The 18-year-old is moving into first-team football and tipped for big things at Stamford Bridge, but his status as an academy graduate in a squad that already features 44 professionals means he has become a player the club would consider selling, particularly with how Profit and Sustainability Rules ensure any such fee would go into the accounts as pure profit.

Chelsea's pursuit of this policy, and the pending exit of Conor Gallagher, is known to have caused ripples among the club's underage teams.

The pure profit circus continues. Well, at least we spent £8.5m on some random full back from the MLS that isn't even half as good!

"The sale of other graduates such as Gallagher, Mason Mount and potentially Trevoh Chalobah has caused ripples in Chelsea's underage teams, with many of their academy successors now wondering whether they have to consider moves away. The policy is understood to have had a profound impact at that level."

How on earth has he jumped to this conclusion with half of the 44 players are either U21 players or players that the club are actively looking to get rid or loan?

Caleb Wiley is a LB (who's going to Strasbourg) and has no bearing on Achaempong.

Well warning signs were there in the summer when Madrid and Newcastle were interested in him. A smart club would have gotten rid of one Disasi & Badiashile and made him the 4th choice, see Arsenal with Nwaneri, Liverpool last season with Quansah. Instead we have kept both and sent him off to the U21 along with Tyrique George.
Wouldn’t even acknowledge the contract offer in his shoes, club have the Jan & Summer windows to extract the maximum fee. Won’t be surprised if he ends up at Newcastle and you can be assured they will have him playing 1st team football alongside Hall & Livramento.

I mean, he was never gonna be good at the inverting system anyway so we should really have sold him.

He's perfect for RCB when the LB inverts.

Hate how we always make this so public.

He would but we don't do that very often? It's mostly both fullbacks inverting.

Didn't see James invert all too much against Liverpool. It was Gusto (Normally Cucurella) who inverts and becomes an additional CAM.

Laughable that we seeDisasi and Fofana doing shifts at RB when James/Gusto are unavailable instead of giving him minutes.

We had arguably the best academy in the world and were starting a clear pathway into the first team to now throw it all away under this ownership. Really sad to see.

The situation seems so stupid to me, surely giving Acheampong game time while he and his agents mull over a new contract makes it more likely he signs, rather than treating him like sh*t?

Think this is the way it will be from now on. I don't understand the ruthlessness behind it, but I suspect it has something to do with players being manipulated by their agents. We as a club shouldn't be taken advantage of. We fall victim to it far too often.

Look at the excuse for Ngumoha wanting to go to Liverpool. He was lured by Liverpool's ability to field a bunch of kids in the league cup final. He sees a better pathway there. Ignoring the fact that he's being paid well above what a youth player should be earning, and those same kids that played in the league cup final for Liverpool are now either sold or loaned...

Acheampong signed his first professional contract earlier this year, and since he was U18 it couldn't be more than 2 years. There was probably an agreement to extend after he turned 18 and with a little help of his agent's snake tongue, he's now stalling. "No clear pathway". I always find this a half hearted excuse. He should be starting over Disasi but I don't see any harm in him coming on for Disasi in Conference League matches when he's still barely 18 years old. The pathway I see which I am sure the club are explaining to him is that he'd eventually replace Disasi and be cover for James at RB/RCB.

Guehi and Livramento say hi.

They're welcome to say hi to a fully fit Reece James and Tomori back then. We don't have that luxury anymore, now they're being blocked by worse foreign imports.

You mean Tomori who was frozen out for a year in favour of a bang average Zouma?

Being frozen out from all teams until this is sorted is unnecessary.

He literally can minutes against the likes of Shamrock Rovers or other weaker teams in the Europa Conference League for example.

I don’t see the point of that move, it’s the equivalent of blackmail IMO.

Zouma was near enough an academy lad anyway.

You named two lads that left while at the time we had James/Tomori/Tammy/CHO/Mount all getting regular minutes. Now who do we have? Reece when he's fit.

Beeb...

Chelsea's young academy defender Josh Acheampong is training with the first team again ahead of a trip to Heidenheim in the Conference League.

The 18-year-old looked on the verge of making his breakthrough under manager Enzo Maresca but an impasse over signing a new contract has led to his exile since late September.

Acheampong has not played for either Chelsea's first-team or in academy matches for over two months.

The unprecedented move to squeeze Acheampong, who still has more than 18 months left on his contract, has raised eyebrows in some quarters but a return to senior training may be viewed as a positive development.

Acheampong, who was integral in pre-season and played in the first-team against Barrow earlier this season, may have seen the situation partly change due to injuries to Reece James and Malo Gusto. He is viewed as the next right back in line to play when those two are out.

The limited options at Maresca's disposal and a match against lesser opposition would typically be viewed as an opportunity for Acheampong to further his development.

A number of big first-team players were not pictured in Chelsea’s open training session today, signalling heavy rotation is to be expected. Academy players Kiano Dyer, Shim Mhueka and Tyrique George were also in the group.

Maresca will likely be questioned on Acheampong at his press conference in Germany at 7pm tonight.
