John Stones

Rumours about City and Utd chasing Godin.

29 years old, £30m being quoted.

No way would Atletico turn down that, given his age.

Utd I understand, they need experience at the back, even though they have a plethora of centre-backs.

With McNair, Blackett, Rojo, Smalling and Jones (as well as the older Evans), it would be strange to see them going after a young centre-back, although there's precious little quality in that list if they want to challenge for the title.

Godin makes perfect sense for them, although of course it's a risk.

City? They have Kompany (29) and Mangala (24), as well as Demichelis (34).

They appear to need a defender, although the money they've spent on Mangala you'd expect their intention is to partner him with Kompany, their captain.

£30m on another centre-back, furthermore one that is 29? That can only suggest they have no faith in Mangala, which would surprise me.

Stones would make more sense for them than Utd because they already have experienced centre-backs.

If they are after Godin, I can only think it's for a younger, better version of Demichelis.

If the path is clear for us for Stones I'm happy, but if he stays at Everton this term and has a great season it won't be clear for us again, so we should take this opportunity and bid big, come in with the big bid and get this deal done, no more faffing about.

The word is he wants the move, the signs are that Everton have reconciled themselves to the likelihood of it happening, they know we're not going away, so now we should show them the colour of our money, because that's what they'll want to see.

Who cares if we pay over the odds? I don't. He's young and English and he was always going to cost a premium and Everton are reluctant sellers. We've made him our only big target this summer, we've done very well in the transfer market since Jose returned, and we're minted, so I think we should just bite the bullet on this one and make sure we clinch the deal.

When I say the signs are that Everton have reconciled themselves, that of course is an optimistic reading, it could be the exact opposite.

Bid big Chelsea, and test them.

Maybe the reason we're delaying the bid, as others have said, is because we've come to an agreement with Everton and we're letting them bring in a centre-back before they sell.

If that's the case, it will be interesting to see if Stones plays for them this weekend, although I believe he might be carrying a knock.

Sit back and watch the papers feast when he doesnt play this weekend.

Honestly not that fussed about whether we get Stones or not, sure I think we can improve on Cahill and a Zouma-Stones partnership sounds pretty good. But I really dont think CB is were our ossues lie. I really think those 30+ mill could have been spent better on other positions

Stones may well be a great player in the making, but there's another bonus to his signing, and that would be the lift he would give everyone. Right now, with Begovic and Falcao coming in, it's not much to get excited about, and a new signing, an exciting signing, always creates a buzz, amongst players and fans alike, and maybe that's missing a wee bit at the moment, compared to our rivals.

Last summer, the players we brought in, there was a real buzz, because of their quality, and when you're buoyed it can help you get wins.

I think Jose must be thinking about this too.

Martinez has accused JT of making illegal comments about Stones when he said that the club w were looking towards the future with players like Stones.

Martinez, the e whiney little bitch when it comes to Chelsea, apparently dodged several questions about whether Stones had expressed a desire to join Chelsea.

The narrative is turning, expect something to happen within the week.

Player affected (head turned), refusing to answer whether Stones told him he wants to join us, gone from not for sale, to not for sale "but i wont be silly enough to say i know what will happen"  you could be right, screw is being tightened

Is it me or the Evertonians not posting much now? Quite amusing though that the stuff about Stones being keen etc was bullsh*t because it had "no quotes, nothing from player himself"  To suddenly today, their own manager has more or less confirmed it.  Refusing to answer whether Stones has told him he wants to join us? Says it all

Happy to comment on anything, not ducking anything. Just trying to read the situation from afar, and see what I think is happening and what might happen, but it's a difficult one to predict in all honesty, so it's been difficult to have any concrete opinions to offer.

Re: Martinez's 'I'm not stupid enough to say I know what will happen' comment, I was happy with that. There's no point promising things that you don't have total control over, and then risking looking a fool afterwards. He can't promise. He'd like to keep the player, but clearly if the bid reaches a certain point (whatever that point is, who knows?), then we will accept it.

Re: the comment about Terry, the articles do also say that we're not making any sort of complaint to the FA, we're speaking to Chelsea about it because both clubs are keen to maintain a positive relationship, and Martinez acknowledges that we've done business in the past to the satisfaction of both clubs.

So don't take his comments too personally. He's just defending our interests as we want him to, just as your manager defends your interests as you want him to, and often oversteps the mark in the opinion of other club's fans.

I think Stones will be fit this weekend, so I don't think that'll be an issue.

Do I think he'll go? I honestly don't know.

good post. Do you not think the public confirmation of him being affected/head turned is a bad sign for you?

Saw an interesting stat today that since Jan we have only scored more than one goal in 4 games. I agree with you and bar a substitue LB which considering Jose's lack of rotation is still debatable (would rather give the spot to Ake), I don't think we need another CB as things stand especially a £30m one. Unless Jose intends to start him which I am struggling to see how considering Zouma has been shuttled further up the park, it is not a sensible buy presently (Ivanovic can always fill in)

I'd rather take that £30m and buy Pedro at £22m or add on the £15m+ for a LB & try getting Reus. We need another outlet on the right, we are very laboured when Hazard is off his game.

I agree with you about the extra buzz it creates around the place but I reckon that signing needs to be in the band of 3 further up the pitch. Unless Jose intends to bench Cahill, signing Stones and putting him on the bench will hardly lift the team.

That's a good point for sure.

Was reading posts from the Everton forum "Grand Old Team" and 90% of the fans in that topic seemed decent and had the mental ability to convey their opinions on the situation without resorting in calling Chelsea scum etc... I still do like the fact they're certain, like they're privy to such information, that we "leaked" the bid, what possible reason would we have for doing so? That's paranoia... in an otherwise good topic.

Martinez suggested again yesterday that it was Chelsea who made the initial leak about the bid

"The whole John Stones situation has come through the media because a club made a bid and made it public."

That's probably why a lot of Everton fans think it was us.

Seen a few journos suggest that it was in fact Stones' agent who leaked the bid to the media.

Was always going to be unlikely that a transfer like this would have been kept secret.

I would have thought it would make sense for Everton to agree to sell before the season kicks off. If Stones plays and breaks his leg, they will be left with one very unhappy player. Leaving him out of the squad without agreeing a fee will also raise questions.

Martinez is a f**king tool, I doubt he will even be Everton manager in 12 months.

He's was useless last season and I can't see him getting any better this season.

He's clearly rattled but the last thing he should be doing is making comments about Chelsea and Jose in terms of the bid being made public.

Mourinho will chew him up and spit him back out, he doesn't have what it takes to go toe to toe with Jose in the media....he will learn the hard way.

As for Everton, mid table scrap for Europa will be as good as it gets, John knows this and I can imagine he's eager to join us and learn off the best centre back in EPL history.
