Petr Cech to Arsenal

Featured Replies

Folk keep pretending to themselves that this doesn't change Arsenal to make themselves feel better about this but of course it does.

Even JT said Cech guarantees 10-12 points a season and that will make a huge difference to them.

We best not hope this bites us on the arse, it's already unbearable with the press goading us and Jose because they have got one over on us for once.

Regardless of how JT felt he was never going to say anything different though was he.

My positive slant in this is he will be 34 next season.

And this notion that all keepers play at an incredible level until they are pushing 40 is blown out of proportion.

For every Buffon there is a Casillas.

This improves Arsenal but it doesn't make them suddenly a better team than us.

im a supporter of the current league champions that won the league by a country mile. im not sorry that you feel so threatened

why should we depress ourselves to your level and be so pessimistic about every bloody thing. dont rain on my parade mate. ffs season hasn't even started - infact the transfer window isnt even bloody open and you're already sh*tting yourself and its embarrassing

if getting cech means they've eliminated a gap in quality for that one position they still have about 11 more to go - 10 being on the pitch, and 1 in the dug out - before i even feel slightly threatened. if this kind of confidence has a negative effect on you then sorry - not sorry!

Wow.

You do realise folk have different views on things don't you?

It seems you have got yourself in a wee state over someone's point of view, the internet might not be for you.

The fact he's posted that arsenal need to strengthen everyone other position to challenge us is ridiculous as well, absolute nonsense.

They did a twitter poll on who was better out of Cech and Courtois earlier this week.

Cech won convincingly as you would expect.

They are a weird bunch.

I know mate, it's like they wear their cringeworthy-ness as some kind of badge of honour. Bizarre.

What I wouldn't give to pull the deal now, you can give me all the "but he's a legend" crap you want. To see the dismay on the gooners faces thinking it's all wrapped up is well worth an unhappy GK in my opinion

Yeah, doesn't always work like that- football isn't a game of top trumps.

I think arsenal still have some way to go but they have sorted out a problem position and done it without having to make any serious dent in their summer transfer budget.

What difference does a few extra million make?

I shouldn't laugh at this but I can't help it.

Might as well make as much as possible if we are going to lose him. Rather him not leave but if he is going as agreed with the clubs then at least get every penny/pound possible. So yes a few extra million would make sense when needing to buy players ourselves. FFP?

i still think cech is better

Must say I do believe £10.9M is low.

It is not outrageously low, all things considered, but I would say realistically I saw Cech being sold for anywhere between £10-15M.... so I would certainly say that it is Arsenal who should feel like they have got the good deal. I personally don't think we would have been wrong to say £15M is the price- take it or leave it.

I can't say I agree with the way we have handled this transfer on a whole. Even if you accept that we had made an agreement with Cech that he could go to his choice of clubs, we really to appeared to have pandered to his (and in turn Arsenals) needs like I can't remember a top club doing when doing a deal with a direct rival. I would just like to have seen us make it more difficult for Arsenal and, essentially, driven a much harder bargain.

I have seen quite a few people say "what difference does a few more million make?"

I struggle to really understand the logic of that argument. You could apply that to every transfer to the end of time and pay over the odds and sell for peanuts if it makes you happy. It's a lazy and improper way to approach any business transaction and one I would feel even more ridiculous given the nature of this transfer.

Every million we get out of Arsenal is another one in our transfer kitty and one less in theirs- why would we concede at the lower end of the likely transfer fee spectrum for Cech when we are in no hurry what so ever for the deal to go through? I already feel we look like we got swatted like a fly when we suggested we wanted a player in exchange so why hurry the deal through at such an agreeable fee for Arsenal. Why not hold out for the best possible deal for Chelsea FC?

I wouldn't go as far as to say we got robbed but a players value is determined by what they are worth to the buyer and I would say you will struggle to find an Arsenal fan who doesn't think they got a bargain in Petr Cech for £10.9M.

You're right of course but what I mean when I say a few million here or there doesn't mean much in the scheme of things is the result is the same, Cech leaves, and he leaves for Arsenal. That's the upsetting thing in all of this, not the fact he might be worth a few million more. The clubs will have a fair idea of his market value, they will know more about his physical condition and so on. I'm upset that he's joining Arsenal, far more upset about that than the fee. The fee's probably realistic, and here's the thing, a realistic price is all we'll get. I've seen people demanding we hold them to ransom as other clubs have done to us, difference is, we were aggressively pursuing other clubs' players in the transfer market, their best players, of course we had to pay over the odds, of course the other clubs got a good deal, they didn't want to sell, we were prepared to go the extra mile, this applies to many, many of our signings in the past. This deal has no resemblance to those. Arsenal are not aggressively pursuing Cech, they'll wait if they have to. Cech is available, he wants to leave and the club have granted him his wish. More than likely they asked him to stay last year as a reserve with the promise he would be granted his wish this term. He's up for grabs, he has one year left, we have to be realistic with what we ask. Maybe £15m is closer to his worth and fair enough, we should hold firm, but ultimately, the fee agreed will suit both clubs. We have a player who wants to leave, who is 33, who we'd like to get a fee for before it's too late. Furthermore keepers do not traditionally command huge fees. Arsenal know he's theirs next year on a free. There's a limit to how far they'll go. It's as much in our interests to sell as it is for them to buy. Like I said, shame it's Arsenal, definitely, but in my opinion we had no choice and neither did Cech.

mmmmm.....surely you're not so obtuse to be able to recognize that what sergio meant by his choice of "superb" in the context is the  club's and more probably the owner's rather classy attitude in dealing with this - an acceptance of a decade of great service that Cech has given us & that the timing was right for him to depart. Furthermore, they have recognized that players' families are just as if not more important than football. Surely they are right in that attitude are they not & especially so as a reward to just such a player as Cech. I for one want to be associated with a club that has such an attitude when it comes to respecting such a player's choices after such marvellous service. We should be & continue to be setting our own standard in respect to these matters & evincing a standard that does us proud. If you & others can't handle that then surely that is more a reflection on you is it not? To use Luiz as your example of "superb" business is hardly apposite & only reflects the transfer amount secured. True it is that it was a phenomenal amount of money to have received - almost farcical really - but it is very unhelpful to use that as a marker in respect to Cech. Further, to say, as you do, that we should've got 20 mill or so is ridiculous & equally hyperbolic on your part.

We are Chels - we are classy - try to remember that in future.

Could not agree more with youlots comments as expressed here, and I’ve got a ’family’ viewpoint of my own to relate at the end of this post to emphasise the importance of such a stance being taken. But first I’d like to stress how extremely rare it is in football to be presented with an opportunity to pocket £11m for someone who is no longer a first team regular, let alone a 33-year-old reserve goalkeeper. We are making a profit on what was paid for Petr when he signed as a 21-year-old in 2004 and back then he was already a regular for Rennes and his national team. And if anyone still wants to make a financial issue out of this they should also remember that Edwin van der Sar was Fulham's first choice when Manchester United snapped him up aged 34 in 2005... when they only had to pay around £2 million.

The Premier League was won last season by overcoming the likes of Man City, featuring our all-time leading goalscorer and a Man United team boasting our two-time Player of the Year, not to mention [but I will] the Scousers who, quite literally, boasted endlessly of the sporadic presence of Daniel Sturridge (what good it did them) yet none of these high-profile players could prove the grass was greener away from the Bridge. Nor were they able to exert enough influence at their new homes to deny Jose’s 'chosen ones' the title. Of course, in each instance we were ridiculed, accused of getting farewells wrong, carts before horses, and the general revelry displayed by opposition supporters and Media alike soon dispelled any thoughts of Chelsea being seen in a favourable light. Maybe this time it will be a different story on all fronts. But I doubt it.

The family-related anecdote? Well, some of you will know that I’ve been blessed with two son-in-laws who support Spurs and Arsenal, the latter coming from a whole family of Gooner season ticket holders, thus ensuring that my granddaughter and 3yr-old grandson would be decked in red, almost from birth. Mercifully, son-in-law Spur has always let me exert maximum influence over his two sons, who are now aged 11yrs and 7yrs, to the extent that they have become dedicated Chelsea fans, resplendent in Hazard and Diego Costa shirts respectively. Yesterday the youngest asked his grandfather if it was true that we were selling Petr and I told him that, sadly, I thought we were going to. He sat down beside me, in sullen silence to begin with, then he started mumbling the words of the first [respectable] Chelsea chant I had taught him years ago…

Petr Cech has got his hat on
Hip, hip, hip, hooray.
Petr Cech has got his hat on
Cos without it he can’t play.

Suddenly the tears started to flow, I put an arm round him and was just attempting some consolation, by saying Petr needed first team football and he and his family wanted to stay in London, when his brother piped up in typical Peter Kay no-nonsense fashion, getting down to basics with…”So, he’s going to Arsenal then. Never mind, Sam, you know Diego wouldn’t cry and anyway they’ve still got a rubbish back four with a manager who can’t beat ours, so it wont make any difference.” All three of us smiled and felt a lot better for these home truths - amazing, isn’t it, what four years seniority over your brother, plus a pragmatic attitude, can do at times like these!

Meanwhile, the eventual response from the red half of the family is not an eagerly-anticipated one, but at least I know they will not be triumphal about the move, as there is just too much jumping-the-gunner-ing to go in this saga. Certainties are few and far between at the Emirates these days, but one thing is for sure - it has to be now or never for Arsene - there are simply no excuses left.

I'll miss the big man, but we couldn't keep him.  Got money now rather than letting him go on a free next season.  Christ, we got Cole off them, they can have our back up keeper; despite how much I dislike Arsenal.  I'd like to echo the sentiment that Chelsea have at least been very fair in all of this, so maybe when Arsenal start harping on about us being classless they'll think if that.

I think people take these transfers far too personally, and I think that this "legend" status badge being metaphorically ripped from players is a bit pathetic too.  Petr, like Frank, gave us a decade of great service and have been integral parts of the most successful period of our history.

Also, from a family angle, I notice a lot of the twitter noise-boys are folk that don't have family (that's not directed at anyone in here) so not sure they fully understand the gravity of uprooting your entire household from a city that he clearly loves and has friends in too.

I wish Petr nothing but happiness, but no success.

Someone on another forum put it really eloquently as "I wish him all the plaudits of De Gea, with the results of United"

Well said, Scott, my sentiments exactly, especially about some people taking transfers like Cech's too personally.

Gerrard loves Mourinho, could have moved to Chelsea 3 times but rejected because he loves Liverpool. That's a legend.

And now during one interview he said that he regrets not signing in and playing for Jose Mourinho!

De Gea won a pl with united

There you go I guess.

Ive said this twice already and im going to repeat myself again, we need to stop worrying about arsenal. They will never be a threat as long as wenger is in charge. Does anyone honestly think the reason they havent challenged in over 10yrs is down to their goalkeeper? I mean comeon.

Our worry like ive said before is mourinho falling out with roman because of this, because if he leaves we're well and truly f**ked.

The world's top 10 best-paid goalkeepers - including Petr Cech

Valdez... interesting.

We wouldn't be. Jose has left before, you know, and we achieved a few small things to tide us over until he returned.

Why is this taking so long to be finalised?

Is Cech still on tour with us or has he been back in London since talks began?

Because he hasn't had his medical yet- that's happening next week. I am guessing it will be officially announced by Wednesday.
