Patrick Bamford - should he get a chance?

Featured Replies

He plays well on the RW, and being left footed there's the added danger of him taking shots at goal. Willian isn't left footed, and isn't really a RW, and Cuadrado is unproven at the moment and not a left footer, so Bamford would be ideal back up for the RW unless of course we bought Bale lol. I don't see why bamford playing there would be a big deal either, as kane plays occasionally on the LW for spurs and has been effective there, and he also doesn't have blistering pace or great dribbling skills.

Not start with him as first choice, no, but he could easily be backup, he can also play on either wing which he has done well for Boro, which adds to his value as Jose often likes to put attackers out there when we are chasing games.

I suppose those are options, but do we feel that Patrick would want to come back and play a lesser role? Or, do we think he'd get much time on the wing as opposed to going with the likes of Willian/Cuadrado?

I expect to see him as our 3rd choice striker next season after Costa and Remy. Would really suck if Jose goes and buys another unnecessary striker for no reason when we have a ton of loanees to pick from

Chelsea have opened talks with Patrick Bamford over an improved contract following his stunning loan spell at Middlesbrough.

Bamford, 21, scored one and made one in Boro’s 2-1 victory over play-off rivals Wolves on Tuesday evening.

The Chelsea youngster is on loan at Middlesbrough for the season and has scored 17 goals in their push for promotion from the SkyBet Championship.

Bamford, who began his career with Nottingham Forest, currently earns £7,500 a week, but Chelsea will significantly improve on that as part of his new package.

He has just over a year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are keen to tie him down to a new contract.

Bamford has impressed the Chelsea hierarchy during loan spells at MK Dons, Derby and current side Middlesbrough.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka will be hoping Bamford can inspire his side to promotion during the final three games of the Championship campaign.

The Riverside Stadium outfit take on promotion rivals Norwich on Friday evening before facing Fulham and Brighton.

If this was Chelsea 1982 he would be straight in wearing the No. 9 as he does remind me a little of Kerry Dixon.

Alas for him, it is 2015 so his chances are slim to say the least but I do hope we see him get a chance - and a PROPER chance - not sitting on the bench and getting 15 minutes in the Capital One Cup.

Ahhh, Kerry Dixon! Memories ahhh.

What a soldier.

Seems like the sort of player who would run through a brick wall for a manager who understands him.

Will he get a shot with us? Nope. Expecting him to go on and become a star at Manchester City.

Of the clubs he's been linked to

Southampton, Aston Villa, Newcastle.

The barcodes are the ones I would least like him to join because the club is too disjointed and I think the disruptive environment and inevitable managerial change would disrupt Bamford's development.

Plus, being as he's just finishing a loan spell with Boro you'd think he'd want to avoid moving to another north east club out of respect for the team that's served him so well.

Doubly so considering there's an outside chance they might get relegated. On the other hand Newcastle seem to have half their squad out injured as more or less a running theme, so he would be pretty much guaranteed game time. But yes, they're a complete mess, ideally I wouldn't want any of our players within ten miles of them.

At Southampton I'd be a bit concerned about him having to come from behind Pellè and Long in the pecking order. If he's going to be third choice we may as well keep him here. They comfortably have the most quality out of all the options though.

Villa on the other hand could be excellent. I'm not sure Tim Sherwood is necessarily the manager I'd want him learning from, but he is not afraid to blood youth, and as we know is no stranger to the 4-4-2; Bamford and Benteke could form a lethal partnership.

Southampton for me. I think the style of football they play is the closest to our's and that's what we need him to get used to, plus they have a good track record of bringing through young English talent and I don't see that changing.

Oh and of the three clubs Koeman is the only one who isn't either woefully inept or nothing more than a glorified cheerleader.

Southampton play with a lone striker and Pelle works well for them as a target man. I'm not sure I want Bamford to be playing out wide but even that is not certain with the likes of Long, Mane and Rodriguez.

Villa do play with 2 strikers but Benteke and Agbonlahor are pretty much nailed on starters.

Boro would be ideal for me but if they are not promoted, I hope there are more clubs interested than the three linked.

I agree with all of that, Koeman is the best manager out of himself, Carver and Sherwood by an enormous margin, although I suppose there is no telling who will be in charge of Newcastle next season, or if they'll even be in the Premier League for that matter. Apparently McClaren is the odds-on favourite (those odds will only become shorter if Derby bottle the play-offs); I can't imagine that prospect would go down any better with Boro fans than Bamford going there would.

My main (only) concern with Southampton would be a potential lack of game time. He would likely go there as their third-choice striker, behind Pellè (who has missed two games this season) and Long (although they do use Long as a wide man as well). They are both decent players, although both are fairly patchy with their goalscoring form. I suppose if Southampton continue to use a three-man forward line, Bamford could also be used as the rightmost of the three.

I suppose the result of the FA Cup Final might play a part in the decision. If Arsenal win, Southampton will qualify for the Europa League. Not only does that mean Bamford would get to play European football, but it would also mean they have to play a whole load of extra fixtures in which they could give their non-first choice players some game time. If Villa win it and qualify for Europe, those advantages would transfer to them, which might make the prospect of Bamford going to Villa Park quite a bit more attractive.

Good news (if true)
But not suprising as he has done extremely well this season in the championship, and was unlikely to be sold before we had a chance to see how he does in the top flight imo.
