VAR Protest - May 22 - PL HQ.

Featured Replies

Think I'd be happy with offsides being eliminated fully from VAR. If the linesman f**ks up, he f**ks up. I've never felt truly robbed on an offside goal as a fan in the past.

On penalty tackles, it does stop players diving, I'd probably keep that in. I'm not fussed by the Werner non penalty, that's just officials being crap. Could happen with or without. It should be less likely to happen with VAR.

Handball calls for penalties or goals, that's the bit that stresses me out. Handball is such a messy area and I think I preferred it when it was just up to the ref on the pitch rather than endless analysis on which part of the arm it touched.

There's no way we keep VAR just to stop diving. So I'd rather we just eliminated it entirely.

Good shout on the offside. Agree fully with that.

The challenges would probably be abused and used for game management, but personally it's the lesser of 2 evils for me. Just so frustrated at inept decisions which leave us all wondering what the hell the ref is playing at. If the ref had to review on the spot and justify his decision, which was recorded for public record, then I think it cuts out the allegations of corruption.

Another thing I would like is a live, real time stop watch. Take the discretion out of all this additional time that refs add on. Ball is out of play for a goal kick, the clock stops, to be started again when the keeper kicks the ball. Sub being made? Ditto. Automate the process, or at least have the refs watch broadcast and publicised. That way, when the clock reaches 90, the game is over. No more nonsense like Allison scoring a header when time is already done. No more arguments.

Good shout on the clock. Easy to implement and everyone knows exactly how long is left. Maybe you could similar to rugby on 90, once the ball is out of play that is that, finished.

You would still have to allow time for Liverpool to take a corner.

I only really care about two issues:

1: An independent, ex-player forms part of a VAR panel (3-man) for red card and penalty decisions. The decision needs to be unanimous. If a single decision can totally ruin a football match, then the onus should not be on one ref who has never played the game to make it.

2. Offside application. Leave it the hands of the linesman and only overrule in two situations: linesman plays it on and VAR shows daylight between the attacker and last man; or linesman rules it offside but VAR does it's thing with the lines and concludes it is onside. This would be more in line with the remit of 'clear and obvious' and also give the advantage to the attacker, which is what we all want.

Var is more good than bad, it does make plenty of good calls but the wrong ones are horrible. Just scrap this offside rule where unless its your foot, you aren't offside and maybe also give a foots length advantage. Being offside by a toenail is ridiculous.

I think this is more the issue. Way it is applied to offside assumes it is utterly perfect. I prefer the cricket approach where there is a window that is umpires call. But I'm sure people would still complain then.

Nowadays a lot of linesmen don't appear to make a call and just leave it to Var to decide. I suppose in not making a call they are both passing the buck while in effect saying the player was onside (and lots of Var offside decisions would be literally impossible to pick up with the naked eye). Which to my mind means they are too close to call so they should not be called.

Benefit of the doubt goes to the attacker style. I like this, but I think I'm more for the official to make a call and them to get the benefit when it's close. Take the clanger out of the game.

Same as cricket umpires never give run outs even when it's obvious.

VAR needs better cameras and preferably computerised offside decisions. .

And imo calls for handballs and offsides should be an immediate stop to the game unless clear advantage by the opposing team.

I think offsides should have a “lines person call” similar to Umpire Call in cricket.

There’s a say 10cm window in which they opt for the on field decision. Brings more respect back to the officials, as someone said earlier, officials just tend to not make calls these days and are second guessing what var will do.

well add to this list after today's masterclass by Mr. Atwell.. again showing how clueless english refs are.. Clear penalty denied/soft one given and then Azpi sees a red for absolultely nothing.. but we all should be happy and safe in the knowledge that this ref and his team will happily go ahead and ref the next game with no repurcussions .. as TT said today.. its surprising that it doesnt surprise us anymore..
