Chelsea to give up on John Stones as Jose Mourinho turns attention to £15m-rated Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour

Chelsea are set to give up their attempt to sign John Stones and instead take Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour in a deal worth £15million.

The Premier League champions have decided to look elsewhere for a top-class central defender after Everton turned down their latest bid worth £38m.

The decision will come not only as a blow to Stones but also to Liverpool who have been linked with the 26-year-old Tunisian international but will now find their efforts gazumped.

Chelsea have opened negotiations with Monaco for Abdennour, whose varied career has seen him play for Werder Bremen and Toulouse, and are confident they can make the deal happen before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

It does smack of "think of a defender leaving his club and link them to Chelsea" rumour.

Couple things could be going on. Firstly, we might be trying to force John Stones' hand into pushing harder for a move.

Secondly, we really do need a back up in case the Stones' deal doesn't happen.

Also we don't want to splash out say 35m on Laporte because we're going to come back for Stones next Summer.

So Abdennour at 15m might be seen as a decent back-up solution.

As for whether he's any good, I've never seen him play so have absolutely no idea.

Everyone seems to rate this guy, from players to managers and media.

I think didier on this forum is a high advocate of this signing too as he has seen plenty of him. I've seen him a few times and barely noticed him but that's a great trait to have as a defender.

No we don't. We have Terry, Cahill, Zouma and Ivanovic, all of whom can play CB. What we absolutely don't need, is another panic signing, spunking 20-odd million on someone, giving them a 5 year contract, and then being unable to get rid of them in a year's time.

Stones is clearly the one the club want, so why not wait and see if we can get him in Jan or next summer? We have 4 players who can play CB as it is, we aren't desperate for another right this second.

Ivanovic can play centre-back in the same way he plays right-back. He can fill the space on the team sheet but in reality it's probably best that we don't play him there at all. I don't even think he'll cause less trouble in the middle. He's still too slow and he's useless when one on one. I'd rather we spent 15m on a player who can actually do a job when required. That shouldn't mean we can't go for Stones next year. Neither Terry or Cahill look like world beaters at the moment and I'm not sure Zouma is the answer.
