Anyone recommend any other real scary flicks? Already seen Paranormal Activity recently, and I won't watch Saw, that's

a little too gory for me......I mean the Mrs.

Then Human Centipede is probably out of the question... :happy001:

Most new horror movies tend to be a bit sh*t, which is why I usually stay away from them.

I remember this one was quite atmospheric, but I can't remember if it was scary:

The trailer seems pretty bad, though. That's the first Guillermo Del Toro movie I remember seeing.

This one is probably more like a psychological thriller than horror, but I thought it was quite good:

I'm sure others will have better suggestions. Horror is not one of my favourite genres (there are some good oldies, though), but I thought I'd throw those into the mix, even though they're not exactly new.

The Road Not Taken is a brilliant poem by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim

Because it was grassy and wanted wear,

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

Just to clarify, moi, I'd no clue you'd already posted the poem here!

Went to see superman today....The guys that do the effects are getting better n better....Cant wait for pacific rim

Did you know the cape was entirely CGI ?

Olympus Has Fallen

OTT action film with Gerard Butler, Aaron Ekhart and Morgan Freeman.

Stuff blows up, stupidly high body count, nonsensical plot basically straight out of the 80's action film mold.

Junk food for the eyes, worth a watch if you fancy monging out for a couple of hours.

Bale is brilliant, brilliant actor. Probably in my top 10 of all time best actors. Bold statement, I know. However, I consider myself young so I didn't watch much of the old movies, so I can't comment on Brando, Newman, Michael Caine, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Cagney, Gary Cooper, etc, etc... as a great actors, but I truly believe they are.

But Bale is brilliant. His transformations and dedication are amazing. His performances in The Machinist and The Fighter are especially my favourites.

Certainly gave one of the best ever, some say the best ever, performances as a child actor in his first role in Empire of the Sun.

I like Full Metal Jacket a lot. It's up there with the under-valued 'Hamburger Hill'. The central character (Modine), and others, seem more genuine than those in Platoon.

That aside (and soz if you know this) I'm amazed whenever I watch FMJ that it was largely filmed in London's East End Docks. Amazing feat and, unless you know, it's not easy to tell. It was made in the UK as Kubrick wouldn't fly out of the UK, due to a fear of flying.

One of those films that whenever it's on, no matter even if it's half way through I'll always sit and watch it.

I'm going to re-watch 'The Comancheros' - a John Wayne film that's up there with 'The Sons of Katie Elder' and 'Chisum'. It's not in the same league as 'The Searchers' or 'Red River' but the story is wide-ranging, full of action, genuinely funny in places and features a very memorable cameo from Lee Marvin. John Wayne films have become a cliche, but many are very good and very watchable.

People always react with incredulity when I tell them i've never seen a Star Wars film or an Indiana Jones film, and that I;ve only seen 1 James Bond film all the way through.

Not sure why they feel people Have to watch those films.

The film does jump from location to location, or from mood to mood, but in doing this, Kubrick reflects reality more than some other film-makers. As an example, there's an unwritten rule in fiction and films that, if you meet a character, and the author or director spends time on that character, then they'll be in the book or film, later on. This doesn't happen in FMJ (i.e. with the helicopter door gunner, or the senior officer at the scene of the VC massacre. Real life is bitty - you meet some people and they are in your life for that moment of meeting only. Life's pretty random. You do something and, often, move on and never re-visit that thing/event again. Film-makers tend not to reflect this random-ness as loose ends annoy them. Life is full if jumpy, incomplete, loose-ends - the invitation that's declined, the journey not made, the unspoken compliment, the road not taken (who coined that phrase? - don't know but it says a lot).

Not for me. I think people are just dressing it up as some kind of "high art" so to speak, when in reality it was just poor. Same goes for 2001 Space Odyssey - awful film; cult following; never understood it. Even The Shining was pretty crap. He took a good story and turned it into a fairly dull film. Just not a Kubrick fan whatsoever.

No one HAS to watch anything, but not having seen any of the SIX Star Wars films, FOUR Indy films and only ONE out of the 23 Bond films is astonishing. The latter especially, since I'm a massive Bond fan. Sort your life out, Zeta!

Are you saying people are pretending to like a movie to seem more intelligent or something like that?

Lets be honest, there are only 3 Star War movies and 3 Indy movies.

Are you saying people are pretending to like a movie to seem more intelligent or something like that?

Not pretending, they may like it very much. I just think that in the case of some of Kubrick's films people overlook flaws and perceive them as something they're not.

I don't think it is dressing up a film. I like FMJ but not, for example, 2001. When you like a film, you like it. The reasons perhaps come later but you go with your initial reaction. Hell, I even liked 'Iron Sky' !

Just not a Kubrick fan whatsoever.

I can understand your view that 2001 is over-rated and perhaps the same can be said for The Shining (albeit that I don't agree with that view) but the same criticism cannot be even contemplated in respect to Paths of Glory, The KillingLolita, Dr Strangelove or Barry Lyndon: masterful films.

A person's view of a film is subjective - we all respond to films differently and, if a person thinks that Kubrick is over-rated, we can't necessarily say 'you're wrong' because there's no wrong or right. We're dealing with opinions. This applies even if there's a consensus that a certain director is 'great', I think.

Watched "The Raid" at weekend an action film from Indonesia.

Very basic plot but the action set pieces, especially martial arts ones are brilliant fun to watch.

If you like seeing people's heads explode and people kicking the granny out of each other I would definitely recommend it.

I saw the Great Gatsby this week.  Really wasn't looking forward to it - didn't like the book, the film didn't have great reviews and I thought it was going to be style over substance.  So I was surprised that I really enjoyed it!  Not the greatest but very watchable.
