Is Mourinho in charge of the transfers?

Featured Replies

A lot of clubs are using a Director of Football nowadays to sanction transfers. It's a flawed system in my opinion.

Has Mourinho actually chosen Willian / Schurrle / Van Ginkel? Was Guarin chosen by Mourinho or is this another signing who is going to be bought and not see the first team reguarly because Mourinho doesn't rate him?

Any trusted source on what's going behind these transfers would be appreciated.

I think we'd all like to know that. I don't think he has full control, I don't know if many managers have true control anymore.

I hope a journalist asks him.

I really don't think he does. Willian was never a Mourinho signing, that has Abramovich written all over it. Schurrle is the same but he was coming in before Mourinho so i have no problem with that. Van Ginkel, again i think it is an Abramovich signing.

Guarin i don't know much about him but from what i have heard he is another box to box midfielder like Ramires, i can't see why Mourinho would want that, so again i think if he comes in that will be another Abramovich signing.

It's getting stupid now, we are just bringing in players because we can, there is no thought for what this does to the team. Last season we were complaining because we needed a few more players, now we seem over stocked with players that are either not good enough or are not needed. The balance of the squad is a mess right now.

I can only see things continuing.

Emenalo seems to have the most responsibility and i think he's done a good job despite the criticism he gets on here, i'm pleased with his signings.Im sure Mourinho has a say Guarin to me looks more like his signing, but im pretty convinced he doesn't have full control but like i say im sure his opinion is listened to like the signing of Eto'o was.

I dont he buoght Willian but i think he likes him now, seems to play him alot more and loves his work rate.

I don't think there's a single manager in world football who independently picks which players to purchase. Pretty much every club has an influential Technical Director/owner who gives his own input on potential transfer targets. Chelsea are pretty much the archetypal example of this model.

What's clear is that Mourinho needs more of his type of player to make it work. The Board have invested enough into the 'Barca in Blue' type, we need more steel, stature and technical ability in midfield, at centre back and upfront as well.

Why wouldn't Willian and Schurrle be Mourinho signings? They're both fast and creative but also incredibly hard working and commited. They sound like exactly the kind of players Mourinho loves.

Nobody knows this for sure, but its a lot easier to critisize Roman then it is someone like Mourinho, if we were running away with the league I have no doubt everyone would claim Mourinho was in full control over transfers and what a good job hes done.

I'm sure mourinho has made targets known to the board, maybe not even specific names but he will have made clear what he wants. Its up to the board to find availables.

I would really hope so.

The trouble is these days that a manager is at a club for such a short period of time. Can any club afford to go all out on certain players that are held in high regard by the manager, bypassing others who are better/cheaper but not favoured by the current manager?

That's not the way things should be but it seems like that's the way they are.

I'm not saying he wouldn't buy them but we have been after both since long before Mourinho arrived, i can't see why he would target the exact players the club wanted before his arrival. If any other manager was in charge right now we would still have Schurrle and Willian here because that is what the club wanted, not necessarily what the manager wanted.

True. I'd imagine they ran both by him before they signed though.

Avram Grant recently said that if a Chelsea manager wants a player, Abramovich tries as best he can to get that player for the manager. In that interview Ray Wilkins was there too, and he backed up what Grant said.

Didn't Wilkins say repeatedly that Torres was Ancelotti's  preferred signing?

Surely he wasn't being honest about that. I won't believe for one second that Torres wasn't Roman's buy, regardless of what Wilkins or anybody else says. It's clear as day.

Roman brings in players he likes (Shev) and tries to support his managers with their picks as well. AVB wanted Mata, he got Mata.

Yeah I'd agree with that. I was referring to Torres' signing in particular.
