We've got a new Kepa

said on another thread. Henderson... Really like him as a keeper. a lot of very good attributes. Doesn't want to play second choice either, would be an upgrade on Kepa. Sadly, as much as I wanted Kepa to work it simply hasnt really. A very good keeper for the continental game. Think the EPL is just a little too quick/powerful for him.

Is he actually an upgrade on Kepa though? Surely a genuine upgrade isn't going for £20m with Forest and Luton the only teams interested...

Maignan - £70m+ not gonna happen when we still need a CM

Costa - £80m+ not gonna happen when we still need a CM

Kobel - Going to be Neuer's heir at Bayern

Anyone else?

Get what you pay for. Why does everyone think that the last bloke on the line is the least important player on the pitch.

No i t is not. this was to nullify the false narratives about Onana. This is a goalie we should have gone for.  We spent 70M on Kepa and we are  all here concerned about it . Kepa is the worst Goalie i have seen at Chelsea since Stamford Bridge got renovated . There are many and better alternatives.

Onana is Tiabbi-level bad based on those horrid gaffes  in that video.

Not a single person is saying that, we're just being realistic with what we can spend this summer. Still got to get the Caicedo deal over the line that will cost £80m+ or we're starting the season with a player that has never kicked a ball in the Prem next to Enzo all season.

I don't think a single person is saying Kepa should stay and be our number one for the next decade, just that there is more important positions to strengthen this summer and likely to be better keeper options in January/next summer.

We've nearly done a full rebuild that took Arsenal 3 years in one season. I'd rather wait until next summer and get a genuinely world class keeper, than shoe horn in some £30m signing and hope it works.

Mendy was shocking with the ball at his feet?

He had very awkward control and took some crazy risks which sometimes backfired but in terms of line breaking passes I feel he's been the best of the bad bunch, infact Tuchel specifically name dropped him after a game for such and here's a few examples.

Was that video link satire? These are the exact passes that Kepa makes every game.

I am not sure that's what was being said either and we kind of diverted off the path. I think that you mentioned to somebody else to name alternatives to Kepa, which i did, mainly on the basis that the three individuals named have all had receent rumours circulating about them being available for transfer.

With regards to fees and our appetite you may well be right, but if we are looking for an elite level keeper then you get what you pay for just as much as any other player. Considering the numbers we are looking at for a DM, Maignan for his ability and experience probably looks good value.

If it is felt that Kepa and Sanchez are sufficient for now, so be it, but it takes nothing away from our ability to fill this position with a significanly upgraded alternative if we wished to do so. The numbers being quoted for the possible sale of Gallagher and Chalobah and the money spent of Ugochukwu, would easily have covered the cost of an elite keeper, so i don't feel it is a financial issue.

I have nothing against the strategy being adopted now, not at all. I will probably if Kepa balloons another penalty into the upper deck in another cup final, of course.  My thoughts have been that with such a new, young and inexperienced defence, that a commanding, experienced elite level keeper would be well worth the money spent.

That said i also still have a sneaky feeling that Sanchez may well come good for us if we have get this defensive structure set up for him.

People keeping saying kepa is great with his feet that’s the only part of his game that is okay the rest is poor so that makes him a great goalkeeper then 🙈

Kepa isn't great with his feet but he's good enough as a modern keeper. A LOT better than Mendy was, but the Mendy revisionism seems to have changed that about him recently. Think i posted a breakdown about Kepa's ball playing ability a few pages back on here you can go and view if you'd like.

Every man and his dog knows Kepa will be replaced at some point. Its unlikely that we're going to spend £80m on a genuine upgrade this summer though. Best we can hope for is a deputy to challenge him, can we stop moaning now?

I did acknowledge he has a poor initial touch (while Kepa does have a good first touch and close control, which has probably played a part in making people believe he's a fantastic ball playing keeper when he simply isn't) but if there was anyway of accessing these type of stats i bet anything he'll win in terms of line breakers that start strong attacks, case in point the goal in Porto. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong but that's the impression I get watching the games of the last few years.

Not saying he's fantastic btw, like I said best of the bad bunch as despite how great they were overall Cech and Courtois were pretty smack in that aspect of the game aswell.

how can you watch this and think he is not a good goalkeeper

i believe the best is yet to come. he can be our long term goalkeeper

That’s the good bits now put up the cock ups on video not that I’ve got 4hours to watch them he’s a poor goalkeeper and everybody knows it

last season he didn't even have that many mistakes

i can't even think of one obvious mistake

Jesus, that highlights (or more to the point, lowlights) clip @RIP Mourinhoput up of Mendy is outrageous.

He really did give me nightmares, any time the ball rolled back towards his feet. He did make some great saves and he had that absolute purple patch which looking back, must have just been a blip, as no serious football team would want a keeper who does those sort of things so regularly. And he wanted an improved contract FFS.............!!

Given no club wanted Kepa for £18m when that was his release clause months before we signed him and no team has been willing to pay £20m for him at any point since I'm not sure that's much of a point.

The bar to upgrade on Kepa isn't exactly high. Better keepers frequently move for less than £20m.
