Christian Pulisic - Official

He's different to Hazard. He's more direct. Hazard frustrated me a bit as he would often slow down the play. Pulisic always looks to move the ball forward quickly.

It would be really good for the club to get a holdup player in his prime with CP.  Giroud has been doing well as of late but is well past his prime.  Is Werner a holdup type of guy at all?

You need to take a trip to reddit. Every time he scores it is one of the most viewed videos of the day. Of all content. On one of the biggest internet platforms.

You are seriously underestimating how many new fans we will get.

Over the next couple of years you will see the deals come in. But you might not hear that our American tour next summer will generate a lot more revenue than it would have otherwise.

This is all dependent on him being successful with us. That will bring American brands in. That's why every game we play will be watched there.

I think him being American added 5-10 mil to the price, but isn't the reason we signed him. That's all. However if he becomes one of our stars, we will make more.off him than the cost.

Looked it up, beats by Dre sponsor us, if that renews the price will increase. We are also now sponsored by fiserv who are an American brand for 1mil a year. Pulisic would have helped that deal.

Right, so do you think we signed him to sell shirts? How much do you think the new fans and sponsors will bring in?

Ahhh 6 year contract, my bad.

For some reason I thought it was a 4 year contract, and getting 45m over that time seemed absurdly high.

Works out under £140,000 a week which disgustingly isn’t that much for a footballer nowadays.

I think we paid 58m for him instead of 48m because he is American. I don't think we signed him to sell shirts as anyone with half a brain in football has realised if you sign a player to sell shirts, they have to actually be good.

I am not an economist so can't speak to what he will bring in. But if he is one of our top 3 players over the next 3-4 seasons (and through the next World Cup), it will be a lot of money. A f**k tonne of money. The American market is going to keep growing and it will be massive. When we tour America, we will be able to command a lot more money than we used to. When we sign a new shirt sponsorship deal after 3, we will be able to command more money. We don't have that many commercial partners at the moment - compare us to Man United, so we have the scope to add more. This all adds up and there's no simple calculation.

Not just money, but softer influence. Schurrle was delighted to sign for Chelsea because Ballack had played for us. If literally the best American footballer of all time (which Pulisic could likely be) is synonymous with Chelsea, then the next great American footballer will probably be a Chelsea fan. It makes him think twice if his options are Chelsea, United, Liverpool etc.

Add to this further,

In 2018, our commercial revenue was 170m. Compare that to United with 276m we are talking about a 100m difference. In 1 year.

How much can the number 1 American player ever bridge that gap is questionable. But over his contract, it will eclipse the amount we paid for him if he continues his growth in my opinion.

Yeah pretty standard for one of the top players at a big club.

But if it were a 4 year contract, he would be on over 200,000 a week, which just seemed unlikely for us to offer for him at the time

Don't worry, he will get a new wage and contract next season if he keeps up this level of performance on the pitch.

The fact that he's American is good though, it really opens up a big market there and a lot of American fans are interesting and tuning in, I'm sure you're one of them?

But I completely agree with you on the Hazard comparisons. In terms of dribbling, you can see why, I had no idea he was so tidy with the ball, one thing I do like about Pulisic though is that he will take risks. He loses the ball more than Hazard, but he takes a lot more risks.

Yes, it's good that he's American. And he will attract some fans to Chlesea, but not as many as people would think. I am already a football and been following football for decades, I am only now following Chelsea again since the days of Drogba, Essien, Lampard, Robben, etc.

What I was saying is he should be compared to footballers all over the world, not to just American footballers. I think doing that will be an injustice to him and trying to limit his ceiling. Just because he's Aerican, he can't be one of the best out there?

Frank agrees with my analysis. He must be reading theshedend

To be fair it is stupid to say it will not help him being American and equally stupid to say it will take us to new riches. It is something in between.

If we use that market well and put in resources there it can be massively beneficial. I think we should go big to America. Travel there on the summer and use dollars to market our club in there.

Pulisic can definetly be benefitial for people to choose Chelsea in front of Manu, Real or Barcelona.

If we don't use him for our benefit I think we are a bit dumb.

As a player he is very very exciting to see. Not a big personality but Americans are very used to value merit over personality with their sports heroes.

I don't think we bought him because he is American. It is just very convenient he happens to be.

Well everyone here is a better manager than the professionals so he’s probably looking for some tips and ideas.

Not a manager, but I'm a pretty good talent Scout 😀

"I said his ceiling would be Eden Hazard. Obviously that's best case, but Pulisic's strength is taking on defenders 1v1. He just walks by them, and he's similar in stature to Hazard (no where near as strong yet)."

I've gone back through the rumors and the beginning of this thread just for Sh*ts and giggles. Like I've said from the beginning... the kid can play.

Good read in that thread. I touched on it the other day. I think it shows that its naive to make sweeping statements about 19/20 year old players, because they can and will improve. Especially the ones with the right attitude like Pulisic.

Spot on.

He's a genuine footballer, and the fact that he's an American is an added bonus in terms of marketing potentials/gains.

Who said this?

"The thing I’m so happy with now is when we’re finding it hard to break teams down, he is taking responsibility to change that. It’s been great to see.”"

Looks like we should expect to see more touches from Pulisic going forward, especially against teams that pack 11 in the box.

If I am a defender and I see Pulisic drives toward my box with the ball, I'll be pissing in my pants.

Challenge him and try to take him down, then you risk being called for a penalty.

Stay off him and let him come, you risk him scoring or laying it off to one of his mates to score.

You can't win either way.

They will have to figure him out quick, or it be a nightmare going against Chelsea next season; especially with Timo running along side Pulisic and Mount right behind them.

Just adding some color to a few previous comments:

1.  I'm a new fan, because of Pulisic.  There's likely a few hundred thousand more like me currently and millions more over the next few years.

2.  Beats by Dre is Apple.  Apple bought Beats a few years ago.  So that's not just a minor, throwaway advertiser.

3.  Pulisic joining Chelsea now rather than a few years ago is huge.  Best possible timing.  Soccer was in its infancy (in the USA) when McBride, the USMNT goalies, Dempsey, and Donovan (when he moonlighted as an Everton player) played in the PL.  Games were hard to find, usually hit or miss on Fox Sports One.  Today, Soccer is on NBC Sports from pretty much 4 am to 12 pm PST (California)--on Saturdays and Sundays.  Nicely positioned before/during the early college football games on Saturdays and the early NFL games on Sundays.  And sports betting is slowly becoming legalized.  All these factors are creating a situation where the ability to develop new soccer fans is unlike any other time in the past.

4.  And anecdotally, my wife and I are expecting a baby in a few weeks.  We've been trying to buy a Chelsea onesie for him.  Via Amazon.  But the one that we want, the Chelsea blue onesie, is currently sold out.

Welcome.

Judging by the massive MacBook Frank had on display during the press conferences for we have a deal with Apple too.

Congrats on the baby, good luck with the hunt for Chelsea baby things!

I would not be surprised to see more American corporate sponsors over the next few years, not all because of Pulisic, but his success will def have a part in it.

But that means Pulisic needs to put up big numbers consistently to draw these financial interests.

Clarify something for me.  Why would he get a new wage next season?

Maybe I don't know all the in's and outs of contracts for footballers but if they have him on contract for 6 years he will have 5 more years on his deal.

Why would Chelsea just decide to pay him more?

Edit: For the record I got a Chelsea hat, myself.

I probably have the same Onsie on our Amazon baby registry for our son who is due at the end of September.  Hopefully it'll come back in stock soon!

Congrats sir!
