Bruce Springsteen - Waitin' on a Sunny Day - The Song

It's raining up here in the West Of Scotland at the moment !

Any excuse, I accept, to post a Springsteen song...

A very interesting programme on BBC Radio 4 about the history of dissent. The programme is presented by Ian Hislop the editor of that fine magazine, Private Eye. Programme was broadcast on three days at 9.30am (U.K. Time) from Tuesday, 28-30 August.

Next week sees the start of an exhibition at the British Museum about the history of dissent.

Currently watching and listening to one of Joan Baez's concerts in Paris earlier this year. @moi this may have been the concert you were at. I saw Joan at the Royal Albert Hall at the end of May so watching this brings back memories.

Ooh yes @Boyne this was the concert I was at. If you get a shot of the audience and you see a devastatingly gorgeous brunette in the middle of the front row of the balcony, that'll be moi!

Although my favorite band by far are Saint Etienne, I listen to a wide variety of music.

Recent faves include:

Foxbase Beta - Richard X's reworking of Foxbase Alpha, Saint Etienne's Classic debut album

Saint Etienne Present Songs for the Dog & Duck - a far more cohesive compilation than the previous 'Mario's Cafe' set

The Small Hours by Eliot - a recent discovery (thanks to the StEt mailing list!) that includes 'Love To Be Real', a gorgeous track heavily inspired by Saint Etienne's 'Former Lover'.

Sock It To 'Em J.J.: The Soul Years by Jimmy James and The Vagabonds - another recent discovery, this 2-CD set pulsates with '60s style soul and energy.

Foot Stomping Soul by Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band - in a similar vein to the Jimmy James set, picked up on a recommendation, my very latest CD purchase.

Walking The Line: The Legendary Sun Recordings by Johnny Cash - no home should be without a Johnny Cash compilation, and this set is not only one of the best available, but is also a total bargain.

Afterglow by Dot Allison - her debut solo CD and still her best output to date, not quite on a level with One Dove's 'Morning White Dove' perhaps, but still a classic in it's own right.

First time I’ve set eyes on this thread. I’m seeing Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band at the Half Moon in Putney tonight.

Hes gotta be marching on a bit. The length of the set is probably linked to the endurance of his bladder!

Alas, I couldn't see you in the crowd. I've found a longer recording of the concert. What an amazing voice Joan has. I think I'll have to go an see her when she tours next year.

A new 4-CD boxset of Tom Petty songs "An American Treasure" (some unreleased stuff, plenty of live versions, and versions of songs that were not used on albums, as well as some lesser known album tracks) came out a couple of weeks ago.

It's fantastic. This video was put together with contributions from fans, and is a different (and better version of an album track)

Saw Geno a few years ago at a small club in Gloucestershire.  Apart from the fact that I was wearing the same boots as he was, he got through a bottle of red wine and a couple of bourbons during the first set. and most of a second bottle in the second set.  But he was a great bloke, chatted with people before and after and it was a wonderful performance.

He was very nice, but I had to go check and I saw him in 2004, so he might well have gotten as old and crotchety as we are now.

Saw him in a tiny Blues club run by some mates of mine in a pub skittle alley in Whitecroft in the Forest of Dean.  Sadly,  it's closed now, but they had some big names appear there.

I saw Roy Ayers at the Forum earlier this year, and he would fall into the “ too crotchety” bracket now alas.

Had a chat with a 93 year old jazz drummer a while back. He was a navigator on a Wellington Bomber in WW2- got shot down and spent 3 years in a POW camp- there were 3 bands in the camp, one of them needed a drummer and the rest in history.

He could still perform a decent drum roll till the end. I suspect he was taking Cod Liver Oil Capsules as suppositories- keeps the elbows and wrists nice and lubricated!

Ps Marlena Shaw’s now a trifle too old to be honest. We saw her at Ronnie Scott’s. A mate of mind who was pissed, thought he was entering the karzi and basically ended up backstage, catching her without her wig on. She didn’t exactly chase him out with a broom but it wasn’t far off!

Not sure. Had some great times upstairs over the years- think it varies night by night eg Soul, Jazz, Brazillian, Cuban - mostly DJs sometimes Jam sessions.

Theres a good soul/ jazz funk reunion once a month at the Burlington Arm Mayfair.

There’s some good names there. Papa George ( always get him mixed up with Boy George!), still regularly plays the Cavern in Raynes Park for free.

Have seen Papa George a few times: a fine performer. On a couple of occasions his drummer was Sam Kelly and the bass player was Peter Stroud both of whom are fine musicians. Stroud and Papa George have also performed with Bad Influence, the lead singer of which is Val Cowell. She has a fine voice.

Matt Berry has a new album out (Yes comedy actor Toast of London/IT Crowd etc. Matt Berry) of old TV Theme tunes. I can’t stop listening to it, the cover of Rainbow is amazing :laugh2:

I'm listening to the sound of fingers tapping keys on keyboards, mouse clicks. The whirr of the photocopier, muffled voices in the distance, doors closing.

The air conditioning unit's low hum and the artificial air it pumps through this office. Telephones ringing, and occasionally, laughter.

I'm tired of all of this, but I can't escape til Friday. Then it will be

the sound of a cigarette lighter clicking, pints being poured and pint glasses being set down on the wooden table. Raucous laughter, intermittently punctuated by the sound of my fist slamming into the table, emphasising a point when I'm telling an anecdote. It's always then when I know I've had a bit to drink.

The engine of the bus beneath my feet and the seat vibrating. Car horns honking and the shouts of the Polish people in my neighbourhood. The sizzling noise of the huge slab of meat in my kebab shop, followed by a low buzz as slices of flesh are sheared off it and handed to me in a polystyrene box, topped with salad and chilli sauce.

The jangle of my keys as I fumble for them, and stumble into my flat. Bedsprings as I literally fall into bed.

Hours later, the blissful sound of silence as I wake up on Saturday morning, the sound of freedom.
