Filipe Luis to Chelsea... and Back Again.

Marcelo is the best. He is dynamite like cole at his best but stronger. Cole is still good but is not the future.

It's funny left back was a problem area for years before cole anyone remember del horno.

Personally I don't think Jose is that good a scout. Ranieri was the better talent identifier.

Not sure who else is out there. Normally Italy is a good place to go for a left back.

I thought right back was the problem we suffered with more, even 2 hen del horn was here, we still had gallas and bridge, and before that it was babayaro and Le saux, who were okay at the time.

There's been loads of right backs though, Ferrer, Ferreira, boularouz, Johnson, bosingwa, Ivanovic, and even essien and diarra played there a bit.

@dimarzio Chelsea pursuing Filipe Luis, Atletico identifies Siqueira as a potential replacement. While Inter…

Atletico Madrid is trying to keep Filipe Luis, but Chelsea is seriously considering paying his exit clause set at 26 million euro. Atletico Madrid has identified Guilherme Siqueira as a potential replacement but he is also being pursued by Inter. Benfica won’t exercise the option to redeem Siqueira from Granada and Atletico Madrid could acquire him for 10-12 million, but Inter is also monitoring the situation.

Rumours about F.Luis wanting to join Chelsea now and rejecting A.Madrid.

I would be happy with F.Luis £19m-£20m + Costa £32m. That's not far of what we got for Luiz, if his rumoured transfer fee was £50m, or £40m with addons lateron. We still have money to get a worldclass CM after this without worrying about FFP and we still got more players to sell/release.

I've seen Filipe Luis only a handful of times and I must say, he was impressive. However, I don't see the point in spending £21m (if the exit clause mentioned is real) on a player who'll turn 29 before his CFC debut when we can add a few mil and get Shaw, who's ten years younger, talented,English and a CFC fan.

I can understand Mourinho wanting the experienced and better player next year, considering how close the top 4 race was last season and knowing Manchester United will invest alot to get back in it. It would cost alot more then £19m-£20m to loose out on CL for a year.

I don't think signing or not signing a new left back would make that much of a difference in whether we're able to finish in the top 4 next season. Azpi was arguably the league's best LB this season, and Ivanovic is solid on the right. I'm not against buying a quality fullback, but getting a top class striker or two would be much more of a factor in how well we fare in 2014/15.

As I said, I like Luis, but with the financial constraints we now have to face, spending a huge fee on a near 30 year old with no resale value doesn't seem like a good plan to me. There are other options out there to consider - Ricardo Rodriguez (Wolfsburg) or Moreno (Sevilla).

Perhaps Jose doesn't rate Shaw, in any case, he is the one who makes the call.

I wouldn't mind Rodriguez for that money. Only 21, highly rated, takes set-peices as well. Disappointing news on PvA btw, been cut from the Holland squad. No Van Ginkel as well. Got no reason whatsoever to want Holland to do well now. Apologies Dutch Chelsea fans, but Holland can CRASH AND BURN!

It probably wouldn't make much of a diffrence with a new left back, if we were to play like we did at the end of last season. I'm hoping Mourinho wants to make a more dynamic team then that though, one that also can handle beeing in possesion of the ball. Having a player like F.Luis on the left and Azpilicueta in his natural position on the right, will give us width and will help our attacking midfielders/strikers to not get isolated.

Moreno at 1.71 m would be eaten alive in PL as a defender, I don't see him as an option.

Here is a good article about F.Luis and any FFP concerns you might have:

Spending £20 million on a LB who is about to turn 29 is silly in my opinion. He would need time to adjust to England and by then it may be too late because of his age.

Shaw is 10 years younger, has played 2 very good Premier League seasons, English, a Chelsea fan and he is getting better and better.

I can't see why spending £20 million on a 29 year old LB is better than spending £27-£30 million on an 18 year old LB.

Maybe Shaw doesn't want to join us?

Maybe Shaw's wage demands are ridiculous?

Maybe Jose doesn't want him?

Mourinho wants Luis Emenalo and the other people at the club most likely want Shaw thats the where i see it. If Shaw was cheaper i reckon we would be much more interested.

Luis doesn't need to adjust to England, he's an experienced player. And this whole "adjusting" thing is overblown.

Shaw might turn out to be a great defender but  £30 million plus 100k/week is a big gamble for a player who just completed his first full professional season. A player who has not played one game in the Champions League. With Luis on the other, you know what you are getting. I wouldn't be surprised if Shaw, and not Barkley,  Mourinho was talking about when he said this:

"I like a young player, a young English player. The market is closed but I asked a question to position myself to see where he was."

"We are speaking about a very young player but his price was like he has 50 caps when he had none."

"The price for English players is very high, the market is very difficult."

Still rather we spent £30M on Shaw than £20 Mill for Luis.

£30m for Shaw IMO is absolutely unbelievably ridiculous. He is so overrated, purely because he is English. Yes, he did well last season, but 30 MILLION POUNDS...

I really like Luis, but that price is very steep too. My choice would be Ricardo Rodriguez. He's just has a phenomenal season with Wolfsburg and he's only 21, not to mention he would cost a lot less than Shaw. Moreno of Sevilla has also been mentioned although I haven't seen much of him so can't really comment.

Again, in my opinion, I don't think many of us would even know who Luke Shaw was if he wasn't English.

Also, I don't think there is a left back on the planet that we could sign that would do a better job than Azpi. (Maybe apart from Alaba)

Still rather we spent £30M on Shaw than £20 Mill for Luis.

Me too. But Luis seems like a safer option in terms of guaranteed performances. Is that his exact buyout clause by the way?

Filipe Luis could cost Chelsea €45.5m

Chelsea could be forced to fork out as much as €45.5 million (£37m) for Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis due to a complication in the Spanish tax system.
