Don't really like the bloke and he probably epitomises a lot of what people dislike about modern footballers, but offering a 30 year old a four year contract was awful by the club (Hutchinson apparently). He knew he wouldn't get that type of deal anywhere else so he just spent four years collecting cheques.

What was worse is we had Emerson thome at the time and he was good..rumour has it he got into a scrap with jimmy floyd hasselbaink so he was sold to sheff wed and we signed Bogarde as his replacement...genius

Never blamed Bogarde.  If he was happy to trade off some of his playing years collecting cheques from a stupid contract, then all power to him.

 

I never minded Thome - however with Marcel, Frank and a young Terry in the mid he was never going to quite make it at the Bridge.

Very underrated...played in 3-1 win over Barca in first leg of cl quarter final in 2000...remember going nuts that night in the mhl...little did I know back then that beating Barca would become par for the course

Really like thome, probably because he was brazilian, maybe even our first ever.

Hated the fact that bogarde was happy to collect his checks while the club was struggling for money, and plunging further into debt. Yes we shouldn't have offered him the contract we did, but he said in the interview he wasn't happy to go on loan and only earn 75 percent of his wages. So 30k a week wasn't enough for him. Greedy twat.

Bogarde got paid a lot of money for doing very little.

Funny thing with Borgade is he moved back to Amsterdam in the last part of his contract. He got a cheap flight each day to go training, eat lunch and then go back!! Towards the end he was training with the youth team.

If you watch the interview, he's trying to get a coaching job but is having no luck...wonder why? What an example he'd be to young players...what would he tell them? - just sit on your arse and do fcuk all - it worked out well for me

Well - when his time finished at Chelsea he was 34 years old, so he might have been able to have given himself another year or two of first team football somewhere else if he'd taken his pay cut.

 

I really don't blame him - he was offered a ridiculous amount of money by a potential employer who he had no emotional attachment to (unlike us fans) - and he set up his retirement for himself and his family.  When you offer a guy who even before Chelsea had only played an average of 16 games per season across his career, the blame goes on the board members who made the decision to offer a 40,000 pound per week, 4 year deal to a 30 year old.

Apparently he had his home repossesed and gone bankrupt.
