Of course Cucurella was going to be that far up he doesn’t recover at 100kph. Sanchez’s pass literally went straight to a Fulham Player and with Tosin that far back they exploited the space. When Fulham got possession back from the Sanchez kick they were well inside their own half. They really shouldn't be scoring so easily from there, but none of our players were able to challenge or get back as they were all visibly knackered. Watch Gusto - he tries to get back and his legs won't let him. Same with Fernandez. They try to sprint but have nothing left in the tank. If we had fresh players on the pitch it might have been a different story. Silva even said after the game that they had a deliberate plan to target the space vacated by Cucurella playing so high in Maresca's system btw.
December 28, 20241 yr My only criticism of the Rob is he kicked the ball in the middle of the pitch. Kick it down the right and we get a draw.

Fresh subs being faster to react and quicker in body than tired players who have done a lot of chasing all game? That cannot be, no point in making subs for the sake of making subs right?
December 30, 20241 yr Was by far our best defender in the middle of defence, but we have him defending out wide again since the Fofana injury.
December 30, 20241 yr Said a few months ago he’s been mediocre in a Chelsea shirt and there hasn’t been much if any improvement since then. His fake hardman act is infuriating too, particularly tonight at the end of the game when you’ve been bullied for 90 mins.
December 30, 20241 yr I see his qualities but... without Fofana next to him (can't believe I am saying it), he looks medicore? I know he is still young but not sure what Europe sees in him with all the interesting going around - if we things don't go our way, he loses his head so quickly and that's the last thing you need.

I think Tosin's been better in recent weeks. He's had more composure than Colwill who is playing like a bit of a passion merchant in recent times.
December 31, 20241 yr I feel for Colwill. He is a very good defender but so far this season he has had a number of different CB partners plus changes to full backs and doesn't have a great keeper behind him either and he is still only 21. And that on the back of largely being played out of position last season. The one thing that does annoy me about Colwill is how often he goes down holding his head or face. Come on lad, if you want to be the next JT you don't go down. PERIOD.

Come on lad, if you want to be the next JT you don't go down. PERIOD. Colwill has started 18 games. He's had Cucurella as left back in 14 of them. James played 2, and Gusto the other 2. As his centre back partner, he had Fofana for 12 of the first 13, then Badiashile for one game when Fofana first got injured. Benoit was then injured himself, so Tosin has filled in for the last 4 games. Bottom line, is that continuity has been pretty good in defence in 23/24 compared to what we had to patch up with last season due to injuries This smacks of making excuses for Colwill being a bit inconsistent to me, as you would expect for a 21 year old learning on the job. December 31, 20241 yr I never got the hype around him even at Brighton. I don’t see this towering defender everyone sees in the future. He’s not very good on the ground and loses battles too easily. He’s weak. Guehi is what everyone thinks Colwill is. I guess because he’s cobham he will get a past but he’s hasn’t been better than Fofana who I believe is our best CB. Colwill gets drawn out of position far too often and gets into too much stupid arguments on the pitch. If Tosin gets a run of games like Colwill he will look and defend better than him, he’s far more composed. But maybe I am wrong and in 4 years time he’s been talked about as the best CB in the world, I doubt it though.

He can kick on a lot from there, both in terms of physical and mental maturity. A shame we don't have a Desailly for him to play alongside, like JT did at a similar age. The JT 2001/2 season version is the fair comparison to where we are with Colwill btw.

I think Colwill is a great player and a future team Captain. A lot of our young players - youngest team in the top flight of anywhere in Europe - could really do with some proper guidance. Even our manager has very little game management experience. Colwill annoyed me last night in the ipswich game he went down clutching his face at one point. Ppffftt . . .No, John Terry would not do that and Thiago or Desailly would not do that. Less theatrics and more concentration Levi. But maybe that is what happens when the young kid is learning from the most experienced defender in the team and that bloke happens to be Cucurella? Edited December 31, 20241 yr by TheCeleryKing

If you compare him to others his age group in the league, such as Branthwaite thats being hyped up, he beats them all. It's unfortunate he is being tasked to lead the defence as he clearly needs a more experienced partner by his side.
December 31, 20241 yr Quite funny that we've presumably assessed the centre back situation, and the decision is to bring back from loan the 18 year old Aaron Anselmino to bolster our centre back options LOL. Let's hope he is some kind of physical and mental genetic outlier 🙂

Much of the team is young but it seems some players get more leeway than others. Like I said I hope he proves me wrong and becomes one of best in the world, but so far in my opinion he just looks okay.

I can’t comment on the kid from Everton, I haven’t seen watched him much.

I have the feeling that he is in fact the real deal. Time will tell. He has of course played almost 20 professional football games now, so the sky is the limit. Anselmino mainly operates as a defender and has been described as a "tower that clears everything head-on and almost always prevails in one-on-one situations"

I suspect he will be used more in cup competitions this season but who knows?
January 4, 20251 yr Only fair to point out his very good performance today amid some strange criticism he’s come under recently.

January 4, 20251 yr Josh honestly looks better than him, less panicked, drives out with the ball comfortably makes simple easy passes and just seems so composed and controlled. His ceiling looks so high. Hope he’s not rushed and they protect him.
