It is not like we really have control over that. It is not a transfer where we can accept thr offer or refuse the offer and make the player stay.

Is all down to both Toni and AC. If they decide they want to stay, they will. If they want to go, they will.

For me though if they wanted to stay they would have signed already. They won't have been made tiny offers by the club, they would have been offered terms in line with our wage structure, and we are one of the highest wage bills around.

Toni said he would discuss his future with the club after the euros. Euros came and went, no deal signed and nothing but evasion from him on the subject.

AC said a new deal was looking really good a few months back. Nothing signed, so his mindset must have changed. A deal does not go form looking "really good" to not signed without a reason, and I expect that reason is an offer from another club which he, nor Toni, can officially accept until after Jan 1.

In the middle of wanting big money, he and Rudiger lost concentration for that goal. Both have to do better if we want to win the League.

I would expect more moments like that if they agree moves elsewhere.

Agree, a lot are in the head at this level, the minus 5 or 10% of effort on the field, suddenly accidents happen and results change.

Not only has new Barca boss Xavi been publicly praising TT and our side for how well we function as a side and do not need a star player to carry us, he has supposedly not so publicly made it know he wants to build his Barca defence around AC.

Has long been speculated on her thar AC is an ideal Barca CB in the Rikjard and Pep mold.

I reckon it’s all paper talk. Barca high earners are taking pay cuts, would be silly to sign a £200k/w defender with a huge sign on fee at this point. Can’t see them making CL in the next few seasons.

Yeah it does make you wonder how they would fit his salary in given the problems they have.

Is all media crapshoot guess work imo, but I also think there is a good chance Dave, Toni and AC all go.

Bet this is some big club talking to Christensen + his father (and agent) and offering them both a fat sign-on fee + top salary.

Turning into a real headache this. Rudiger + Christensen both very potentially on their way out is a disaster in football terms.

Rudiger he thinks is definitly on his way out. Too far apart in negotiations.

I think Rudi is gone to be honest. he's just that type of character who wants to maximise his salary and league experiences etc.

Would prefer he stays of course. But I don't think it's the end of world if we lose him. I think we've had/are having his peak years. We have also seen him lose focus for long periods of time, and it's no coincidence his best period has come at a time of contract renewal. I would be a bit concerned if we make him one of the top earners in the league then his performance will drop 10% or so, which makes a big difference. This is just a hunch of course.

As for AC - that would be a massive blow to lose an academy player who has finally reached his potential and is due to come into his peak years. I would be annoyed at both the club and him, given we have always stuck with him.

Would also make the Tamori, Zouma and Guehi sales hurt more.

Also convinced Rudiger is gone. Even if it was just him that is quite a significant problem though as we get nothing for him and he'll need to be replaced by a top class defender. So that will be a massive net loss in the market right there. In theory we need two LCBs as Sarr is not good enough.

Christensen leaving as well would leave us in deep sh*t. You can't really lose 67% of your backline in one window and hope to get away with it.

Still feel we messed up this summer going after Kounde when we had Rudiger stalling on a new contract. We should have signed a LCB competition/replacement early on in the window to put pressure on him, and shipped him out if he kept on dragging his feet.

We will be OK at RCB with Chalobah/Azpi/James, a replacement for Thiago is a priority, and I won’t be against trying to buy Guehi/Tomori back as a replacement for Rudiger.

Becoming weaker is excactly what you don't want though.

Chalobah isn't anywhere near as good as Christensen and James have cemented himself as one of the best RWBs in the world this season. Azpi is also on a bit of a downward trajectory. Not to mention he and T.Silva are both out of contract as well in about seven months.

Agreed I think that is exactly what happened with AC. I believe his dad is having him wait until Jan when they can show Chelsea the official offer from another club and try to get them to match it.

However I reckon this may have pissed Marina off and AC will be faced with a take it or leave it offer.

Also not concerned about replacing Toni  we have Levi Colwill for the left side.

Are we really sure he isn’t? Sample size is small but Chalobah is one of the highest rated CBs in the league this season. Just like CHO, I feel he needs a stretch of 5-10 straight starts in the PL to get some rhythm and fully establish himself. Christensen has 3yrs on him, but I feel the difference is much closer than people think. He makes more clearances, wins more tackles and makes more blocks presently.

I think the one thing he is missing along with Sarr (in the minority but I rate him highly) is game time. Maybe Rudiger & Thiago leaving in the summer might be the making of both players.

I had no idea there is "a type". Many people, footballers and probably Christensen included, would like to enjoy a salary increase. Similarly, most footballers would enjoy the experience of playing in a different league. Rüdiger played in Germany and Italy before signing for Chelsea. Christensen has been on loan in the Bundesliga for 2 years. If anything he's the one to eye a transfer to a new country, having only known Chelsea as a senior. 

We will just end up paying what needs to be paid, Christensen has always wanted to be here so we should prioritise securing his signature no matter the cost.

As to worrying about Marina not wanting to bend, we already did for CHO didn't we?

No you just don’t destroy your pay structure because a player might be after a last pay check (in Rudiger’s case), and I wish fans stopped bringing up CHO up whenever wages are been discussed (there was a concrete offer for CHO). 
 

You offer both Christensen & Rudiger £200k/w, next season you will have to offer James & Mount a similar wage. I just don’t think a CL win warrants a 2.5x & 2x wage increase respectively. We might just have to take a hit, and learn from it going forward.

Tuchel would flat out walk mate. And we'd compete with Norwich for the weakest defence in the league if that ever happen. Thankfully it won't.

What else can we do? We cannot make them sign on the terms we are comfortable with nor can we destroy our wage structure for them either.

So we either buy replacements if they go, whoever they may be, or promote youth players. TT does not seem to have issue using the likes of Reece and Mason. Who is to say we cannot find new signings he is happy with?

I don't think we would be ok with that. Chalobah is not ready to be a regular starter for the first team, Azpi isn't getting any younger and doesn't really have the qualities needed to play in the center of a back 3. James has grown a lot in recent years, but he's not somebody I would regularly start at RCB, it would be a waste of his talent. 

Christensen and Rudiger leaving would be a disaster, more now than ever. Christensen is really starting to turn into a top CB and Rudiger is at his peak. You can't realistically replace what they give us so quickly. I fear that all of the progress we have made recently will be undone if they go.

I was going to suggest Jake Clarke-Salter as an alternative/back-up for the LCB role but turns out he’s out of contract too!

Soon is the new 48 hours lol.

 

He is not involved in the contract talks, is all on his dad clearly and was suggested earlier today his dad was happy, something changed and now he is not.

Sounds like AC wants to stay but his dad will decide his next move, just like Haaland with his dad and Mino.
