I truly feel that courtois would have saved that 1st goal by lavezzi in which he turned and shot. Cech almost got his fingers to it, but courtois having the longer reach, i think would have touched it over. It's all trivial anyway as cech has been great for us, and the main faults of last nights 1st and 3rd goals came from individual mistakes. The 2nd goal was through a stupid foul and bad defensive set up for the free kick.

Can't imagine anyone else in goal other than Cech. Goalies can be older than outfield players with less consequence about age. Can't miss what we never had, strikers are the number 1 priority for next season.

Yes but we already have a world class keeper out on loan, it's not as if we're looking to buy somebody to replace Cech.

That was Cech's worst ever game imo. He hasn't had the best of seasons and I don't see how anyone denies that.

Yet we have one of the best of defensive records.

Or back 4 must be insanely good.

Our back four have been exceptional. You must be insanely blind if you think Cech's having a good season by his standards.

Well that's exactly my point, that he was the understudy up to the point when Cudicini was unavailable to play, i.e. after he got injured (which happened to be in pre-season). It was only because he competed for the #1 shirt and then took the opportunity that he showed that he was good enough and better than Cudicini. What if, hypothetically, we had sold Cudicini, put Cech straight in, and he had failed to adapt and been another Taibi? What if we had sold him to Man Utd and he had turned out to be the final piece which kept them competitive during the interval before they signed van der Sar?

You are saying that Cech is in the last chance saloon if you are denying him a [last] chance to defend his place, that's my point. Cech is pretty much unquestionably the best goalkeeper in the league and we are behaving as if he's one bad back away from the scrap heap. I'm not defending him out of sentiment, it is out of my genuine conviction that Cech is still the better player and should be our starting goalkeeper until such a point that he is no longer the better player. I think that the most effective way of doing that would be to have them competing side-by-side, if only for one season, for the same position, with one of the best goalkeeping coaches in the world and one of the best managers in the world to make the decision.

No one thinks that, I don't understand why you have to take a tribal mentality to this when the solution I'm proposing gives the opportunity to both keepers, and will allow them to compete with each other directly and prove to us once and for all who is the better goalkeeper and who Chelsea will benefit from having in their starting XI. I think Courtois is a fantastic goalkeeper, I just think Cech is better, and is far too good to be immediately written off as collateral damage just for the sake of pandering to Courtois' wishes immediately. If Courtois is not patient enough or confident enough in his own ability (and from the way he talks I would have thought that he is) to compete with Cech for just one season in an entirely new league then I'd be pretty disappointed in his attitude. If he is willing to do that then obviously I take it all back and would be satisfied that we had managed to broker the best immediate solution to the problem.

Incidentally, if he needs a role model in professionalism, maybe he could benefit from spending a season in the same team as Petr Cech...

So Jose did say cech was he's number one after all.

Knee jerkers? Have you actually watched us this season? Cech flaps at things every other week. Stop living off the fact he won the Champions League, so did Meireles and he wasn't good enough either. Cech has been a great servant and terrific performer but he's not what he was. Also I'd take Courtois for 15 years, than Cech at a lower level for 5. Get the blinkers off.

This.

Yeah Cech has been superb but he is not getting any better and I think hes been in decline the past few years.

He's a Chelsea legend but it's time we actually embrace our future and give the guys we paid good money for a chance.

Last night showed the poor side of Cech.

Has to be Courtois.  Cech is starting to look like Carlo did when he first arrived.  Not commanding his box.

The first goal last night should never have happened. Terry should have been left in no doubt that there was no danger.  Cech should have come and collected it.  Second goal was more difficult because it was a good ball in, but Cech didn't know whether to stick or twist.  The third was very poor. Of course Pastore shouldn't have got that far, but you can't let the ball in at the near post.  You just can't.

If you add on to that the fact that they looked like scoring from every corner and Petr flapped about like a hyperactive chicken then questions have to be asked.

So Jose did say cech was he's number one after all.

Looks like Cech did start the season as his number one, but Mourinho still didn't sell Cudicini.

Cech put in the worst performance of his season last night, but he was far from alone in having a mare, even the usually-solid defence were poor. I think it says a lot about our current morale that our most dependable players were f**king up: Terry, Cech, Ivanovic in the first half, Azpilicueta (to a lesser extent) towards the end. Total team f**kup I'm afraid, regardless of the poor timing of my argument. This changes nothing, our best bet is still to have the two compete for the shirt.

Just posted something similar on the match thread. Cech now seems to just avoid coming for any inswinging dead ball, which causes chaos.

The 3rd goal was horrific, and reminded me of Turnbull, and its not the first time we've seen Cech slow to get down at the near post.

No knee jerking from me though. Big fan of Cech and think we all take him for granted, but he hasnt had the most commanding of seasons when he really needed to really. Fascinating to see how this one will play out. If he goes or drops to the bench it will hurt, but there isnt any room for sentiment, and Jose will do whats best.

Unfortunately he does come for the inswinging balls but will miss 1 in 2. He done it last night and got away with it a couple of times.

Who said anything about Jose selling Carlo? You should read what I post instead of trying to say thinks that I haven't even mentioned. I'm not even talking about lastnight. If you want to challenge what I say get your facts right first and actually challenge what I say not what you think I said.

Is your solution to this problem not to keep Courtois and let Cech leave?

Bring back Courtois and then see who does best in pre season then go with that

Trouble with that is the opposition we play in pre season isn't really going to give them a test.

I think letting courtois leave would be an even bigger mistake than anything we have done in the past. Best young keeper in the world at our disposal and we sell him without him playing a minute for us. I see him every week and he is already at least on cech's level and he's only 21. We know jose isn't afraid of big decisions and this is a big decision that needs to be made.

Yeah if we let him go it will haunt us for years tbh.

I think jose has got to do what he done in his 1st year here play them off as he did with carlo and chech. I think we need to have a good look at courtois in pre season and make a decision.

Build for the future, make a team that will compete for many years. That is what Jose said he is wanting to do correct?

Time to say goodbye to Cech, Lamps and JT. Not to move on, but to say goodbye as week in and week out starters, as spines of the team.

Courtios for me.

What was once Cech, JT, Cole, Ricky, Ballack, Maka, Lamps and Drogba can become Courtios, Cahill, Azpi, Matic, Hazard, with a few others to form the new spine.

I do not see that as turning on players that have won us many pieces of silverware, just like Dider moving on was not us turning on him, nor was Zola moving on us turning on him. It is just coming to that time.

Cech is still good enough, but I guess the future is what takes priority now. Hopefully Cech gets a transfer to one of the European giants ( For a good 15-20 million or so). He has, after all, won pretty much everything there is to be won at Chelsea. A new adventure awaits you Petr!

Interesting reading in the Evening Standard tonight. Apparently we are on the verge of giving him a 5 year contract next season , just dithering on whether to double Courtois' wages or not.

Torres' agent claims that Mou is unhappy with Cech at the moment, and that he has told the board he wants Courtois to replace Cech next season.

Exciting times, having Courtois compete with big Pete for the No 1 jersey.

Now that sounds like someone who is in the know about goalkeeper selection
