I'll reserve judgement for 2 weeks time. Yeah, the bits below from marescas press conference and the articles online really don't fill me with hope! Ffs, really feel sorry for him. That surgery was supposed to be a "permanent" fix. The fact he got the same issues again will/would have fkd him up mentally too. Having soo much hope then BAM! Back to square one! I know from experience that's fkn hard to deal with. For me it's been 4 yrs. So I don't normally look at "new options, new surgery, new opinions, etc..." with that sense of hope anymore because its a fkn hard fall sometimes. He's a kid, relatively speaking, still with a fk load to look forward to/ahead of him still. If these injuries affect him with even the slightest "permanent" physical or mental scars/issues then retirement may even be on the books. I know, I know...but unless we are there and know 100% what his issues are then it's an option that we should try and be ready to accept from him. "Upon his return against Liverpool in October, it had been 562 days since James last managed to play a full 90 minutes in the Premier League, with the subsequent match a week later at home to Newcastle his first full match completed in well over a year. His most league starts in a single season is 25 matches while last season he played just 482 minutes in total because of injury and two red cards. Since breaking into Chelsea's senior squad in the 2019-20 season, James's best run of matches is six achieved in May 2021. Last December he underwent surgery in Finland, which had been designed to help him overcome the issues permanently. But he has suffered his second setback since the season started, after initially injuring himself in Chelsea's penultimate pre-season match against Real Madrid in the United States." https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c1wjyq2g5zxo Edited November 22, 20241 yr by Simplymo Grammar, formatting, etc

Well the club screwed up with this one & I can’t blame him. When you have 5-6 CBs, & 2 RBs ahead of you, he will be mad to sign a 7yr contract. They should have sold both Badiashile & Disasi in the summer when Madrid & Newcastle were sniffing around Josh to show there is a path for him. Disasi & Badiashile need moving on next summer. That should be the priority for outgoings. I'd honestly even sell Tosin just to coup some profit. We need a CB that can come straight in and command the defense. Jonathan Tah is available on a free next summer. We can then look to get that Araujo lad from Benfica. Gusto/Gilchrist/James Tah/Fofana Colwill/Araujo Cucurella/Veiga
November 22, 20241 yr Yup. Figured. He doesn’t post something like that if the injury was “minor”. https://x.com/cfcpys/status/1859981753253023973?s=46&t=IADWMMDWtMYMPFeimX1NoQ
November 22, 20241 yr Where's all this stuff about him moving to a " warmer climate" as a hamstring injury preventative measure coming from ? Remember when the ShedEnd medical experts were saying that it was his " body shape" that was the cause of his hamstring injuries? Either way, gutted for the bloke, one of the very best when he was injury free.
November 22, 20241 yr Was bound to happen class player but think he’ll have his career cut very short at this rate
November 22, 20241 yr Chelsea have spent the most amount of money on injured players than any Premier League team. The Blues top Manchester united and Liverpool over the last three seasons. Arsenal and Manchester City fall significantly lower, helping their title chances by having a fit squad.

November 23, 20241 yr Not much left to say. Really feel for Reece. The pattern is so repeatable and so far from how his career should be unfolding. Pragmatically this isn’t sustainable. Shame we can’t get the young right back in the squad as back up to Gusto. Still not giving up on Reece, but something has to change.

Cant speak for shed end experts, but the surgeon who has operated on Reece (Dr. Cugat, who performed surgery on James in 2023) noted that James' body shape and the way he moves on the field could make him more vulnerable to certain types of injuries.

Oh, that's what they all say in case the operation is a f**k up.🤣 Anyway, my sources at Chelsea have told me it was a bloke from Finland called Lasse Lempainen who operated on Reece December 2023 ..unless he's had another operation? Mind you, Lasse was wildly over optimistic it seems, he thought James's problems were over, but covered his arse by saying it was now down to the rehab with the club. Perhaps he needed surgery to alter his body shape ? Btw, what a goal from that ugly head bloke yesterday! Have a good Sunday Jimbo!

Or perhaps we could try that Fulham manager's treatment for muscle injuries? This.... "A report in the Observer suggested that ousted boss Magath asked the big centre-half to soak a block of cheese in alcohol and leave it on his injured thigh overnight."

I cannot find anything that suggests that Dr Ramon Cugat (a knee specialist and Barcelona doctor) operated on Reece James. James's surgeon was Dr Lasse Lampainen, and while he did mention parts of James's biology that made the surgery more difficult, there is nothing mentioned about Reece James' biology making him more prone to injury. The single biggest factor is his previous injury record.

November 28, 20241 yr That's fkn horrible if true...poor lad. So far maresca has been choosing his words wisely or just being vague about Reece. I hate assumptions, but I also believe in history repeating itself. If true I really think he needs to move somewhere hot to ease the strain on his hamstrings* or quit and do something else in or out of footy. He should have some money saved up by now, may not live like some other footballers but should be very comfortable if invested wisely. End of the day his mental health is way more important and I can only imagine what this is doing to him (mentally) if he's out again for a very long time. * I have no idea if that helps btw, i'm not a medical professional, I'm just going by what ppl have said on here. Maybe it's a known fact I'm unaware of, no idea.

Its an absolute joke - a very unfunny one. Yes there is the human side, we all get that. It must be painful to the lad.... ...But on what planet are we if we think we can genuinely have any long term planning with Reece in our team. He is just too unreliable and cannot be depended on - and because of this, he needs to go - or more accurate, we need to move on without him. Top flight football is littered with stories of players let down by their bodies in one way or another, and he is another one. Sorry if that sounds harsh (it is!) - but it is brutal at the top. He should be done here. 4 months off followed by 3 games and a few training sessions on is not sustainable.

If by some miracle he can play regularly again obviously we keep him. If he continues like this then we offer him vastly reduced terms to stay. Possibly a pay as you play with a small base wage. Then is up to him.
November 28, 20241 yr I would love to be a fly on the wall in the medical room when they’re deciding who has to report to the board that Reece is gonna be out injured again.
November 28, 20241 yr We're looking for a miracle at this point, but I think the time has come for James to make a serious decision. He needs to make the decision to either retire, or go play in a country where it's less intense. I think any hope of him having a career here now is over.
