Is the Lampard era coming to an end?

Or so we are made to believe

Lot of talk about his goals, but his assists are also important. He has 6, only Mata (9) and Torres (8) has more, and in the PL he's second with 5 to Mata's 7.
He was involved in 37% of our PL goals, Studge is second at 32% and Mata is third at 29%. The best of the rest is Torres and Ramires with 13%, Drogba 10%...
I know; lies, damned lies and statistics, but this is still pretty impressing.

It is coming to an end, but still look at him.... I'd be surprised if I lived to see another Chelsea midfielder (or any team for that matter) who can put up the numbers Franky does.  Im not even 30 yet.

If  had a son and I wanted him to play football(and if I do I will!!!),  Frank will always be the player I would tell him to model himself on.  I really cant think of a criticism, think he has been pretty much the perfect professional and club servant.  Irreplaceable .....until I have a son anyways :P

Havent got the stats in front but 1 in 5 of his goals roughly speaking are pens.

You describe Essien and Meireles as defensive midfielders, but class Ballack as an attacking one? All three of those are box-to-box and do as much attacking as defending, which is pretty much what you claim to be wanting.

I really am not a fan of the argument along the lines of 'who will replace x's goals'. I find that it oversimplifies the situation to a point where it implies you could build a fluid team out of the top scorers and assisters in the league and expect to win it. It's an argument that teams have had for years, but it never really directly happens like the stats imply. Cronaldo leaves Man Utd, so that's 40 goals for them gone (plus assists), after a year they adjust and win the league again and that's without a major attacking signing in the mean time. Ronaldo scores 34 goals for Barcelona and gets sold, how can you replace those goals? Well they won the league the next year...

If a team is playing well it will create chances and if it creates enough chances someone will score them. It doesn't matter if it's one legendary player or half the squad are getting on the end of chances. My assertion is the team play better when Lampard isn't in the side (in general that is, of course there are games when that isn't true) and with a player who is a better fit and offers the things we lack, we will play better overall and score more goals. Meireles has had both good and bad games for us, the last one was a bad one and Lampard should start the next game, but it's a position we have to rotate now and the starting berth should go to whomever is in form at the time and more importantly it's a position we should look to improve. Whether we make it redundant by bringing in a winger and changing formation so that Mata is behind the striker or we straight up sign someone else to play that position doesn't matter to me. Looking at it in purely Darwinian terms, it's a position that can be improved and we should look to do so. So is right back and unless a rest for A Cole will cure his bad form, possibly a left back as well.

As Nibs says swings and roundabouts and all that. You think that we can replace 28% of goals scored or assisted and improve on that, because others have done similarly. I don't, at least not right at the moment. One thing you aren't mentioning in your argument is that Barcelona had this other fella called Rivaldo effectively replace Ronaldo when he left. He scored a similar number the next season.

I don't really see how this can go much further. We fundamentally disagree on the point of whether we play better or worse when Lampard is playing. You're relying on the idea that the team plays better with no supporting numbers, and I'm relying on numbers which you think aren't reliable. So we're at an impasse. I'm happy to call it a draw.

NEVER SURRENDER!

I mean, yeah it's probably fair to leave it there. Also, there are no supporting numbers for something as subjective as playing better which is why I can't provide any.

I'm sure there would be. But putting them all together would take some time and one would have to ask whether it's worth it.

If I wasn't such a lazy sh*t I'd put my factor analysis skills to use. As such i'm content to settle the argument by saying you're both wrong, and I am right.

I suppose it would be a good way to put this essay off for a couple of hours. Having just read a journal on Research Policy in The US, a book on the philosophical implications of the Internet and a couple of other sources, I can safely say that I'm tempted... Unfortunately first I have to read ACM SIGCOMM Computer Communication Review Volume 39. Yay.

Have you ever seen Chelsea win the CL? That'll be a yes.

Not sure this has been mentioned elsewhere ..

Lampard hit his 150th Premiership goal last night, the first midfielder ever to do so.

The next on the list is Giggs with 112, and he's played about 643000 games more.

Lamps is 5th in the overall goalscorers chart.

48 penalties for Chelsea, 42 scored. That's 9 out of every 10 folks, and I'm not sure if those stats include spot-kicks from shoot-outs.

Many of those pens have been pressure kicks.

Well done Lamps ..

Actually, you missed it!  We had a lovely time though.  Cake and ice cream and Jelly.  And silly hats.  It was great.

The thread itself will be self fulfilling if it keeps going long enough!

Duh, he doesn't make enough last ditch tackles, hollywood passes, or 30 yard screamers. Obviously he sucks!
[/sarcasm]
Very good player, though very one dimensional which is a bit of a problem now that he inevitably needs to wind things down.

Which dimension is that, his passing game, assists, goal scoring etc etc blah blah...
