Following Our Nearest and Dearest Rivals, 2014-15

Featured Replies

So, all English sides out of Europe already, pretty embarrassing really.

I just did a bit of calculating and with the way Italian sides are doing in Europe this season, they will be right on our ass's next season. English sides, must do better than Italy next season or i'm pretty sure we will lose a Champions League spot.

Anyone know the CL draw?

Paris St-Germain v Barcelona

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid

Porto v Bayern Munich

Juventus v Monaco

Those ties will take place on 14/15 April and 21/22 April.

f**king hell, just seen the draw - that is delicious!

Real vs Atletico, just what I was hoping for. I will be supporting Atletico in that one and hope they pull it off.

We would have got Barca if we'd gone through - that sucks for us.

Porto vs bayern will be interesting as porto looking solid this year; they are genuine dark horses.

Juve getting easy draw again.

I am buzzing to see those games, especially the former two games.

I don't think that is going to be the case, we are still ahead of Germany (who only have Bayern and Wolfsburg left themselves) in the rankings, and are some distance ahead of Italy.

The top three ranked national football associations get four Champions League spots, and the coefficient is calculated based on the performances of the previous five seasons. This season is the first time Italian sides have outperformed us in Europe in those five years, there is really no risk of us losing that extra spot any time soon.

I reckon Bayern and Juve are shoe ins to get through those ties.

Barca 'should' be too much for PSG.

Madrid derby is game of the draw obviously, lose that and Carlo can wave goodbye to his Madrid time.

Gut feeling right now I would say it's going to be Barca, Real Madrid, B.Munich and Juventus who get through.

Also the coefficient at the end of the season (2014/15) will indicate the number of places allocated to each country for the season after next (2016/17) rather than next season (2015/16).

Barca, Bayern and Juventus all seem like fairly straightforward calls, they are clearly superior to their opposition. Obviously surprises can happen but you would expect all three of those sides to progressfairly comfortably.

I do wonder how the Madrid derby will go though, neither of them are in particularly good form and Atletico have had the hex over Real this season: they've played each other six times already in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa, with Atletico winning four (including a 4-0 win in the league) and two draws. Someone or other compared the Barca-Real-Atletico trinity of this season as a kind of rock-paper-scissors game: Barca seem to consistently beat Atletico, Atletico consistently beat Real, and Real (although they've only played once but will meet this weekend) have beaten Barca. Either way it should be thrilling.

looking forward to messi terrorizing sideshow bob :D

need to mention that juve's pogba injured for two months. i think it will be a tight game between juve and monaco.

Apart from Porto vs Bayern, those are some really excellent ties.

PSG vs Barca should be another great tie and I hope Messi makes David Luiz cry again. Plus Zlatan going back to the Camp Nou in the second leg to once again look average on the big stage.

Atletico vs Real is the tie of the round. Hopefully Bale has a sh*t game so he leaves in the summer. Could be a play-off between the two candidates for the Man City job, although if Atletico win then I could see Carlo being shown the door sooner rather than later.

Juventus vs Monaco....who cares? Not even a certain Frenchman in the Juve team to watch.

If we'd have gotten Barca in this round though....great tie, nice bit of recent history but they're on another level to us at the moment and it would've had to have been a repeat of 2012, although I expect they would've gotten revenge. We'll have them next year.

That is incorrect. We *may* have got them if we had gone through, just like we may have got any other team left in the draw at that time. You are suffering from 'commentators lack of understanding of the chaos theory' syndrome :)

I have my own theory that the chances of Chelsea drawing Barcelona tends towards 100%.

You guys have an unhealthy dislike for luiz.

In your opinion. I dislike Liverpool, Benitez, Luiz and a few other football-related things but none of them are unhealthy.

Shame they didn't draw Bayern though - I imagine the sight of Muller, Lahm, Neuer, Boateng et al would have had him curled up in the foetal position before the game kicked off.

Somehow I don't see David Luiz being scared of any opposition. That is sort of the good and bad thing about him.

As for facing Messi, he would be wise to leave that to Thiago Silva, who is one of the few defenders I have seen that has been able to contain Messi.

I think Porto's inexperienced defence will probably cost them the game, the fullbacks are superb but I don't trust center backs like Maicon to hold out against the likes of Bayern.

Paul Scholes seems to be the most miserable git in the world. Now he's criticised Joe Hart for smiling and getting pumped up after some of his saves against Barca.

Everyone doesn't have to be as grumpy as you Scholes.

I'm in minority that I want PSG to win then? Really wouldn't begrudge them winning the whole thing, at least then we can say we went out to the winners and it would be someone different.

I still think it's going to be a Barca vs Bayern final though.

I'd rather Barca or Juve won it over them tbh.

I can't stand PSG

I'll back whoever knocks out Barcelona, would hate to seem them win it.

Glad Juve got a good draw, of all the teams left in they're probably who i'm rooting for, along with Atletico.

Juve plays my kind of football and have some really fantastic players, would be great to see them hopefully revive interest in Italian football too.
