I read on another thread that Loz was taking Master Mini-Loz for his first ever visit to the pictures (that's what we old people call it) today.

So I wondered - do you remember what was the first film you saw at the cinema?

Mine was Old Mother Riley, but I can't remember which one, because a lot were made and I ended up seeing most of them. Old Mother Riley was acted by a man. She had a daughter called Kitty. At the time I thought it was hilarious - don't know if it would be now. Geezer? Did you ever see any Old Mother Riley films?

I don't remember either however it could well have been ET for me as well.

we lived abroad when I was a child on a small Pacific island that relied on a generator for electricity which, if it didn't break down, was available for a limited period in the evening (this was not electricity for the whole island, just the school my parents taught in and the surrounding school houses in which one of we lived).

Anyway the school did have access to an old reel to reel projector and once in a while arrangements would be made for a film to be sent to the island (I imagine from Fiji but I was too young to know) so that the school children could watch it. Thinking back on it now I have vague memories of some martial arts films (so probably Bruce Lee) but I could be remembering that wrong however I do have a memory (and I can only imagine it is true rather than something I have somehow made up!) of my parents managing to get a Rolling Stones concert delivered to the island and these school children who had only ever witnessed music played on biscuit tins found themselves in the 'maneapa' (local name for the hall and probably spelt wrong - the maneapa basically being a concrete foundation with a thatched roof kept up by a series of pillars but not full height walls) watching Mick strutt his stuff! If I am remembering that correctly then that is the first 'cinema' experience I can remember.

ET I saw in the US when we were making our way back to Britain and it had just come out. We also went to Universal Studios and I saw them recreate the scene where the bikes fly in front of the moon. I also (or we also, my brothers were there as well) got our parents to buy us the ET board game - it was sh*t!

All of this is memories I think I have however I am very aware of the fact that memories of your youth tend to get warped as time goes by so the facts may not be 100% accurate!

I think mine was the Jungle book, my mum is from Edinburgh so whenever we left the Island for the big smoke, she'd take us to the pictures. ET I actually saw on a bootleg VHS (my mum used to run the town's "video store" which included folk coming round to our house to view the video collection sent over from the mainland each week.

I think the first film I went to see on my own was Ghostbusters. It came to our Island and was shown in another small village's hall, shot onto a projection screen. Unfortunately the weather was a lot less hospitable than the Island Loz lived on; at least that is what I'd asume to be a fair bet

On my first ever visit to the cinema I saw this Finnish comedy that none of you have probably heard of. The first movie I went to see on my own without my parents was Innerspace.

It must have been some Disney film, like The Aristocats or The Jungle Book. If there was a new one showing during a school holiday, my mum treated me to a visit to the cinema. Grand day out!

The first grown-up film I went to see was Zulu with my dad - don't know what year that was and can't be arsed to look it up. I also remember a western that had the first time I had seen tits other than in Zulu. Have no idea what it was called but some woman with long dark hair stripped to the waist next to a part-demolished building in some desert and washeed her top half. Funny what sticks in your mind

the 1st time i ever went the cinema without the parents in tow, was to see life of brian, we missed half of it laughing so stayed into watch it again (you could do it them days)

So your life took you from a Pacific island to a remote corner of Scotland. How do you rate this.... change?

The first film I remember at the pictures was Jaws (at the elephant and castle) when I was about 3, I dunno what my old man was thinking!!!! it sh*t the life outta me!! and he bought me a rubber shark toy on the way out - to play with in the bath!!

I still jump when I see that fella's head pop out of the boat.

Not much different to be honest, the language is a little harder to understand in Scotland though.

It would appear I got it slightly wrong. Having checked with my crumbly mother I saw ET in Tasmania and it was Return of the Jedi I saw in Los Angeles. Still makes ET my first real cinema outing though as we were in Tasmania before LA.

Cant remember the name of it, but my Dad took me to see this "Matt Helm" film. Dean Martin (cool as ever) playing a tongue in cheek, James Bond style secret agent.

Saw it at the CINERAMA in Leicester Square. probably about 1966 ish.

Anyone else remeber the Matt Helm films? I think there was three in the series.

The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 when I was 3.5 years old. My dad took me to the theatre in Madison, Wisconsin...not so much to be a great father as much as he just wanted to see it himself!

My mum took me to see Dr Dolittle - must have been about 5 at the time. It was at Morden and I can still remember loving it so much that I wanted to stay in the cinema and watch it all over again. Of course in those days you got a "double bill" - not that the other film was usually worth watching from what I can recall, but the whole cinema experience was mindblowing for a 5/6 year old.
