David Luiz back at Chelsea

£30 million would be good but as a midfielder and off load Matic.

Considering the fact that there is absolutely no indication or rumors of matic leaving, it would be very hrd to sell him.

Also, why would we buy a 29 year old CB to play as a B2B mid.

I'm not sure if you are being serious but if you are then this is a massive over exaggeration.

I am being serious and I don't think it is. I don't see one person explaining why they think he's a good defender here. not one. I don't see anyone daring to suggest he's improved as a defender. before and after his chelsea career he was at clubs in leagues where he could afford to dick about to his hearts content safe in the knowledge that it would ultimately be of no consequence. that is where he belongs.

Tin foil hat on - what if this deal was always on the cards, and arranged a long time ago?

E.g. We say to PSG 'The price is 15m', take him for a few years, but give us 50M. We'll then buy some players to meet FFP and then take him back for 35M a few years later when we are a bit more sorted.

p.s. @Shotgun883 four or five years?!!! give me a break mate! this is like the election all over again.

He's 29! and at that he's actually quite an athletic player. Injuries permitted, he has at least until he is 33 as a viable first team option. Next year we could be looking at Christiansen, Zouma, Luiz and Cahill as our first team CB's. IMO Its a vastly superior position to Terry leaving next year and us hoping Christiansen hits the ground running.

I don't rate him

"David Luiz’s performance has received most criticism, which is natural considering he was the captain, and he completely lost his head after half-time. But in the first half he was the only Brazilian making things happen. Passes into the midfield zone simply weren’t an option, so it was entirely natural that he hit accurate long balls, and attempted to dribble forward.

He hit some excellent long diagonals to the left, usually to Hulk, and went on a couple of mazy runs, which worked nicely as Germany were effectively man-marking in midfield, so this forced someone to leave their man and stop David Luiz. Klose, in fairness, worked very hard too, often battling back – and at one stage receiving David Luiz’s elbow in his face when trying to make a tackle."

Anyway, what are you going to do? It's all done by the looks of it.

(Sorry for the unnecessary quote, mate. Can't seem to unquote things using the phone.)

It's not weaken our defense though, he improves it just by virtue of being another CB.

He weakens the first team defence in my opinion. Any defender will improve the defence by virtue of being a defender

nope. not having that.

we've got JT, cahill, ivanovic and potentially people like chalobah and tomori before january. that is, worse case scenario, enough for us to deal with a league and league cup campaign (for that is all we have). in january the window opens again, we should have zouma back and we could start to pursue people again. if napoli were out of the title race and europe then they might be happier to consider selling koulibaly for example. if not then we are 6 months away from christensen returning and we'd have a good idea of how useable the players we currently have are.

I always felt a fullback was a more important signing (although I have my misgivings about alonso). I even said in some other thread I'd rather not buy just anyone. back then, in those heady, cloud free days, I had forgotten luiz existed.

honestly when we sold the bloke I felt like I was a foster parent being told little damien was being moved on.

now apparently there was something wrong with the forms, he's back, and in the interim he's started to collect antique weaponry.

I find it very bizarre, but im not totally against it like most seem to be, and you definitley are. I figured we were either going to go all in for someone top, top quality or nothing at all. Our relative lack of matches wouldve seen us through even with the many doubts over our current options. However as i said previously id prefer this transfer than to 60m Koulibaily.

Where we do agree is about Alonso however. Dont think he makes us stronger bar giving us depth.

Amen.

Plus next year we will have a 30 year old Luiz, 37 year old JT, 31 year old GC, 33 year old ivanovic.

A team for the future.

I'll have a go. When he's not gone walkies and in combination with a solid positionally aware or athletic defender, he is an extremely good proactive defender. Reads the game well and makes interceptions rather than last minute blocks. Attacks start fluidly from him due to how he wins the ball moving forward. Pair him alongside Zouma and Dave, we will have an extremely able defensive unit that have pace and are all comfortable on the ball. He may not have changed his game massively but he is surrounded by players of a higher quality than when he left. Matic and Kante able to drop back and cover the odd stupid run, (Unlike Lampard in DM) Zouma able to athletically cover him if he steps up for a interception (unlike JT or GC).

@bjd

I don't get it. £30m on a player you know is a liability vs £60m on one who might not be? (unless you've seen koulibaly- I saw him play one game last season, he was great but obviously that's not enough)

if that is the choice I'd pay £90m for the latter anyway.

No one's going to sit here and tell you he's world class but he's had plenty of good games for us, which is why I'm baffled at your comment as that is generally what I would see being said for the likes of Torres, etc.

I'm not sure what you are saying here. You are both agreeing and disagreeing at the same time.

We don't even know if Napoli were ever going to sell Koulibaly though, even if we offered £60 million that still may not have been enough.

Nope never seen him, but i doubt hes worth anything like 60m, even in todays market.

At this stage i guess fees dont matter though i suppose. Ill maintain our defence is stronger than it was this time last week. Im just trying to look at it practically. Luiz and ALonso were nobodies first choices but at least its a few extra bodies and some breathing space. Still wouldnt surprise me to see Brana line up against Swansea next week in which case its main mission failed.

Neither is Koulibaly?

At least Koulibaly has the potential. If he was Contes main target then why not pay the money, if it's an extra 10m over Luiz then pay it. Or buy a stop gap for a year and go after him again next summer if Chelsea want him that bad.

Chelsea have gone out and brought someone else who isn't good enough to get in the first team but will have to play and they won't be able to get rid of now. Also brought him back for big money.

For me it feels like Chelsea have put all there hope into Luiz for the next few seasons.
