Papy Djilobodji

now you have your wish granted - Michael Hector is now on the pitch vs Bremen ;)

It wasn't exactly my dying wish :-) Not totally convinced he is presently at the level our defence yearns for.

Hector is the Jamaican version of David Luiz - that is all you need to know

Says he's gonna prove us wrong! Bet he's going to knock us out of the league cup or something.

Maybe you weren't good enough and the coaches worked that out quickly in training, but most importantly which idiot thought it would be a good idea to sign him to begin with?

I can understand why he might feel that way.

He got one minute of football and four appearances on the bench, and immediately after joining the club, his manager admitted he'd never heard of him and played next to no part in signing him. He was then loaned out at the first opportunity.

Evidently he wasn't deemed to be good enough but it doesn't seem like we made him feel like a particularly valued part of the family.

To be honest I'm not sure what he expected.

He was coming to the champions of England at the time where he was bought solely as back up. He in turn evidently didn't show much in training because 3 Chelsea managers didn't play him in their starting 11's during his time here.

He has got a move to a club where he will play football in the most competitive league in Europe and on more money than he got elsewhere.

Win win for him I'd have thought.

And yet he has excelled in two top 5 league clubs and was deemed the best centerback in the Bundesliga in the second half of the season as per Kicker.

I don't care what you guys think, but he is more than suitable for Chelsea if given a chance. He's better than Koulibaly, but we're throwing 50 mln at him...

He's rubbish  - move on

He's clearly not better than Koulibaly, if he were he wouldn't have moved to Sunderland...there would have been a host of clubs after him which there wasn't...not even those German clubs wanted him.

He is an average defender.

I really don't like the logic of 'he plays for a sh*t club therefore he's sh*t'. One of the centre-halves from our Champions League-winning side was signed from Bolton after all...

That's not the only logic though.

It's combined with the fact there was little interest in him from other sides, 3 Chelsea managers and coaching staff decided he wasn't good enough to get into our team at a time where we were struggling at the back. Then of course there are the brief times we seen him pre season where he looked like a fish out of water at the back.

It's all of the above that make statement like "He's a better defender than Koulibaly" look rather silly.

I'm not disputing any of that (although I'm not especially fond of the idea of adopting someone else's opinion in lieu of forming my own, whatever expertise they may have); I've heard the line I mentioned above taken when blithely dismissing a number of players (Idrissa Gueye is the one who immediately jumps to mind) and I don't think it really has any validity.

But Cahill's career trajectory was an upward curve with him ending up at Chelsea, becoming a regular starter and winning everything going.

Papy's played the majority of his career in the lower leagues of France, flirted with relegation when he was in Ligue 1 and then moved on loan to Germany to play half a season in the worst defence in the Bundesliga.

From there he's once again moved to a side that's aim is going to be avoiding relegation. At the age of 28 I feel fairly comfortable in saying he's found his level rather than him being a misunderstood genius.

Based on the little I've seen I think you're probably right in that he's a fairly average defender. My point was that I am skeptical of arguments that purely use a player's club to dismiss their level of ability; it's lazy and myopic.

Yes, they did. Werder Bremen wanted him, so did Marseille. He had enquiries for at least two more Bundesliga clubs. Sunderland probably gave the most money, hence he went to Sunderland.

I'm pretty sure you'll be regetting your decision by the end of the season. Funnily enough you want Kone from Sunderland, who was never as highly rated as Djilobodji was in France.

I'm confused, are you a Chelsea supporter?

I'm confused, are you a Chelsea supporter?

Does he have to toe the line to be a chelsea supporter? Can't a man judge a situation on criteria he considers important without playing to the gallery or emotions? Please let our passion as fans not also be our weakness all the time. For the most part of it fans are fickle minded. Love and support a player, staff member or the board when they show positive or acceptable performance, give them unfathomable amount of warm love to foster a relationship where said player or as the case maybe begins being held to high standards of loyalty and commitment to the club. Once said player has bad performances or even great ones that earn them potential bigger moves they become subject of all sort of vilification and threats spouted without said fans holding themselves to high standards of loyalty and commitment to the player. Sad and sickening.
