Funny how we  would take thousands all over the country but couldn't catch the District line to Upton Park !

fairly depressing turnouts for most games there. Best one I reckon was the night game we won 2-0, Dixon and Nevin .

Rising Sun. Sspot on we even turned up at Millwall and had a go. Shame as always we were in different mobs or we would of killed em like the 80s and 90s.

Dont know what hold West Ham had on Eccles, but they did even though early 70s we always done em.wasnt till that year the corner flag went backwards and forwards in the 80s that West Ham realised again when mobbed up we would always kill em. Which we did from then on. They lived on their name. The you tube bit where Swallow and i keep forgetting the big black fellows name sh*t it on the tube. They knew we had a proper mob and of course Victoria when they couldnt run fast enough. Even that year on Parsons Green Big BG denied he was West Ham. We always had the best firm just everyone done their own thing. I love Chelsea FC  As they found out when they came in little mobs always with 5 mins to go till kick off or the end of the game. Like the Krays they found South London alot harder.

Fcuk me the corner flag incident at facking upton park . That was my 1st ever chelsea game in the smoke back in 1981 and i was 14 back then so still at School and quite wet behind my ears when it came to the do and donts at the football .

i recall playing football for the School team that  saturday  morning and i was the captian of the team , and i asked my games teacher before the game ´´ sir can i please come off at H-T since i want to goto the football match today > ´´ his answer was ´´ but doncaster dont kick off untill 15:00 today ´´  > ´´ but iam going to West ham v chelsea sir ´´

i must have been a sh*te CB and captian as me games teacher said OK .

i went down with a mate who was the year above in School who was a chelsea fan aswell .

i have to say that our money was very tight back then so no pushing the boat out etc etc and had to watch every penny . We Get off the train at Kings X ,both our 1st times in the smoke and started to walk from KINGS X to westham upton park to save money .

we walk to a Garage outside kings X somewhere and Ask this bloke who was under a hood ´´ can you please tell us how to Get to West ham upton park please sir ‘’  > ‘’ fack me are you two facking stupid ‘’ > thats the first time i ever heard a cockney speak and the FACK me and FACKING hell killed me .

he told us to go onto the tube station that was across the Road and Ask from there > so we both walk onto the tube station and talk about rabbits caught in head lights mindset we just did not have a clue . I clock this gent walking by with a blue/white bar  scarf on round his neck > put 2 and 2 together and said to my mate ‘’ lets follow him as he must be gojng to the game ‘’

thank fcuk he was not going to QPR or EVERTON as we would have followed him to there .

we gets to upton park tube station and just follow the crowd down the Road towrads where ever the ground was.

we walk down on the left hand side ,and i clock an old dear with a stall in here front garden selling hats scarfs etc etc which was all mostly claret/ blue sh*te ,but what did catch my eye was a yellow/ green chelsea away type of scarf > so I ask the old girl for the Chelsea scarf and ‘’ can you olease put it into a bag ‘’ > so I type of knew I should hide my colors ,so I was not that green behind my ears .

my mate went up the wall when he said ‘’ for FACKS  sake  **** ,we you will get a FACKING good kicking down here with that scarf on FACKING show ‘’ > ‘’ but she is putting it in a bag for me **** for f**kS sake ‘’  for sure I had not turned into fully cockney unlike my mate since the garage at KINGS X .

the old dear only put my new scarf into a clear see throu plaggy bag ,so I stuffed down my kegs straight away for obvious reasons .

we get to the ground safe and sound and see two ques > away end £1.70 > Home end £1 > so me and matey jump into the Home end que . We was both crapping our pants inside the ground behind that goal and the away end looked quite packed to us .

there was a fence between the two sets of fans with a type of doorway way in it with a huge bobby stood on the gated door and we tried to pass him into the chelsea end > FACK OFF this is for chelsea fans only > ‘’ but we are chelsea fans officer ‘’ > FACK off you couple of CANTS and dont let me see you two again ‘’

i turn to my mate ‘’ **** WT FACK IS A CANT ? ‘’ > i pull out my yellow/ green chelsea away scarf and the bobby cant Get us into the chelsea end quick enough .

so we are stood in the chelsea at the bottom right hand corner > saved 70 p and now we can relax si cecwe are with all the chelsea fans .

think we was stood there about 5 mins and the teams were not on the pitch yet ,but i notice that we are stood amongst a group of chaps ,there was a lot of them and a few Blacks who all had these green flying jackets on and what caught my eye and set alarm bells off was that i clocked a few off them with small round claret/blue West ham badges on > in the inside of their jackets on the orange lining part .

said to my mate ‘’ **** i think we better move towards  the top part of the ground ‘’ so we made our way upto the top left hand corner area of the away end and this is my account of what happened that day .

from where i had just been standing it all type of kicked off and i recall seeing a black West ham chap with green flying jacket on jump the wall onto the pitch and type of wave across more West ham from the bottom corner of that ground > i cant recall if any West ham came across no mans land to join in the fray but it was quite busy down at the bottom with green jackets swinging at each other .

Then the corner flag got picked up and launched into the Chelsea end > then it got lobbed back towards the West ham end > to which the said corner flag got launched into the chelsea end > i cant recall how my tines this corner fkags swapped ends but it ended up as half a corner flag after been snapped at the West ham end with a horrible looking spike on it .

from memory i was just watching this corner flag going backwards and forwards .

chelsea lost the game 4-0 ,but what did unnerve me by end of the game the away end seemed to be far more empty and we was still stood near the top part of the ground ,and everytime i looked down towrads the West han fans in the new corner flag section ofvtheir ground this West ham fan kept on pointing at ME and type of filming with his hands and then pointing outside the ground ,whatever he was doing be got right into my head as leaving the ground andcthe walk back to the tube station was now stressing me to f**k/FACK > i was that stressed i could not recall if i was a Northern monkey or a cockney wide boy FFS .

outside the ground was nothing but shocking > all i recall is walking by st Georges market and untold Numbers of  West ham flying jackets knocking the fcuk out of whoever ( chelsea ) left right and centre . There was chelsea jumping onto back of London buses and getting dragged off for a good olde East end kicking > i was terrified and how me and my mate got back to upton park tube station untouched i will never know >

maybe it was the 3 stripped jumper Polly velts and greasy hair that saved my bacon ,you tell me .

another funny thing about that day was my School teams KIT was claret/ blue and the newspapers saturday morning were full of two West ham players one been Ian Bishop and i cant recall the other one ? Had hit that back Pages over a sex scandal and was it they was caught in bed with  each other or one of the players got caught shagging the other players wife ?

did i mention we saved 70 p each going into the West ham end

Ddr....happy days though......

I have to be honest with you LF my hands was not getting dirty back when i was that young and still at School and i got more active on the FV front after leaving School .

i have taken more than enough beatings and got more fat lips when running about with donny rovers all over the country and at donny Home games than any soft mick ,but that day at West ham for me was a eye opener and i grew up or wised up very quick after my 1st trip to the smoke .

iam trying to recall how it was outside the ground after the game as in who was knocking the hell out if who ,and i just Get Flash backs to no end of green flying jackets oustside of st Georges market knocking the fcuk out of each other and comman sense tells me it was West ham knocking chelsea all over the place ?

for sure i dont recall the protection of any Police escort or seeing any Police just green flying jackets getting dirty hands . I think my young are and looks maybe saved my bacon and like i said my 3 stripped jumper . My memory is a blank after  the st goerges market incident i cant recall how we got back to KINGS X  then donny on the train on the tube via whatever tube station  But i do recall most what happened that day before st Georges market .

i was that transfixed and watching that corner flags flight path and projections everytime that i cant give an honest account of what was going down on the terrace below me . I was sh*t worried about the direction of that corner flag .

just read your account of that day ,and you say that chelsea held their own down the front of the  terrace .

one question ,since that West ham chap kept on pointing at me before end of the game ,i kept on looking round thinking he must have been picking somebody Else out ,but like i said i think a lot if chelsea had cleared off Home before final whistle as they knew what to expect after the game ? Was that correct or just my imagination on the chelsea melt before final whistle

Ddr that day they did though it was the first time we went with a decent firm for years and gave it to em back From that day on though we grew in confidance and lads like the twins , nightmare, Hickey and The Surrey firm (no knives just fists and feet) etc started to pull us together. No other firm has gone in the Strawberry and run em out. Not even the famous ha ha ICF.

We gave a bit at the end and not to bad though due to numbers we did get bashed though stood. Your right alot melted never to be seen again. Though the likes of de and the famous one armed man still turned up and done their bit when needed. For that will be forever grateful. Like i said Chelsea had the best firm when together though they very rarely came together. We were from right across London and the home counties, not like the Gypsies who still lived in very poor housing in a crap hole called the East End. Though local.

Iam going to add what a donnywhite said to me only last week about why he enjoyed going to the Odd cfc away game with me .

’’ **** whenever i went to a chelsea away game with you he was taken back by how we would allways go to a pre named pub  or pubs that was allways rammed with chelsea by 11:30 > you would go whatever area and pub and take over it . He mentioned a pub at notts Forest away ,think it was when Steve clark first played at chelsea > he said he was so impressed with the chelsea fans attitude that day and way things was done , i think the pub that day was called the lady grey or olde lady or Something .

We was sat in the Seat for this game in the big Forest stand that run along the side of the pitch ,i was sat next to Steve clarks wife or girlfriend and a couple of seats down was Greenaway ( RIP) i said to my mate thats a legend at chelsea called Mick Greenaway > and my donnywhite mate spent most of the game watching Greenaway and he was lost for words .

said donnywhite Even mentioned Greenaway last week to me when we talked ,and the donnywhite liked to Get his hands dirty

Great story.

Forgot all about that West Ham "scandal" but enjoyed taking the piss out of any West Ham supporting mates at the time. It was rumoured that Trevor Morleys wife found Morley and Bishop in bed together so she stabbed him. Don't think the rumour was actually true but he was stabbed and it was touch and go for a while.

But they both got plenty of stick from opposing supporters after that!

Thats it Trevor morely and ian bishop ,for some reason that stuck in me mind all these years to some extent

Going back to chelsea away games with my donnywhite mates In attendence .

i was taking Two of them the other week and they asked me if i recall the pub in hull that we was all in for a chelsea game at hulls old ground ? It might have been a cup game ?

they claim there was about 40+ chelsea in the pub ,Police was stood on the door and a huge hull mob walked by the pub and chelsea tried to Get out to no avail ,and ended ul setting fire to whatever part of the pub so they could Get outside ? For the life of me i cant recall this at all and you would think  that setting fire to whatever part of a pub would stay in ones memory bank .

anyone recall this by any chance ?

Ddr dont remember the pub. Remember a mid week game at the old ground at Hull. Not many of us up there. They tried coming up at us in the seats. Thank god we held and bashed em back down again we were lucky we had the higher ground....happy days.

We should write a book...........many have.

Always had a laugh at Upton Park. Used to go to East Ham college (doing my BTEC as part of my apprenticeship) and knew a lot of their lads who went to the same college.

Even met up with them for a beer on match days a couple of times, but sometimes got a bit moody when their local filled up with lads I didn’t know, so knocked it on the head after a couple of close escapes

All a bit of a laugh back in the day, but when you’re in your late teens / early twenties you’re invincible. 😀

I was asked to put down on paper about my exploits with the ddr at donny ,since basically we have at times been kicked from pillar to post both Home/away many times . On a good day we could muster 30 lads which was our downfall many times when up against bigger clubs or if we ever crossed paths with whoever entoute to games or back .

recall one day when 12 of us went to bury away > we got done in bury > then 100+ man  city kicked us all over Manchester Victoria station  to the extent we all just jumped onto the first train we saw ( our plan was getting back to donny via Piccadilly station ) but man city lot said different .

The train that we jumped onto was stopping at dirty Leeds Leeds Leeds ,so that was our connection back to donny ,problem was that

this train had come from Liverpool lime Street and was rammed to the rafters with barcodes going back upto newcastle ,they had been at Everton . It was pure murder for us but because we got inbetween two carriage doors the damage to us was not to bad ,but when some newcastle started to run blades down the door Windows it was a tad uncomfortable for us to say the least .

i have to mention this man city lad had hold of me on Victoria station and was knocking the fcuk out of us and he says > where are you  from > whack whack kick smack > doncaster > his answer > what with a Yorkshire accent like that > whack whack smack kick .

( a few weeks after that kicking from man city ,i was with  a coach load of donny at the last Wales v England Home International game at wrexham and we was in the Wales end along side of the pitch , and f**k me there was a coach load of man city who had been there when knocking fcuk out of us some weeks before ,we all had a good laugh about it )

train pulls in at Leeds and we all donny jump off < all as in all 12 of us > we go out for a pint then walk back onto Leeds station for train back to donny > on this day Leeds was away at Cardiff city i think and there is a couple of good donnywhites lads with us today .

its close to 20:30 as we walk towards gates on Leeds platforms and there is a mob of 70+ pissed off looking lads stood about at the gates > donnywhite says > it must be the Leeds lot just getting back from Cardiff  ( service crew ) so we all relax and casualy stride towards this upset looking mob

it don’t take them a second before they are walking towards us in that type of > we’re going to knock the fcuk out of you stride > we can’t figure out what’s going wrong > donny white says we’re Leeds you knobheads > the answer came back > we’re Barnsley >

now the 70+ very pissed off looking we’re Barnsley lot had been up at mboro that day > one of the Barnsley lads had been stabbed at boro during a punch up outside a pub and died > hence why 70+ pissed off mob of Barnsley was on Leeds station enroute back to Barnsley .

What newcastle lads did not do to us the Barnsley  lot did with extras added ,this was bad and it did not help our cause since donny white said > we’re Leeds you knobheads speaking for himself >

there can not be many mobs out there that have taken beatings by 4 different mobs to various scales on the same Saturday ?

the idea behind the book was to look at FV from a different side of the fence as every book out back then was allways about how whatever firm or mob had done this and that but never admitted to been done in the main ,this was going to be about the amount of times a small mob like ddr did get done .

dont get me wrong ddr did have results both home/away at times ,but our better years was when donny was in the conference  for 5 years since the 30 ddr lads were then a bigger fish in a smaller pond > Hereford been very accomadting at al, our games  > nuneaton been sh*theads .

recall a game in uxbridge London can’t recall name of team but they had a pub outside its ground called the crown < this was a very very messy incident in the pub ,and I found out  a year or so later on that the locals in the pub was chelsea chaps that day .

never took the offer up on the book as I did not want my family to know what I had been upto even thou they had a small incline I guess ,but we try our best to keep our mothers from ever seeing us with dirty hands don’t we

Didn't have a lot of time for eccles after seeing his antics after a qpr v spurs game we all went to . Beating up youngsters at the tube, it was f**king awful, one boy was actually crying

Nearly forgot about it until Brum away (5-5 game) when he was going to attack 2 young boys at a bus stop. Was soon put to rights by the rest of us . Those youngsters would have gone home badly injured.

When you have boys of your own it maddens me to think of those things.  It was never always about two groups of like minded youths going toe to toe.  Much of it was opportunistic attacks on other fans.

But getting back to Upton park , even that night game there was mad panic down by the chicken run, hundreds of Chelsea running past us, f**k knows  what happened, luckily had a motor down the road after so didn't have to run the gauntlet !

Some great stories on here, that documentary about ICF was hilarious they were on a train going the wrong way while Chelsea were laughing at em !

we get to the ground safe and sound and see two ques > away end £1.70 > Home end £1 > so me and matey jump into the Home end que .

Mate, how did you get from the North Bank into the South bank ?

Was there still terracing along the side opp. the chicken run ?

All I know is I felt every f**ker  seemed to know you were Chelsea, we even had a drink in the Bolyn once , but felt those eyes boring into us and left !

My memory is not what it used to be fella I was 14 for this game and my mate been 15 ,all that sticks out In my mind is that is was £1.70 into the away end and £1 into the west ham end part of the ground > 70pence difference it was what pulled us bite into the home end .

we paid the £1 and was stood behind the goal area with the away end chelsea fans been in a section on our left hand side ,so we just walked towards the left hand side where we saw a massive Bobby stood on a gate and he let us into the chelsea section / pen .

from my memory it was only one pen that chelsea fans had that day ? and it was In the far corner of the ground . What did that end pen hold back in those days as that will give you all an idea of the chelsea turnout that day as I thought the pen looked full ?

well it was full at the start of the game ,but by the final whistle for obvious reasons there was a lot more room and space

West Ham 1981 was my first away game with Chelsea. You have a better memory than me mate. I do recall the corner flag and I remember West Ham being in all ends of the ground. Afterwards was pure chaos, totally mental. A copper took pity on me and my mate, we were aged 13/14. I remember some big Chelsea lumps standing their ground but no question West Ham were going nuts. Blokes in their 40s doing cut throat signs to kids - dickheads. It was character building. I agree with the comments on this thread, as the casual scene developed Chelsea became the top firm in London. To their credit West Ham were organised and audacious but Chelsea dominated after the mid 80s. By 88 they were actually hiding from us.

I was the same age as you we got locked out got into the Northbank for the last 15 minutes. All the locals knew we were Chelsea every single person had colours except for us. We obviously and luckily it seems left with West Ham so didn't see any trouble after. Went a few times I always likened it to playing street football our estate had a team and sometimes you were summoned to take on the nuttiest estate in the area you went fearing the worst and were glad to get out.

A geezer round my way horrible twat changed from Chelsea to West Ham he's actually on the hooligan programme when Chelsea ran them on the tube he's looking a bit apprehensive to say the least. But I'll give him his due he saw two mates in our escort and told them to either come with him or go home and when they saw a top boy from round our way been taken away in an ambulance they went with him. West Ham were out for blood think it was 86 the year after the documentary.
