Must be said that world class central defenders came off a conveyor belt, there was plenty. Nowadays there does not seem to be any coming through. Todays best ones are coming to an end.

Strikers, midfielders and goalkeepers the quality is still there and there is also an argument that the players in these positions are possibly improving but todays defenders are not.

Shame because I really enjoy a defender who can get stuck in, last ditch tackles, blocking of the line its all part of the game. Quality defending is an art form.

Also I'm really surprised how many of you have included Roberto Carlos. Terrific player to watch, some unreal goals and freekicks but from what I remember he was very suspect defensively.

Certainly England's best ever defender, but I rate a few - Baresi, Scirea, Beckenbauer if played there - just slightly higher in all-time sense. He's right up there though.

My younger son (also a Blue) and I debate for example who is the the best French player. I say Platini, he says Zidane.
