Wenger

Putting aside the facts that we hate him, enjoy laughing at him and think he's abit well delusional often do you think Wenger's time to retire has come? Would he have been best off riding off into the sunset with the FA Cup? Of course we all want him to stay, afterall his record against us even without Mourinho is terrible.

I only ask this because 4 months after that first trophy in 9 years since they last won anything (coincidently the same trophy) a hell of a lot of Arsenal fans are calling for him to go. But would it be a grass isn't always greener scenario? Whilst the man has a torrid record in the big games he does consistently get them Top 4/Champions League football. Something Liverpool have fought to get back for years and something United fans are praying happens this year. Infact United is a decent comparison in many ways, their most succesful manager leaves and for the first time in a hell of a long time they fail to get into the CLs. Arsenal fans could find their team in the same boat.

In some ways I always felt Wenger covers for the board but now I'm not so sure. He finally has money to spend but continues to spend it in the wrong areas. Is this Pride? Delusion? Maybe he's not the one signing these players? Who knows?

But with all this in mind do you think Arsenal should they sack him?

Always had a begrudging respect for the man. He's really established himself as one of the best premier league managers ever and most seasons he's done it on a smallish budget. I can also appreciate how he develops young talent into stars like our Nasri and your fabregas. Don't like him but respect.

I wouldn't call Nasri a star, he's had one good season at Arsenal and at City he has been nothing special really. Fabregas would have turned into a great player whoever he was managed by. His ability to bring in young players and make them great is a myth, barely any of them go on to be world class. Arsenal have never had a small budget either, they have just refused to spend it, or when they do spend it they have spent it on youth or players who are just below the level of ability needed to compete for the title.

After Sunday he won't even be able to claim moral high ground anymore, the post match comment just showed what a pathetic sore loser he was. Not Chelsea's financial fault Wenger didn't sign defenders, or he signed Welbeck for that matter.

Wenger's "budget" has been both largely self-imposed and also exaggerated.

In the last decade it has been very apparent that his refusal to spend is not some half-baked financial ideology but his own unwillingness to take risks and be held accountable. He has worked tirelessly to suppress expectations around Arsenal, who are now a big-budget team with small-time goals. His personal shirking of challenges has finally rubbed off on his team and the result is the disgusting culture of meek surrender that infects the club from top to bottom.

I don't want him to retire, better the devil you know.

Arsenal have billionaires on their board. Someone could come in, spend a bit of money and turn them into champs within a season or two.

Yes.

(provided the club are sitting pretty financially, stadium paid off and plenty of money to spend).

In Wenger's defense, at least he seems like a reasonably intelligent person who takes notice of the world outside of football. Compared to someone like Sam Allerdyce he is sophistication personified.

Isn't that Deirdre from Coronation Street?.

Personally I’d let him go.

They have stood by him for a long time now while he’s came back year after year empty handed, he has now started spending big sums of money and nothing is really changing. If they fail to win anything this season and fail to gain or maybe even just scrape a top 4 they should say enough is enough.

I’d be pulling out all the stops to get Klopp who would be the ideal replacement for Wenger IMO, he like his teams to play attractive quick football and he would slot in there like a glove. They could also go for a more disciplined and fiery character in Simeone who’s stock is sky high after last season…not sure he’d fit the type of player they currently have though but again would be a marked improvement on Wenger.

I'd let him go for sure. Interesting comparission you make with united and I do feel that their situation has probably given Wenger a couple more years in his job. However I do see a massive difference with arsenal now and when ferguson left united.

When ferguson retired their team was a shambles, got a title win with one of the worst squads ive known to do it, no one really gave a challenge and RVP was sensational, it was clear a new manager needed pretty much a whole new first team squad. As for wengers arsenal, they are in pretty good shape, they have good players all over the pitch apart from a few key areas and any other manager would have seen they needed a cm/cdm a world class striker and some extra defensive cover. They now seem to have the money to compete in the market but the only thing holding them back seems to be Wenger, if he went out and bought Falcao (loaned) and Khedhria they could be title contenders IMO.

Finally I don't think there are any other managers that would get the arsenal job that would be so tactically inept against big teams, we see it year after year in the prem and in the CL, they come up against big teams and never look like winning. It's ok to play passing football if you have a team capable of getting results with it but sometimes Wenger needs to realise his team are second best, they are not Barcelona and tha a change of tactics doesn't represent a weakness it represents strength

His own players stating in so many words that Wenger lost control when he pushed Mourinho is a strong indication that Wenger is losing control of the dressing room, and that some of the Arsenal players at least, may well have had enough of him.

Laurent Koscielny in the Standard:

The facts are that after Cahill’s tackle, I think the coach was a little upset because three days before Alexis Sánchez received the same tackle against Galatasaray. The player only got a yellow card.

It’s true, he [Wenger] flew out of control.”

Thing is he has spent around £85-90 million in 2 seasons and doesnt have them any closer to the bigger teams than he did before then.

Ozil looks like he'd rather be anywhere else.

Sanchez is quality but he loos as if he now knows he's in a team full of average players and not his star studed Barca.

He would never have lasted anywhere near a long at any other top club with no trophies, The only reason they have tolerated him is he has kept them in 4th and kept money coming in. He had a socialist wage structure which plainly didn't work, and has cluing to one style of football that again has not worked. Jose is also so far under his skin its hilarious to watch, completely lost it on sunday and had no answer tactically.

To be honest, the board don't care. They get to see the balance sheets full while lying to the dopey-eyed Arsenal faithful about ambition.

If I were on that board i'd be gunning for his sacking, no hesitation. Stability for the sake of stability is just another  symptom of a gutless culture that appears to run from board director to tea lady (I heard her scones are organic and gluten-free)
