Yeah as long as he hasn't got some chronic injury then it's well worth the punt, even if it's for a year or 2 while Penders gets up to speed he'd be worth it. We absolutely cannot afford to go the whole season with Sanchez in goal.

I would rather we just promote Penders to no1. Martinez is prone to the same stupid mistakes Sanchez is and his shot stopping is worse than Sanchez

Interesting to see if anything comes of the supposed injury he had.

I don’t hate the idea of him coming in, adds to the whole adding experience to our squad approach.

Would also just love for the media obsession around our keeper situation to die down so that when Penders eventually comes in, it isn’t a baptism of fire. I think signing Martinez shuts Neville and co up.

I don't know. From what I saw at Strasbourg, Penders is nowhere near ready in my opinion. I’ve been saying all summer that keeping him in the squad this season never made much sense. He needs regular minutes and the freedom to make mistakes at a club like Strasbourg where the pressure is basically nonexistent relative to what we’re trying to achieve.

Not sure about the shot-stopping narrative. For save %, DataMB has Sánchez at 43% last season and Martínez at 75%.

Good point. When you compare the stats the difference is stark.

I don't think Penders is ready either, it's more a reflection on my thoughts on the keepers we have/are linked with. If these are the options I would rather throw Penders in and see how it goes.

It's possible I was thinking the season before with Martinez shot stopping. Either way don't think its an upgrade on the pitch, off it with his experience and him being right age to not block Penders it makes sense

On this it is a concern and needs to be assessed to see if he remains the same keeper.

What happened with him was he broke a finger before the Europa league final. He played through it in pain killers.

After he W's assassed and advised to get surgery. He declined it as it meant he would miss the world cup. He played through that on pain killers only he was in pain "every day" he said.

Not sure if surgery is an option or if it is too late now.

To be honest, after actually looking at the data, Martinez is a clear upgrade.

• Higher Save % (high shot-stopping value added)

• Fewer mistakes in possession

• Better passing metrics

• More crosses collected

• More saves per 100 shots faced.

I would love to be wrong mate just going off what I've seen. Hopefully this is all reflected in his performances when he puts our shirt on.

‘Offered’ to Chelsea, wouldn’t say it’s a nothing-burger, but as headlines go, Ornstein not exactly lifting the lid on anything. Sanchez has so much backing here, and he’s practically tied to the goalkeeping coach we hired, you can imagine a lot of cool heads on the board thinking he’ll turn it around after a bad start, and stick to the Penders plan.

Martinez/aging keeper was clearly never part of the plan, this would be panic button stuff (not that the original plan was all that) just think they’ll pussy out.

I think its that Sanchez is in the 16th percentile for short passes (ie 84% of peers are better than him) and in the 8th percentile for long passes (ie 92% of peers are better than him). In essence he's absolutely terrible at passing when compared to other Prem keepers.

Ex Arsenal have usually done well for us. I’d take him over Sanchez, how much?

Not sure about 76% direct to opponents, I'm guessing maybe 20% directly to opponents and the rest directly split equally between rows West Stand Lower WL 3-5) and East Stand Lower (ELS 4-ELN 6) lol

Rumours earlier in the window Juve walked away from a 11mill deal.

Is up to Alonso now if we move for him. Is clear he has some influence with Eghbali and at such a price I have to think if Alonso says go get him we do so.

Matt Law and J. Percy from the Telegraph just reported that Alonso made it clear to the club that he wants to prioritize a new #1 Keeper. Clearly, he doesn't rate Sanchez, and Penders isn't ready based on what he's seen in preseason.

Ben Roberts is well and truly the BlueCo final boss. Let's see if Alonso can best him.

Penders needs a loan. If we sign Martinez, or another keeper, find either a PL or championship club that will make him The number 1

Think shipping Sanchez to a Spanish club on loan will be easier and make more sense.

Good move, I think. Experienced and knows the league well, and imo an upgrade on Sanchez. Martinez is not perfect but a solid short term solution to one of our biggest problems.

Penders is probably too much of a gamble at this point in time, that'll give him a couple of seasons to develop, that is if he's as good as they believe he is.
