, if he's the special talent you say he is, which Mourinho clearly agrees with, otherwise we wouldn't be bidding such big money.

Do you have any inside info mate ?

Tea Bar Boy has said confidently that Chelsea have been eyeing Stones for about 18 months now.

No idea how he knew but it's one of the few times I believe someone not to be talking out their arse regarding transfers.

Well if Stones hands in a transfer request we'll have to proclaim him the King of the Shed.

Might've got this wrong, but didn't you guys enquire about him when we originally got him from Barnsley? I don't think it was any secret amongst scouts that his potential was huge

I have no problem with clubs fans bigging up their players. But, for some Evertonians to claim Barca will buy Stones for £50m next summer, is mental. What acid are they on

Matt Law again in Telegraph reporting a 30m bid to be made and Everton may let go if the deal is "worth" 34. Obviously meaning add ons.

Interesting earlier, Kevin Ratcliffe the ex Everton captain reckons 30m and theyll be mad to turn it down, cant afford to

Great player Ratcliffe, but he's widely regarded as a gobsh*te by our fanbase.

Also no quotes or substance to Matt Law's article. If you've ever seen him on Sunday Supplement, he's a talentless hack who wouldn't know how to source an article properly.

Was pretty bang on re. Fabregas and Falcao though

There was also no quotes to that story about a "top" official contacting SSN, but a lot of your fans believed it.  When it read more like a made up story

Say we submit a third bid and Everton reject it. Should Stones then submit a transfer request would we need to submit a 4th bid of increased value?

Don't think I've ever known a transfer to involve four bids before.

Not convinced by some of the comments saying it will take Stones at least two seasons to break into the first team here.... he's ready now... if it means dropping Brano, Cahill or JT then so be it (I think the more likely scenario is that he'd be rotated with Brano/JT)

Stones is the future and we're mugs if we fail to sign him.

If we whack a 3rd bid in, I'd imagine it would be somewhere close to the 30 odd mill being rumoured as the acceptable fee in every paper. Should it be rejected, I'd actually be surprised if we bid again for a 4th time.

Seeing as we are looking to spend a lot of money on him, i think this means that Mourinho will be looking to rest Terry from time to time. To prolong Terry's career i don't think he will be able to play week after week like last season. We should look to keep Terry for as long as possible, Stones coming in could actually extend Terry's career. Stones can play RB too so i can see him being rotated with Ivanovic every so often as well.

I think we should do all we can to get him this season, we can't risk United or City getting involved next season.
