August 11, 201510 yr Finally watched the Godfather all the way through, 8.5/10, which I realise a lot of people will think is criminally low. I think this may be because I haven't read the books and so some of the obscure things I found might actually make more sense. Maybe someone who has seen the film and read the books can answer these for me: 1. What was the point of the Sicily part and Michael getting married? Just seemed a weird and could easily have been left out as it added nothing to the story. The way he ‘won’ back Kay was a bit weird too… I guess it was supposed to show a change in his manner which would set up future films but there were surely less time consuming ways to do it! 2. Who/which family killed Sonny? It was all very Bonnie and Clyde. Been a while since I watched Godfather but: The reason he goes to Sicily is to lay low/go into hiding after murdering Capt. McCluskey. He gets married because despite being open to a life as a gangster he still finds a beautiful woman and falls in love with her but he soon learns that no one is safe when you choose to live a life within organised crime. Sicily is a massive part of Michael's development as character and learning exactly what he's signing up for.
August 11, 201510 yr Watched Léon tonight. Probably seen it 10/15 times, one of my favourites. Anyone else a fan?
August 11, 201510 yr Another excellent Kevin Spacey film! Kevin Spacey is the man. Question is, do I prefer him in American Beauty or Se7en? Probably Se7en, absolutely amazing film in my opinion. Love the dark atmosphere the director creates with the shooting style and the constant rain. Spacey, Pitt & Freeman, you know it's going to be a goodie!

Who/which family killed Sonny? It was all very Bonnie and Clyde. He fled New York after the assassination of Capt Mc Cluskey as even the Corleone families political influences could have kept the heat away from Michael. He fell for Appolonia whilst out visiting the village of Corleone and married her not knowing how long he would have to remain in Sicily. The killing of Sonny was carried in retaliation for the killing of Philip Tattalgia's son by hitmen of Barzini on behalf of the Tattalgia family who they were allied to.
August 11, 201510 yr Sorry, I know why he was sent to Sicily (although I think we only needed one shot of him there and not a mini-storyline...) I just didn't get why he got married... but fair enough with the not knowing how long he'd be there for. Thank you all for your answers though, onto Godfather 2 next!

Godfather 2 is the superior film in my opinion.
August 11, 201510 yr Godfather 2 is the superior film in my opinion. A close call, can understand both being called. The 3rd would have been up there if it wasn't for the director casting his daughter in a lead role.
August 11, 201510 yr Just watched Life of Pi. Enjoyed it, but couldn't help but think that the lead character, whilst in the boat, looked like Oscar, with Costa's 'last season' hair :)
August 12, 201510 yr Just watched Life of Pi. Enjoyed it, but couldn't help but think that the lead character, whilst in the boat, looked like Oscar, with Costa's 'last season' hair :) I know what you mean, there's definitely a resemblance. I loved the book of this and when I heard about the film I was very confused about how it could be adapted, but I think they did a very good job. I saw it at the cinema in 3D and some parts were spectacular.
August 15, 201510 yr Well, that looks sh*t tbh. Please leave classics alone!!!!! This 1000 X ...it`s got "sh*t" written all over it...just like carry on Columbus
August 15, 201510 yr Back to an old favorite last night. Trainspotting great film 9/10 The scatological scene! Brilliant!
August 15, 201510 yr This 1000 X ...it`s got "sh*t" written all over it...just like carry on Columbus Christ. I'd forgotten that film... I don't know why they bother to remake something that's v good anyway.
August 15, 201510 yr Well, that looks sh*t tbh. Please leave classics alone!!!!! I'm not sure, I think it could be good! Though it's impossible to replicate the original, I think the actors they've got are pretty much spot on. Blake Harrison is Pike all over. However, I do think it would have been better to create new characters with the original theme. All I'll be doing it while watching it is comparing them to the originals. Still looking forward to it though.

Still looking forward to it though. I hope it's good. My concerns are mainly based on the trailer - it is pretty thin and short. Perhaps there'll be longer trails later on? I'm not hopeful though, fwiw. I think your idea of keeping the concept of the original series but with newer characters is a good one.

I think your idea of keeping the concept of the original series but with newer characters is a good one. This is the problem with remaking old films and tv shows, in keeping the characters we invariably compare the old to new. Anyone over 50(younger too as its been re-shown so much) will struggle to convince themselves of their credibility, how can you replace Clive Dunn with a newer version? Far better to do like the original did when Pvt Walker died, kill the character and put a new one in his place even if Pvt Sponge didn't reach the heights of the Walker.
August 17, 201510 yr Inside Out. Hugely rated by many, I thought it was just ok. Dont see what the fuss is about
August 17, 201510 yr Gone Girl, Started off like any normal other kidnapp/missing person movie then just went a bit crazy. Enjoyed it but it was very long.
August 17, 201510 yr Far better to do like the original did when Pvt Walker died, kill the character and put a new one in his place even if Pvt Sponge didn't reach the heights of the Walker. Didn't really work when 'Wayne' died in Auf Wedersehen Pet either. Although Only Fools and Horses managed to replace a character
August 17, 201510 yr Directors cut of Leon. Never seen the extended version before, got to say I think the added scenes make the film worse.
August 18, 201510 yr Hot Pursuit. Christ, 2/10. Think it tried to get a 'The Heat' thing going on but both Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vegara were awful. How did it make it to final cut?!
