Hilario and Turnbull's contracts have expired and no news on them being offered further extensions, anybody thinking Courtois will now head back from Athletico and be playing next season at the Bridge?.. I know he's reported as being concerned about getting enough first team football prior to the world cup (Daily Fail) but, surely it's time for him to return and start the process of taking over from Cech.

It could be 5 years before the process of replacing Cech could even be considered.

It's such a tough choice but at this moment in time i don't see any reason for cech to be dropped he has been outstanding for the past two seasons and really regained the form of his early years here after a couple of years playing at not quite his best.

 

If courtois does go back to Atletico madrid, Mark schwarzer has just left fulham and would cost us nothing as his contract has expired, his 40 years of age, but still a top premiership keeper, he would make a great stop gap for a year.

To be fair Cudicini had top years in him and Jose just replaced him with Pete.

Both are used to be playing every match of the season so a 50-50 split or similar is not in cards I would reckon. TC should stay for another season at Atletico.

For that we just need a competent back up keeper who can do a job in the 5-10 games a season he's needed. Cech has started 50+ games a season for the last three years.

A lot of the big clubs are looking to replace their keepers Cech is a very saleable player and we would get far more than we paid for him .At some stage we will have to bring in a relacement so is it now the time?

Or we keep courtouis, sell a great servant to the club in Cech and watch him go be number 1 for any top european club. Also stupid

As much as we all love Cech and how amazing he's been for the club, I kind of agree. At least from footballing and financial perspectives.

 

We have on our hands a 21 year old who is already comparable to Cech and within a year or two I believe will be better. Financially all the top clubs would want either goalkeeper and we could get anywhere from £20m to £30m depending on which one we sell and which clubs are interested. The footballing downside is whether Courtois can handle the extra physical pressure he'll face in the Premiership. He's a lot better than De Gea at this there's no doubt, and at his ridiculous height he shouldn't have too much issue, but it may take a season for him to get used to that.

 

It's a tough decision and as Stim says above, we will probably end up with people moaning whichever way we go about it. Not to mention how difficult it is to let someone like Cech go from an emotional perspective. It's a tough decision, but personally I think it's one we have to make and we have to let Courtois take over from Cech, not this season, but in a year's time. Cech will no doubt end up at Barcelona/Arsenal/PSG/Monaco or whoever else and will have a good few years in him, but Courtois will have more and I believe that he'll be the better goalkeeper in that time.

He wants regular first team football especially with the World Cup next summer.

 

He's going to be on loan again next season, probably with Athletico Madrid again, then next summer I would assume the club will make a decision about him and Cech.

 

Who knows, with a few good World Cup performances under his belt his value might rocket. So if we keep him or sell him after that it's win, win for us. 

I think courtois needs one more season on loan, then bring him back and give him 20 odd games. if at that point he deserves to be number 1, then he gets the shirt. cech will be 33 and can either stay and fight for his place, or get one last big payday somewhere.

Courtois is holding a press conference this weekend , after the Serbia game.

Another season on loan would be best, but we will have to make a decision on his future after next season in my opinion. Mark Schwarzer is now a free agent and could be good for backup for this season thats if he is willing to sit on the bench.

I was thinking the same myself, this shot was in Courtois's side of the goal it wasn't right in the corner and should have been a routine save.

He tried to predict which side the player was going and moved too early. It's really, really hard to change direction quickly enough. It's a poor decision to move early, but most goalkeepers do it.
