I mean if with Reece breaking down yet again, an out of sorts Gusto and Disasi being the ones you need to get past does not encourage you to believe you can make it here then he would be better off leaving. That is very limited competition.

It's obviously an excuse to eventually sell another "pure profit" youngster who has been with us since the age of 8. Having read a bit more about this situation since, I'm not sure if I agree with this anymore. Another way to look at it is that Acheampong, who is someone that Chelsea has invested in since the age of 8, will leave in 1.5 year's time with no compensation to the club for it's investment. Unlike the situation with Tariq Lamptey, Reece James and Tino Livramento, where the club had to choose one from 3 potential EPL-quality RBs, Acheampong is still very much an unknown first-team quantity with potential. There is a lot of risk for the club and very little for the player in this situation.

December 11, 20241 yr Maresca apparently confirms that Acheampong starts tomorrow against Astana and that a new contract is close to being signed. https://x.com/NizaarKinsella/status/1866765631619473905 Edited December 11, 20241 yr by Gordon Bennett
December 11, 20241 yr Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong close to signing new contract – Enzo Maresca By Simon Johnson 3m ago Enzo Maresca has confirmed Chelsea academy graduate Josh Acheampong is close to signing a new contract and is set start his first senior game for the club against Astana tomorrow night. The Athleticexclusively reported in October that the 18-year-old had been frozen out of all Chelsea teams because negotiations over a new deal had broken down. But there have been increasing signs of a reconciliation in recent weeks as Acheampong trained with the senior squad ahead of their Conference League match at Heidenheim a fortnight ago. The defender also played for the Under-21 side for the first time in two months when he came on as a substitute against Derby County on November 29. Acheampong’s contract runs out in 2026 but Maresca believes an extension is nearly finalised. He said: “With Josh it is all quite clear. We all love Josh, the club loves Josh, I love Josh and we are trying to find an agreement. We are close, we are almost there. We’ll see.” A further indication of the teenager’s improved situation is he is in line to face Astana in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference match in Kazakhstan. Maresca added: “He is in the squad and is probably going to play from the start.” Maresca also confirmed a number of senior players will be left behind so they can concentrate on preparing for the Premier League fixture at home to Brentford on Sunday. One of the players who is remaining at Cobham is winger Noni Madueke, who is expected to start at the weekend due to Pedro Neto being suspended.
December 12, 20241 yr Best of the younger players today. I don't want us to sell this guy. With James never being available and Gusto struggling to adapt this season, I think there is a route for him into the first team in the future.

Acheampong can easily fill in as a traditional right back, or in the more likely case, fill in for Fofana as that outside RCB. James and Fofana are injury prone so he will have a sh*t ton of opportunities. There are a lot of options. In my world, I'd sell the Monaco chuckle brothers + Tosin, bring in Tah for the experience and Araujo to rotate with Colwill. Gusto/Acheampong/James Tah/Fofana Colwill/Araujo Cucurella/Veiga

Gusto/Acheampong/James Tah/Fofana Colwill/Araujo Cucurella/Veiga No way he is staying to be 3rd or effectively 4th choice RB. There is an Enzo conundrum in the middle of the park that shifts Caicedo to RB already. I also can’t see us buying 2 new CBs in the summer. Tah is in talks with Bayern & Barca, so he is off your list. His agent can point to Lewis Hall moving to Newcastle in the summer and already becoming a starter, and an England international to boot. These new generation won’t hang around to be 3rd/4th choice for a position, when 17-18yr old players are starting around Europe for top clubs. Edited December 13, 20241 yr by ducavis

I'm sorry but neither Barca or Bayern are as exciting as the current Chelsea project. The Premier league is the best league in the world and anyone can see what is currently happening here. We're setup to dominate for a decade.

At least in theory. Selling him, so far, has not gone the way the owners hoped for.

December 18, 20241 yr He and George are now first team players and have their own lockers in the first team locker room.

Will be interesting to see how this works out in both cases, as neither has had any loan experience to date, so this is very raw talent we have here. Acheampong in particular has only played 122 minutes of senior football, and almost all of it against low level opponents like Barrow and Astana. Maresca clearly rates him very highly, and we probably have zero untouchable defenders, so it is all to play for, and best of luck to him. Given the injury troubles of James and Fofana, the likely sale of Disasi, and the inconsistency of Gusto, he has a great opportunity to establish himself on the right hand side of our defence.
