August 29, 201510 yr Chelsea to give up on John Stones as Jose Mourinho turns attention to £15m-rated Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour Chelsea are set to give up their attempt to sign John Stones and instead take Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour in a deal worth £15million. The Premier League champions have decided to look elsewhere for a top-class central defender after Everton turned down their latest bid worth £38m. The decision will come not only as a blow to Stones but also to Liverpool who have been linked with the 26-year-old Tunisian international but will now find their efforts gazumped. Chelsea have opened negotiations with Monaco for Abdennour, whose varied career has seen him play for Werder Bremen and Toulouse, and are confident they can make the deal happen before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3214552/Chelsea-John-Stones-Jose-Mourinho-turns-attention-15m-Monaco-defender-Aymen-Abdennour.html
August 29, 201510 yr Was incredible last year. Not sure if hes a flash in the pan or anything but if its at a decent price it would be a shrewd purchase

August 29, 201510 yr It does smack of "think of a defender leaving his club and link them to Chelsea" rumour.
August 29, 201510 yr Author It does smack of "think of a defender leaving his club and link them to Chelsea" rumour. Couple things could be going on. Firstly, we might be trying to force John Stones' hand into pushing harder for a move. Secondly, we really do need a back up in case the Stones' deal doesn't happen. Also we don't want to splash out say 35m on Laporte because we're going to come back for Stones next Summer. So Abdennour at 15m might be seen as a decent back-up solution. As for whether he's any good, I've never seen him play so have absolutely no idea.
August 29, 201510 yr Everyone seems to rate this guy, from players to managers and media. I think didier on this forum is a high advocate of this signing too as he has seen plenty of him. I've seen him a few times and barely noticed him but that's a great trait to have as a defender.
August 29, 201510 yr He's very good defender, good in air and strong defensively. He would be good addition.
August 29, 201510 yr Secondly, we really do need a back up in case the Stones' deal doesn't happen. No we don't. We have Terry, Cahill, Zouma and Ivanovic, all of whom can play CB. What we absolutely don't need, is another panic signing, spunking 20-odd million on someone, giving them a 5 year contract, and then being unable to get rid of them in a year's time.
August 29, 201510 yr Stones is clearly the one the club want, so why not wait and see if we can get him in Jan or next summer? We have 4 players who can play CB as it is, we aren't desperate for another right this second.
August 29, 201510 yr Why not buy him now and buy Stones later? Terry is 45, Bran is on his last legs atm, Cahill isnt getting any younger. Zouma, Abdennour, Cahill, player X looks pretty good to me next season

August 29, 201510 yr Daily Mail saying that Monaco have upped the price from £15m to £22m and would prefer to sell him to Valencia. The player has reportedly signed papers to say he wants to join Chelsea. Edited August 29, 201510 yr by AndyBlue82
August 29, 201510 yr I've only seen him against Arsenal in the Champions League but I remember being very impressed by him.
August 29, 201510 yr f**king rumours, man. No, just the effect of what happens to a players price tag once Chelsea get involved!
August 29, 201510 yr well he looks big enough and ugly enough to give ivanovic a smack for leaving his defenders to do all his dirty work, so that's a positive thing.
August 29, 201510 yr Author No we don't. We have Terry, Cahill, Zouma and Ivanovic, all of whom can play CB. Ivanovic can play centre-back in the same way he plays right-back. He can fill the space on the team sheet but in reality it's probably best that we don't play him there at all. I don't even think he'll cause less trouble in the middle. He's still too slow and he's useless when one on one. I'd rather we spent 15m on a player who can actually do a job when required. That shouldn't mean we can't go for Stones next year. Neither Terry or Cahill look like world beaters at the moment and I'm not sure Zouma is the answer.
