May 12, 20224 yr We could possibly have up to 11 so called first team players leave in the close season, which of the current Loanees and Youth players should we give a chance to and where should we concentrate funds on strengthening? Sterling Emerson Maatsen Lewis Hall Ampadu Colwill Gilmour Gallagher Anjorin Vale Broja Are any of these good enough to save some money in the transfer market to concentrate funds where they are really needed?

I’ve highlighted the players that I think would be good enough to play a role next season, the others I think need at least another loan.
May 13, 20224 yr New owners will no doubt want to make a statement and spend some money, and do their metaphorical shopping in Waitrose rather than Lidl ... even though much of what is on offer in Lidl is the same quality ! If it was up to me, then there would be a role in the squad for Ampadu, Colwill, Gallagher and Broja. I think TT likes Sterling and Emerson, so they may be in the frame as the back up full backs, assuming Azpi and Alonso are both off back to Spain. I think one of Cumming or Baxter could also be a capable 3rd keeper, possibly even 2nd if we were feeling brave. I'd offer Gilmour on loan to Everton or Rangers, try and get Maatsen a PL loan, secure first loans for Hall and Vale, and sell/release Anjorin, Castillo, Lawrence, Ziger, Ballo, Clarke-Salter, none of whom I think will ever be good enough for our squad, let alone the first team. I'd also be looking to fire sell Bakayoko, Batshuayi, Rahman, and Miazga. With new owners in place, it is a good opportunity to stop all this perpetual loan nonsense for transfer duds ...
May 13, 20224 yr I think we should keep Ampadu. He is a solid player and could be cover for dm and rb (in a 433) and aditional cover for cb. Edited May 13, 20224 yr by Blue_Boy
May 13, 20224 yr Tuchel has shown on inclination to play young players in a season where we were crying out for fresh and fit players to take the strain of the 1st teamers, so I wouldnt expect him to do any different next season unfortunately. Any players leaving will be replaced by big money signings.

Any players leaving will be replaced by big money signings. Academy boys Chalobah & RLC have about 70 games between them this season. Loftus Cheek may not be all that young anymore but no one had much hope for him or certainly not Chalobah before the season started and yet the manager have given them both a lot of chances. Gallagher and Colwill are almost certainly coming back to be a part of our squad for the upcoming season as well. Certainly wouldn't be so sure about only big money signings at all.

How many young players has he played during this season, not including ones already part of the first team when he arrived. Weve seen him rather play established first teamers out of position (often poorly) rather than an actual youth player. We had a couple get some time in a league cup game, then nothing since. I think one got about Vale got a few minutes here and there, maybe 20 at most. Edited May 13, 20224 yr by dkw

All other than Webster played in the EFL cup game or Fa cup game, all looked like they could handle the step up. All haven't played a single minute in the first team since, other than Vale who got 5 minutes in a game. All this while everyone agrees our first team are knackered and desperately in need of rest, which has led to a lot of injuries to them, playing out of form players and others out of position. So empirical evidence shows Tuchel is unwilling to play youth players in a season where we desperately needed them, therefore its pretty easy to see he wont play them next season.
May 13, 20224 yr None of those are ready for much first team football. Vale perhaps could have made a few more appearances, but none of the others.

I disagree, Hall showed he could handle that level, as did Soonsup-Bell. And Vale and Hall play in positions we were infilling for several matches, playing midfielders in, or relying on players out of form.

First chance he had to take a proper look at the academy players a player who wasn't on a single supporters radar was promoted (and played in a cup final).
May 13, 20224 yr Lewis Hall showed he could handle the level of Chesterfield from the National Leagues. Should have been needless to say there is a difference between Chesterfield and the teams we usually face. Simons and Soonsup-Bell looked out of place v Brentford in my opinion. But the manager started them in the quarterfinals of the League Cup. I don't think they can complain either. You also got to be good enough as a youngster. Only the best will make it and Gallagher and Colwill as mentioned previously probably will be part of the squad next season. What will the argument be then? That he doesn't play the new seventeen year old from the academy that looks decent?

I also don't think they are ready for the rigours of the premier league, maybe the odd cup game, that's why we send the older ones out on loan to get them that experience, no way would we be chucking 17/18 year olds in at the deep end, if we would then the older ones like Ampadu, Anjorin, Gallagher, Gilmour and Broja, Lawrence, Maatsen, Cummings, Baxter, Sterling would of stayed and not gone on loan...

Trouble is, we've got so used to Cobham being a conveyor belt of talent, that it has rather flown under the radar that this year's crop are really struggling to complete even at the PL2 level. They had to win their final game just to avoid relegation. If they can't compete and make a difference at that level, why would they be ready for first team action in the PL ? Yes Hall played well, against Chesterfield, but even in that game, against non-league opposition, the intensity was so far above what he is used to that he collapsed with cramp near the end. To then throw him into the fray in the PL would have been very ill-advised. You can't put youngsters into the team if they simply aren't ready !

We have a system now. develop at academy, go on loan, get tested in the summer, get promoted or go out on loan again / sold. Chalobah followed this approach and was promoted to the first team. Gallagher, Colwill, Broja, Gilmour, Ampadu will get the same opportunity this summer. The ones you list will end up going on loan. Unless they look to be a true generational talent - CHO - then that path won't be deviated. Edited May 13, 20224 yr by bisright1
May 13, 20224 yr My guess is only Gallagher will get significant minutes next year from the loanees. Dependant on recruitment of key targets, Colwill will go out on loan again, maybe with a contract extension. Maatsen is rumoured to be interesting Dortmund. Broja looked a shoe in earlier in the season, he has had a significant drop in form.It wouldn’t surprise me if a big offer came in, we didn’t cash in with a buyback or even be makeweight in a deal for Rice. Harvey Vale is out of contract in June, could he end up at Southampton or Brighton? Baxter has reputedly done well at Hull, however young keepers need to play, possibly let him have another season there?Gilmour will be the interesting one after his disastrous loan spell, maybe another loan or possibly we’ll cash in on him. Ampadu still looks a little reckless, not really sure on him tbh Edited May 13, 20224 yr by charierre

May 13, 20224 yr Thought this was a good summary of what is going on at youth level : https://thechels.net/2022/reflections-on-the-2021-22-chelsea-academy-season/
May 13, 20224 yr I went through a period when I was obsessed with youth players getting into the first team squad. When we had that unbelievable run in the FA Youth cup where we dominated for a number of years, thought a few of those youngsters at least deserved a crack. But it hasn't been until more recently that we have seen youngsters get a chance and that is really only down to the transfer ban. Sure Lamps deserves credit for showing faith in the likes of Mount, but if there had been no transfer embargo, I doubt it would have happened (and Lamps wouldn't have got the gig in the first place). So I won't criticise TT as we are exactly where we have always been. Pressure on the coach to compete and win trophies every season and it is hard to do that whilst experimenting with youth players. Like others, I would still like to see a few more integrated and I would also prefer to see a young hungry player come off the bench to try and make an impact, like a Gimour or Broja, rather than a Jorginho or Saul. But I think unless they can really prove themselves; like Gallagher has at Palace, we are unlikely to see too many over the coming seasons and I don't blame TT for that who has no doubt been told he HAS to close that gap on City & Liverpool.
May 13, 20224 yr I've heard Boehly say he wants to get the balance right between bringing academy players through as well as having top talent. He admits it is a balance to works towards.
May 13, 20224 yr Besides Broja, Colwill, Gallagher & Gilmour, the ones I really want to see given a chance in pre-season are Sterling and Maatsen for obvious reasons of having some depth and pace in the wingback positions. Even then I think it's a bit of stretch to have the 6 of them staying next season. All the others can go on another loan (maybe Ampadu getting yet another closer look). Emerson is a case of "overrated by absence" as he offers absolutely nothing of note at both ends, should definitely sell while we can still get some fee. Edited May 13, 20224 yr by Brigadeiro Mk II

The only ones I would consider right now are Colwill, Gallagher and Broja. I would prefer another loan deal for Colwill, but with 2 CB's going and 1 not being good enough (Sarr) we will need to bring Colwill back. Gallagher has been good at Crystal Palace, he has to be bought back to challenge for a spot in our first team. Broja is patchy, but we have seen enough to suggest he can be pretty good. I don't think Hall or Vale are ready yet, Vale would be good to send out on loan though. Gilmour has been a flop at Norwich, I don't think he has progressed a single bit there, if anything, he's gotten worse. I'm not sure what is going to happen to him, but he'll probably get loaned out again. Hopefully it will be to a club that suits him. Anjorin, Maatsen, Sterling I haven't seen much of them so can't say either way. Ampadu and Emerson should be sold. Neither are good enough.
