July 27, 201510 yr I honestly don't know how to feel about Di Maria... he's a world class player. But perhaps the PL wasn't his cup of coffe? He showed glimpses of his ability every now and then, but he also lost numerous balls. Sure everyone loses a ball, but he seemed to do it a lot more than everybody else. I'm quite sure he'll leave any day now... all these rumours and him not showing up points to that I'm quite sure Pedro would suit us a lot better... if we were to buy him that is? He was a world class player, but today i wouldn't consider him to be world class anymore. Dumped by Real Madrid and failed at Man U. A player with that price tag being sold after just 1 season is very strange. He's header for PSG so he'll be playing in an easy league, maybe that's what he needs. Pedro would suit us and give us something extra, but it looks like he's not coming either.
July 27, 201510 yr Let's not forget as wellthat Di Maria's home was burgled whilst he and his family were there and apparently his wife has wanted to leave the country ever since. Whatever Di Maria's reasons for leaving are, I'm really surprised at how this transfer worked out. I thought he'd take the league by storm, he has all the attributes to be a terrific PL winger.

I think this is a good point. Not dis-similar to Crespo with us IIRC
July 28, 201510 yr I'm really disappointed in Di Maria. After his first few performances, I was sure it was money well spent. He seemed to be assisting and scoring out of nothing - exactly what you want from a world class player. He would also go missing in some games too and never looked the box to box, all action MF he was for Madrid when they won the CL. Then he got an injury and his home was burgled. Ashley Young of all people then began performing very consistently, which Di Maria never had really done for us. You have to give credit to van Gaal in that he played young who was in much better form over the big name. Di Maria was consistently rubbish in the last few months - trying stupid shots from miles out instead of being clever, losing the ball a lot and finally not really improving our play. It's not only his fault, Van Gaal could perhaps have supported him better but to be honest it looks like his heart was never at United or in Manchester. I have a feeling that he would have gone to psg last summer if FFP was not an issue. Despite being a smaller club in a worse league, Manchester is not the place that Paris is (though Paris is incredibly overrated) and arguably they were a stronger team than us at that point. Overall, Di Maria has not shown the heart, bravery, determination or quality to be a United player or be one worth €60m. He also doesn't really fit out current system or van Gaal's 'philoshofee'. As great a player as he can be, it just hasn't worked out and he'll probably go down as one of the greatest PL transfer flops ever. Edited July 28, 201510 yr by Brixtac

Looking back, what's striking is how quickly it went bad. He seemed to lose his motivation in a matter of weeks.
July 28, 201510 yr Good post. Looking back, what's striking is how quickly it went bad. He seemed to lose his motivation in a matter of weeks. hey spud so Yedlin is now playing as a midfielder/winger? He does have speed to kill with & this summer w/ the US, Yedlin did create some goals. This situation w/ Yedlin might actually work for your side.
July 28, 201510 yr I love the idea of Di Maria failing miserably but he has another season to show his worth, always valuable after a sh*tty start, doesn't have anywhere near as much pressure as I would have expected, could work to his advantage.
July 28, 201510 yr Author I like the idea that Di Maria "failed" at United when he contributed directly to 14 goals last season. Wish Cuadrado would have failed like him.
July 28, 201510 yr I think there would be a sizable difference in the starts and overall game time Di Maria got compared to Cuadrado last season to be fair.
July 28, 201510 yr ....At least we didnt spend the best part of £70M on Cuadrado though, LOOO0000LL Neither did we.
July 28, 201510 yr Neither did we. when you factor in his wages etc its probably more! Real would of taken all that money by now too! All said and done utd will re coup about 30m max by next summer at best :p flop of the PL era, get it up you utd! heh heh Edited July 28, 201510 yr by Bigthrobberus

All said and done utd will re coup about 30m max by next summer at best :p flop of the PL era, get it up you utd! heh heh I've got to say, despite that goal vs Barca, he's got very little to nothing on Torres in that department....especially when you consider the managers Torres got to work under here and the non-stop chances/efforts to bring him back to his best. I don't enjoy saying it but that's where my head is at on the topic.
July 28, 201510 yr I'm sorry but Torres is the biggest transfer flop of the PL era and no one comes close. I don't see any real debate here at all.
July 28, 201510 yr The only thing that is on Torres favour is we won the FA cup, CL and Euorpa when he was here. Doubt you will see a bigger waste of £50 million though
July 29, 201510 yr Liverpool have collectively on a few players in the last few years wasted far more than that. But in terms of 1 single flop, I don't think Torres will be bettered for many years, possibly ever.
July 29, 201510 yr I have to agree on Torres, he is the benchmark for flops, the flop of all flops, the flops flop... although it was mitigated somewhat because Liverpool sp*nked £38 mill of the Torres money on Andy Carroll.
July 29, 201510 yr Nando is definitely top of the flops. The good news is Roman will probably never back his judgement again.
July 29, 201510 yr I like the idea that Di Maria "failed" at United when he contributed directly to 14 goals last season. Wish Cuadrado would have failed like him. Cuadrado played barely any games compared to Di Maria, joined in January, didn't have to be relied on like Di Maria, also uhmm the price might spring to mind?

July 29, 201510 yr Author Cuadrado played barely any games compared to Di Maria, joined in January, didn't have to be relied on like Di Maria, also uhmm the price might spring to mind? Yeah cause the best part of £30m for a winger deemed not good enough to start any games is pocket change. Di Maria was one of the best players in the league for the half of the season, then his form tailed off possibly due to personal life issues such as the attempted burglary of his home. Despite that though, he still put up respectable numbers for United and at his best looked like a player worth £58m. Cuadrado hasn't looked like a player worth £30, let alone £30m.
July 29, 201510 yr Kaka actually had a great season in 2011-12, with him being one of Madrid's best players. Torres didn't come anywhere close to doing that for us.
