June 10, 20251 yr “Worth noting Chelsea still retain faith in Robert Sanchez, who finished the season strongly, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders.Chelsea spent around £45m on Jorgensen and Penders and back both to become elite keepers.Maignan was a market opportunity, explored by the sporting directors. Enzo Maresca not driving the move, and Chelsea sticking to their valuation.🧤”“Market opportunity = ££££
June 10, 20251 yr Its fine - He wants to move to us, so if we dont get him now, we simply sign a pre contract in Jan. AC milan will lose him for free. Their loss. Petrovic's gain.
June 10, 20251 yr It's incredible they think this is Milan holding out for some sort of "CWC Tax" and not the obvious outcome of their previous daft overspending in the transfer market. Every club in world football knows Chelsea are happy to buy at a massively inflated price and also fire sell when we are desperate to shift players thought of as "dead wood".How the two cretins overseeing this haven't been sacked several times over is one of life's little mysteries ...
June 10, 20251 yr My guess is that AC will come back desperate as they can’t afford to let him walk for free. It’s a ploy.
June 10, 20251 yr More info. I am fairly sure if we wanted him we'd get him but didn't want to overpay. Not sure why people are so emotional over these transfers. Or transfer opportunities. We don't know what is discussed behind closed doors and we are relying on drops of inside information on players called rumours. No need to shout or throw toys when we have 20% of the info and background. Again the SD's are worst people on the planet. f**king hilarious 😂 Edited June 10, 20251 yr by evissy
June 10, 20251 yr More PR from the clownshow. If they "have faith in goalkeepers at the club" and "it was not a position they were looking at recruiting this summer" why negotiating for Maignan at all?

June 10, 20251 yr The problem now with the PL being so prestigious and where the money is, apart from Saudi, is that it's a victim to it's own success. Foreign clubs will ask for crazy valuations on their players. Look at Wirtz and the asking price for him. He's relatively unproven and yet £100m+. It happened with us and Enzo and Caicedo. Problem is, this is what will happen now. Unless you go after players with low release clauses. It does amaze me, though, that AC Milan value Maignan at £20m+ but didn't hold out when City offered £46m for Reijnders Edited June 10, 20251 yr by Sunspear_88
June 10, 20251 yr Author I feel disappointed that AC Milan wouldn’t accept our valuation. He’s already told them he’s running down his contract and he wants to move to Chelsea and they still refused to sell him.Yeah okay we could have offered more but at least we’ve shown that we’re willing to walk away if we can’t reach an agreement. That’ll be in their mind whenever we negotiate a deal for any players. It’s a short term loss and a long term gain imo.
June 10, 20251 yr How can you value a so-called elite GK being signed as your new #1 at only £8-10m when you've already signed Sanchez for £25m, Jorgensen for £21m, Penders for £17m, Petrovic for £13m and Slonina for £8m ?It really doesn't feel like Milan were taking the piss here, and were already factoring in that he only had one year left on his current deal. The icing on the cake is that they now say they are happy with the existing GK options. Idiots.

Maresca's said he is fine with the keepers we have and trust them. SD's present him with the idea of looking at prospects to strengthen the area. They decide if a good one arrives they go for him. They see Maignan and decide he should be pretty cheaply available. They value him at 8m or so. Milan go greedy and want 30m. We end up offering the double we think of him and pull the plug because Milan doesn't budge. Maresca is more than fine with that. End of story. Where is the drama here?

June 10, 20251 yr I see this as an opportunistic interest, an experienced goalkeeper on the last year of his contract who made it clear he wants out. With Petrovic coming back and Sanchez's improvement over the last couple of months, we're actually not desperate for another keeper right now, but if Maignan's available for nominal fee, it makes sense to at least try. He would add some quality and experience to this young team. But we don't need to be throwing away another 20-30 million on goalkeepers this summer. I can't blame Milan for trying their luck, based on our ridiculous spending habits in recent years, but I'm glad the club are standing firm. Of course there will be 'fans' who will twist this into some way to sh*t on the club/owners somehow*. I expect Milan will lower their valuation significantly over the course of the summer when the reality hit that they will lose him for nothing if they don't sell, so I doubt this is over.*edit - see what I mean ↓ Edited June 10, 20251 yr by bluedave
June 10, 20251 yr So we can’t spend £20 million on a world Class goalkeeper because he’s only got 1 year left on his deal . But we paid £25 million for Sanchez who was third choice and 1 year left on his deal. Mind boggling

If you are not looking to buy a new keeper and you are offered one, you just say no, thanks. Clubs/agents offer players to other clubs all the time. You don't make a bid unless you're interested. They clearly were interested in Maignan and tried to pressure Milan into lowering the fee. When it failed, they came out with an embarrassing explanation.
June 10, 20251 yr Friday - Chelsea really want Maignan. Enzo Maresca is pushing for the player. Tuesday - Chelsea trust their GK's. Maresca is not driving this deal. All from Romano by the way.

Why is that embarrassing? They were interested in Maignan 8m, not Maignan 25m or something like that. To me that is very very simple. They saw an opportunity to get experienced head in the dressing room but not for 20m+. How have they failed? We read the rumours. They hopefully don't put any effort in that.

June 10, 20251 yr The board doesn’t come out of this with any credit IMO.If you have faith in your keepers then why bid in the first place? If you rate Maignan that much to publicly go after him, unsettle him and agree personal terms with him then a few million is unlikely to be a deal breaker hours before the window shuts , they are obviously trying to give Milan a few hours to change their stance.CWC tax?? Is that the media briefing they are going with now?We could have bought a right footed winger in the time we’ve spent talking to Milan. And just because we’ve sold or loaned to Milan for cheap previously it didn’t mean they would give us mates rates in return. We all know Italian clubs can be tight with money. If anything it makes our board look naive. Not a good look and they clearly think us fans will swallow any info that’s fed to us even if it clearly contradicts any previous statements or actions.
