Filipe Luis to Chelsea... and Back Again.

Missed a trick then with Moreno.

Less money and a better left back than Luis

I have to disagree. Signing Shaw for 30 odd million is a massive risk. If it doesnt work out no one will buy him off us for anywhere near what we paid for him. Take Torres for example. Infact Torres was proven before we bought him.

Well thats your prerogative

Moreno isn't a better left back. He might have more potential but he isn't now. Luis was an integral part of one of the best defences in Europe.

In your opinion yes, however I rate him higher than Luis.

Moreno is also just 1.71 m, wich will be exploited. Last season teams would pair a strong header with Azpilicueta (1.78 m) and hope for something  to happen, wich at times it did. Filipe Luis at 1.82 m won't be so easily beaten.

Whatever happened to the £8m that Ath Madrid owe us for playing Courtis in the CL? I know Uefa stepped in but AM came out and said they would "honour tje contract we signed". Surely they should just knock it off the price which would bring it down to £12m-ish

I think not standing in our way over signing Costa and Luis might be their way of honouring the agreement.

Nah they can't anyway because of his release clause. Despite that, if they "honoured their agreement", they would have to pay us £8m or take it off any transfer fee.

If that is the case, £12m isn't too bad for a VERY good left back.

Just can't get excited about this... Shaw (maybe Rodriguez) or no one would have been my choice.

I feel ya. Wish we were rumored to be signing Rodriguez...hopefully JM is getting some scouting on lb during the WC

Flipe Luis is one of the best LBs in the world, his age isn't ideal but he still has another 3-4 seasons in him easily. I would prefer Shaw but i would still be very happy with Flipe Luis

When people hit 27 or so looks like people on here are ready to throw them on the scrap heap. He's not even 29 yet, he's one of if not the best LB in the world, JT is 4 and a half years older than him and just had one of his best ever seasons. Is 4-5 years not long enough to justify someones purchase anymore?

In a world with no Shaw, Rodriguez, Bertrand, PvA, most will probably be happy with it. Problem is, this isn't that world.

Turning 29 in August

Stats:

51 Appearances

1 Goal

3 Assists

Hardly impressive.

Oh well, I guess we're going to have to warm to Filipe Luis, so here's a video to get everyone feeling all optimistic and upbeat.

(Needs to lose the ridiculous woman's hair do for a start).

For the record I wanted us to have Ash and Bertrand as our LB options next season, I don't think we needed to buy anyone.

But if we are going to buy someone, I don't want it to be an absolute fortune on a decent 17 year old instead of a cheaper option who is in their prime and will in all likelihood be one of the best LB's in the world for the next 4-5 years.

^ He is Brazilian you know and they are notorious for peaking early (Kaka, Robinho, Ronaldo, Deco, Elano the list is endless), we also have no idea how he will adapt to a new league. I don't think he addresses the lack of width as he is not effective attacking wise (maybe a reason why Scolari opted for Maxwell & Marcelo), and you could argue Hazard would have had a more productive season if he had a fullback giving him options which is no fault of Azpi. Essentially Filipe is a left footed Ivanovic.

None of those players you mentioned are defenders.

Unlike Lucio who won the Champions League with Inter when he was 34.

Roberto Carlos who played for Real Madrid until he was 34.

Cafu playing for AC Milan until he was 38, winning the CL with them when he was 37.

Aldair playing for Roma until he was 38.

Or more recently, Thiago Silva didn't get his first Brazil cap until he was 24, a bit older than your Luke Shaw's and Chris Smalling's.

^ Agree with your point; though these players remained at the club they were comfortable at and did not move clubs. I'd rather go for Baines at the same price, age, HG, used to the league and offers something offensively.

It's all paper talk at the moment but would be massively disappointed if we used the £50m for the trio of Costa, Luis & Tiago. I would only take Koke & maybe Costa.
