Is it good?

Reviews from gaming websites are good but the user reviews on Metacritic and Amazon are pretty scathing saying that they can't believe the game is £50 as it's just a limited cat and mouse game.

Also a lot of criticism about the amount of day one DLC on offer (if the content is ready, why isn't it included in the game?)

Inspired by watching my friend play Civilization 4, I installed Civilization 2 against recently. It took me about 1500 years to figure out the controls (i.e. found a city), by which point the Greeks came in and steamrollered my nascent Babylonian Empire. Trying again with the Vikings and doing a far better job, giving the Zulus a beatdown while watching nervously over my shoulder for the lurking Spanish.

Nothing on the original Age of Empires or the Rise of Rome expansion.

Very close to getting a next-gen console, most likely a PS4. Just need to have the guts to buy it.

Is it good?

It's okay so far. It didn't cost me £50 so I don't know where that figure has come from.

It's early days and at the moment to be honest it's already getting a little bit repetitive, but when they add more game modes and monsters and such to it, i'm sure it will be better.

It's nothing like this team's last game Left 4 Dead, in where you could do long multiplayer matches that would last up to an hour. Most matches are over in about 10-15 minutes, which again is a bit dull.

But it certainly has potential, and it's certainly playable and reasonably enjoyable.

Its a shame as Evolve is a great idea, just doesnt seem to have been executed too well. It looks the kind of game that will be a great laugh with mates, but difficult to get into with random players.

Civ 2 was released in early 1996, the firt AoE in late 1997. But mostly, how in the hell do you want to compare a 4X turn based strategy game with a RTS game? Apples and oranges.

I didn't say AoE was earlier... But I played both a lot and there are plenty of comparisons.

This is becoming a real bugbear of mine. You walk into a shop, spend £50 on a game then the person behind the counter tries to flog you a 'season pass' for another £20 - £25 to unlock all the DLC. Plus throw in the 'day one' editions of flagship games for £70 and you're now looking at spending £100 every time to reach its full potential.

I just look at that setup and feel conned. It's a real turn-off.

Loved splinter cell, was a great game and I also would like an Xbox one version .

Yeah Splinter Cell was great stealth game. Maybe not as good as Thief or MGS, but I remember it being one of the best looking games of that generation.

It's a big reason I've moved away from multiplayer games, a really solid single player experience still trumps online multiplayer for me.

Is anyone a fan of The Last of Us? I've heard so many good things about it from friends and the reviews are great but I've watched videos and it's underwhelming. Most of the time it just seems the character walks around...? What do you actually do in the game?

It's a story with zombie killing. (ft. human killing)

TLOU was hyped so much I had to buy it to see what the fuss was about. But I didn't even finish it, it was too slow for me. The graphics were outstanding, as was the voice acting but there was too much sneaking around for my liking. I'm sure FCF will disagree with me but I really don't think it's deserving of the hype.

Evolve has received mixed reviews, I'll be skipping that one.

The first Splinter Cell game was amazing!!

I'm just waiting for The Order to come out now.

Like Blueblur I didn't enjoy TLOU for some reason. I put about 5 hours into it then traded it in as it didn't seem to grab my attention unlike most people who played it.

Shadow of Mordor was probably the most enjoyable game I have played on next gen consoles (I love GTA but had played it before on PS3).

A game I have just recently started is Alien Isolation and I can't recommend it enough. I didn’t purchase it right away (got it at £19.99 on PS store) because of the IGN review which I should have avoided because most other ones were very positive. It’s not a guns all blazing shooter or anything, it’s a survival horror game which is probably the best I have played from that genre. The atmosphere is identical to Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie, the space stations, ships look stunning and it really does look like it’s taken straight from the film in terms of how it looks.

The music and atmosphere is very well done too, never had scares like it since Resident Evil 2 when I was a youngster.

For the special price it’s a steal just now.

It's a survival horror, you're surrounded by zombies and bad guys who want to kill you and you have to stay alive and progress to the objective any way you can. You can be sneaky if you want but you can also fight your way through (although ammunition is limited to increase the challenge), both approaches have their pros and cons and it's usually best to mix things up. One of my favourite methods to clear out large rooms full of zombies was to throw an empty bottle into the middle, the zombies would react to the noise wander over to where the bottle smashed, then throw a molotov cocktail into the middle of the group and watch them all go up in flames. There are also a few puzzles (which seemed to mostly involve traversing flooded chambers without your non-swimming companion drowning) thrown in there for variety.

The gameplay is well executed by is not particularly original, it's very similar to other survival horror games such as Resident Evil. Where The Last Of Us stands out is with the atmosphere, storytelling and characterisation. It's one of those rare games that you play and feel like it was designed with grown ups in mind rather than teenage boys.

Cheers Bluedave, think I'll look into getting it.

Ignore Blublur, unless it's got flashing pretty lights it can't hold his attention.

I'll start with this, The Last of Us is one of my all time favourite games.

It's a game that you're going to get out of it what you put in, if you just try to rush through the levels to be able to say you've finished it then you're probably not going to rate it that much.

Take the time to stop and listen to all the optional dialogue and read all of the various letters, diaries etc scattered through the game and you build up a bigger connection with the world that you're playing in.

The main story itself is easily the best I've played in a video game, the relationship between Joel and Ellie specifically is brilliantly written and the mo-cap and voice acting is top notch, as always with developer Naughty Dog.

Okay the game play itself isn't exactly ground break but it fits the narrative of the game, there's a huge slice of stealth to the game, especially in harder game mode settings where supplies are limited, so if sneaking isn't your thing, again you'll not enjoy it.

Me personally, I've played through the story 3 times and there are still parts of it that get my heart racing or sections of the story that still tug the ol' heartstrings.

Last thing though, they're not zombies, they're clickers a fungal virus has grown into the hosts with those far along in their infection blind but with a heightened sense of hearing and so you can sneak past some of the infected but if they hear you, they'll you!

Cheers FC. Is it more like COD missions where you just go from A to B (despite missions being tweaked here and there they're all the same) or is it more open world? Can you just walk around the city exploring?
