Josh Acheampong

Featured Replies

I doubt anyone ever saw him starting our first league game of the season against Crystal Palace, a pretty strong premier league side.

Made a few mistakes but considering his experience at top level that was a really impressive game from him. Makes you wonder how good he could be after a full season. I’d say he’s earned another start, even if Tosin recovered from injury.

With the Colwill situation, I can see us winning either way. We sign a top class centre back to bolster our back line, or Acheampong get several minutes of experience and improve.

I agree and he is developing well. My only concern is that upon occasion his passing can be poor. Not in technique, not in weight or quality of pass, just his antennae is a bit off. This will naturally improve with more game time. The problem that we have when we play such a defensive based system and at such a slow tempo as we did today, those passes between the lines have to be spot on, all the time. One poor pass like Josh made today (not that he is the only one, mind) and the advancing opposition are upon us immediately and we struggle to recover. I think his quality in the tackle and his general defensive quality, plus his foraging runs with the ball at his feet would be even better highlighted in a team playing at tempo and with an intensity in the atmosphere.

Made 1 or 2 bad passes but even experienced players like Colwill and Tosin do the same thing so I’m not going to focus too much on it. It can happen when trying those kind of passes.

More importantly he was very good defensively, looking forward to him getting a good run of games.

Won’t happen. Marisca has already hinted that Fofana is back next game, and I reckon Tosin is also.

Josh is clearly talented when you think of the calibre of teams that were after him before making his first team debut, and his current status isn’t ideal. 3rd choice RB, and 4th choice RCB means he will struggle for mins. According to the press; Bournemouth have made a couple of offers for him this summer but we said no. Why not sell him for £20m, and include a buy back and a sell on clause. That way he goes away and gets regular game time, we can then assess him further down the line.

You can’t rely on Fofana being fit and Badishille being…good. There is no need to send Josh out on loan or sell with buy back.

We have plenty of games this season, Josh should be starting every league cup game, every early round FA cup games, half our CL matches that will be against teams we should beat like Olympiacos or whatever and lower sides in prem.

These are just games he should be starting, there’s multiple opportunities for him to come on as a sub. When you tally it up he will get the same if not more, as chances are we will go further in cups, mins here than he would at Bournemouth.

I’m more than happy to ride or die with Josh this season, clearly has the makings of a player with the potential to be our best CB for years to come.

A couple of errant passes and got turned once but other than that he kept one of the PL’s best strikers in check all day and made it look rather comfortable.

A future CB partnership of Josh & Levi fills me with nothing but positivity.

“Hard to quantify exactly how Josh Acheampong did in the 'Colwill role' in defence.

But he registered 93.5% pass accuracy, had 108 touches and 93 passes in total. He also had the most duels, duels won, aerial duels, aerial duels won and most tackles won yesterday.”

Maybe the club are right to say to Enzo to “use the current squad”?

Play the kid and don’t spend on a CB we have too many already unless you can ship out two of them permanently.

I agree. Really liked what I saw of Acheampong. Sure he will make mistakes but he is 100% better with the ball at his feet than someone like Badiashille and those two tackles he made quickly one after the other were exceptional. I'd be happy to see him start regularly.

I kind of think this is kicking the can down the road. We need someone now and why not give him a squad place for the season, rotate him in and out when needed, and use him in cup games and give him minutes in the CL against potentially similar or weaker opponents.

He has demonstrated yesterday he's up for the challenge and can compete against a bully boy striker like Mateta who is no slouch.

Would certainly prefer shipping out Badishile and Disasi before Josh.

If he was at Brighton i'm sure the owners would have put a £45m bid in for him by now. I don't see what Huijsen offered last season that Acheampong can't offer this season.

Great comparison this 👏

He has good ball control and is good at running with the ball.

His passing needs work though. Most of his passes were very basic, rarely any attempts to break the lines and still made 2 sloppy passes giving it away in a dangerous area (the first one lead to the situation that gave palace the free kick that Eze scored the disallowed goal from).

Apart from that he did quite well. He was obviosuly outmatched physically by Mateta but apart from one situation he held his own regardless.

I was really impressed with him yesterday. I thought he gave a great account of himself against a good palace attack. My highlight was definitely where he smashed into a perfect slide tackle, bounced straight up got to the loose ball first and won the free-kick, beautiful!

He had a few moments as you’d expect with any young player, the loose pass leading the the free-kick leading to the disallowed goal but there was a lot that went wrong after that pass that ended up with the ball in the back of the net.

I think the club are well within their rights to tell Maresca to work with the players that he has at his disposal, it wasn’t the defence that was the problem yesterday anyway, it was the 85 minutes between shots on targets!

Did well over all for me too. A couple of "Harry McGuire" passes that he definitely needs to cut out but luckily neither one cost us.

Highlight for me wasn't the slide tackle. In the second half he got a bit too close to Mateta out on the right hand side and Mateta just turned in and bounced him. But Josh had the reactions to keep his feet, regain his balance and the recovery pace to get back at him.

Good performance against Liverpool. Think his injury is because of the intensity of the game and he doesn't play regularly so I hope it's not something serious.

I'd like to see him much more honestly, I believe he has a talent and quality as CB.

Give him Fofana's minutes.

Apparently it was cramp.

Deserves praise for yesterday's performance after his so-so cameo against Brighton. He now needs to be playing regular, fingers crossed Maresca will now trust him and give him extra minutes. If not it has to be a loan for him in January.
