Pep going on about the weight again

Here's some interesting quotes from Pep on midfielder Samir Nasri:

"He arrived a little bit overweight. He is much better now. He fights a lot in these weeks.

"There is still a little bit of weight. Last season he was injured in the season. We want to avoid that. We want the players on the pitch to be fit.

"We want their weight to be in the right place where they can run 90 minutes like Fernandinho and Kolorov and the others. Hopefully in the next two weeks he will be OK."

Does anyone think there's a possibility he's being a little naive ? If he boils them all down in weight, they will lose some size and strength, could that be to their detriment with the rough and tumble of the league?

Agreed. Particularly in our game - it's a cliche but true that we are more physical than European football. Fair point about fitness but, as with Spurs last season, it can only take you so far. City's issue has been motivational imo.

I see no reason why they couldn't go out and spend £100m this summer, especially given that they spent next to nothing last year.

From a business perspective, Arsenal are run really well. Certainly better than us. If I had the money to buy a very small share of a club for a return on the investment, I would probably choose Arsenal.

The fans are understandably upset because the business perspective isn't their primary focus. While the owners are satisfied with 4th because that brings Champions League money, it's frustrating for fans. They also charge high ticket prices; it's smart business to charge as much as people are willing to pay.

In a way it's refreshing to see a big club not get sucked into the out of control player transfer fee inflation. If all top tier clubs showed the transfer market restraint that Arsenal do, football would be better off.

They always do well the first half of the season, so Arsenal may be better off waiting until January when the transfer fees might be more reasonable than this summer.

My hunch is that spending more on summer transfers wouldn't really prevent the annual implosion. It has more to do with Wenger's tendency to become a flustered mess when he sees the race tightening, and the players likewise not having the psychology to perform in such circumstances. I'm the same way and can confidently say this isn't something that he can change especially at his age.

Perhaps the best investments Arsenal can make are with the backroom staff. Something is amiss with their medical staff as they have so many injuries. Hiring some good sports psychologists for the players would also help. Wenger needs assistants that thrive under pressure to ameliorate his inability to do so.

It sounds like Arsenal fans' upset at Wenger for not spending is misplaced. Gazidis is the one holding the wallet closed.

I know you like the way Arsenal run the club, but Wenger has had money to spend for many many years and has never bought the players they desperately need, he is as much to blame as any executive, thats pretty obvious.

Apparently Mourinho wants rid of Schweinsteiger... who could have seen that coming?

A load of the youngsters also seem to be on the chopping block. Take it with a pinch of salt though, the source the article quotes is the Sun.

That link goes to Brendan Rogers and Celtic, did you mean to link this one:

^ Yeah. I can't copy and paste on here so I have a notepad file with the links I want to share (which I have to type out manually). My mistake is that I don't delete them when I've posted them!

You could have a point. Apparently Conte is doing the reverse and putting Spindles Cuadrado on a diet of pies, burgers and pizza to stop him falling over when it's windy.

Not for me.

Schweinsteiger isn't even a shadow of the player he was for Bayern, he looks totally shot at the top level as a elite footballer.

I think he's too old and slow to do well in our league. Looked good in the euros. Bit not convinced he'd be much us for us

I agree with both of you that Schweinsteiger isn't the player he once was, certainly I don't see him fitting into Conte's 4-4-2... I know it was just a friendly but if the Liverpool game is anything to go by we may struggle to maintain possession this year, in a tactical sense I could see him doing well here in a midfield three alongside Fabregas/Kante (although paradoxically I hope Chalobah is given a run in a similar midfield role).

For me he could also do well in a defensive pivot alongside Matic, or perhaps even as a sweeper/half back in a 3-5-2...

I digress, if Mourinho wants him gone his experience/versatility could be an asset for us.

It would be hilarious if West Ham get dumped out of the Europa League without even qualifying for the groups.

All those adverts for seeing European games at the new stadium would then look hilarious.

he's having medical in LA and we're in LA

Can't say I'm not glad that transfer didn't happen though ;)
