Man of Steel was sick!

I popped in my DVD of Django Unchained last night, the first time i'd seen it since it was in theatres. Man I love that film. Leonardo DiCaprio really is amazing in it, as is Cristoph Waltz.

Outlander - 7/10

Basically about a guy from the future who's ship crash lands in a w=viking village in Norway, with a dragon-type creature on board which escapes and kills a lot of people.

I thought it was okay. Watchable.

Space odyssey 2001 and Blade Runner, very overrated in my opinion.

2001 was one of the worst films I've ever seen. Absolutely nothing seems to happen in it. it's just one random thing after another that don't tie together. And it's...painfully slow.

Maybe you two weren't high enough

Speaking about getting High...Just watched a Rockumentary about Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. I had just listened to that cd the other day to, so that rockumentary was on point. So Syd Barrett took enough acid to have a permanent trip. That is crazy.

Just watched this one:

Quality movie making, simple as that. Phillip Glass' music suits the movie so well... Again.

---

And not only is it a quality movie, the "story" and how it evolves because of the movie is just fascinating.

If you haven't seen the movie, you might not want to see these "making of" clips, but they're interesting as well:

Watched Man of Steel last week.

Not bad, not great though! The classic Superman feel just wasnt there and there was far too much sci-fi nonsense for my liking.

...too much sci-fi nonsense for my liking.

You mean they tried to explain Superman's powers with some (pseudo) science or what sort of science fiction elements are there in the movie?

I just preferred it when they kept it simpler. I realise he is an alien so there is undoubtedly sci-fi content....but I think they focused too much on special effects etc and it was all a bit over the top.

The first half hour could have been done in 5 minutes.

Apart from that, good movie.

2 final gripes:

1. Lois Lane is nowhere near as nice as the real Lois Lane ;)

2. No Superman music :(

I've just seen 'The Road' with Viggo Mortensen (sic). The film concerns a father's attempts to guide his son to a better area, in the wake of an undefined apocalypse. In the North America of the film, everything natural is dying; trees, crops, etc. There are few survivors of the disaster and some of those few have joined marauding gangs, or turned to cannibalism, to survive.

Mortensen and his son (both of whom are starving) trek across a dying, grey, landscape, avoiding the gangs and others, searching in empty homes for scraps of food and useful items. The father carries a revolver, loaded with two shells, and drills his son in how to kill himself, should he (the father) pass away.

The danger with post apocalyptic films such as these is that of becoming predicatable. The Road is not predictable but the surprises are not there for their own sake but, rather, seem considered and a natural part of the tale. Despite all of the above sounding dour, even depressing, the film ends on a hopeful note and is a thoughtful, satisfying, watch.

Sounds like a sacrifice in the name of fatherly love! I was given this book once but I never read it as I heard its a bit depressing!

Yep - don't watch it if you're feeling unhappy - it won't raise your mood! :-)

Yeah I saw that one - it was unrelentingly miserable!  Did it end on an upnote?  I didn't remember that.  I didn't hate it but wouldn't want to watch it again!

(Mind you I regularly go to the cinema with friends and I was trying to remember what we'd seen so I asked my friend if she had a list as she always books and can check online what she's booked in the past.  She sent me a list of what we've seen in the last two years or so.  There are films on that list that I would swear I haven't even heard of, ever, let alone seen!  Isn't getting old wonderful - you can enjoy a book or film over again as you can't really remember what happened! .....or is that just me?)

It was a soft-of upnote but I don't want to spoil it. Mind you, it was an upnote only compared to the rest of the film! Good film though.

I'm with you about films I've apparently seen...

I think Viggo Mortensen is a great actor, and would love to see The Road.  I missed it when it did the rounds here, so I guess I'll have to get it on DVD now.

But thanks for reminding me of it, Shirley!

Watched The Fighter, great movie and I usually dont like these kind of movies but Wahlberg and a skinny Bale were both excellent.

What I find even more amazing is how Bale can change his body type so god damn fast, its amazing if its all legit and without any illegal substances.

I, too am a fan of his acting, although I couldn't help but feel somewhat disappointed when I read this!

Been watching a lot of movies in the last few days as my exams finished on Monday and i'm on holidays now and decided to catch up with some movies i've been told are must sees:

Raging Bull - Great movie but I don't understand why people think it is better than Taxi Driver? I found the main character to be far more interesting in Taxi Driver than I did in Raging Bull, I never sympathized with Jake LaMotta, if anything he frustrated me and I didn't really feel bad when he self-destructed his own life. As opposed to in Taxi Driver where you could see he was doing the best he could with his mental issues.

There Will be Blood - All I can say is Daniel Day Lewis is an absolutely amazing actor and the movie was fantastic.

Clerks - Funny little independent movie, would recommend if you like something low budget with witty dialogue.

Full Metal Jacket - This is the one I have the most gripes with. Having seen 2001 and Clockwork Orange I had high hopes for it and had been told by many people it was an unbelievably good movie. After watching it I can't help but wonder what the f**k was the point of that movie. The marine training camp section of the movie was well done I thought, although the ending of it was a bit predictable, but once the film shifted to Vietnam I never really got a sense of what the movie was trying to say or do, and the ending came about very suddenly. I didn't need a movie to tell me that people die in war because that much is obvious, but the movie never established much emotional connection with the characters in Vietnam and aside from the surprise of the identity of the sniper in the building, there was very little parts of interest. The cinematography was quality as you would expect though.

But having previously watched Apocalypse Now (in my opinion the greatest movie of all time), and to a lesser extent Platoon, I was left disappointed with a movie i'd been wanting to watch for ages which in the end never really lived up to the shocking nature of war that is displayed in those two movies. I think if I could go back in time i'd watch Full Metal Jacket before either of those because I probably would have enjoyed it more, but considering that it was made after both of those movies, you'd think there would have been something new in there.

Bale is brilliant, brilliant actor. Probably in my top 10 of all time best actors. Bold statement, I know. However, I consider myself young so I didn't watch much of the old movies, so I can't comment on Brando, Newman, Michael Caine, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Cagney, Gary Cooper, etc, etc... as a great actors, but I truly believe they are.

But Bale is brilliant. His transformations and dedication are amazing. His performances in The Machinist and The Fighter are especially my favourites.

Full Metal Jacket

It's a decent movie, but it's not even Kubrick's best war movie. Check out Paths of Glory if you can.

The trailer is a bit cheesy, but the movie was released in the '50s, which explains the style of the trailer.

I like Full Metal Jacket a lot. It's up there with the under-valued 'Hamburger Hill'. The central character (Modine), and others, seem more genuine than those in Platoon.

That aside (and soz if you know this) I'm amazed whenever I watch FMJ that it was largely filmed in London's East End Docks. Amazing feat and, unless you know, it's not easy to tell. It was made in the UK as Kubrick wouldn't fly out of the UK, due to a fear of flying.
