You sound like a Liverpool supporter.

We've been saying he'll come good since he signed. He's improved a lot, that's a given. And I think he should stay. But I'm still concerned that we won't sign Rooney or any other striker before the window shuts. Mourinho is a legend but I still won't have confidence that what we have is a title winning forward line.

Not trying to pick you out or anything but since you are the most common user of this thread it's easy to remember your opinion and after hearing your latest post saying you want him to go I went back a page and found this quote from last week. What do you actually want because you do change your mind a lot

Yeah I was of the opinion he should stay but that's mainly cos I'm a fan of him as a footballer, always have been. However, I'm thinking about it from a more rational and unbiased point of view now and I would have to say I think we should freshen up our forward line completely. Use Lukaku and hopefully Rooney and see how that works out. Obviously it's going to be difficult to get rid of Torres due to his wages and it likely won't happen but I have my doubts that even the brilliant Jose Mourinho can fix Torres. I honestly thought Rafa could but that failed, so all his problems are clearly psychological. It speaks volumes that Torres is now on his fifth manager since he signed for us and is no closer to becoming the goal monster he was at Liverpool. He's improved, sure. But not enough.

I have to say I am in the same boat I have always liked torres as a player and when he was at liverpool although I hated to see him do well I always thought to myself I'd love to have him at chelsea.

I think the easiest way round this situation is to accept he is never going to be as good as he was when he was at liverpool. That isn't to say he can't achieve similiar results though. Along with lukaku and ba I see no reason why he can't contribute a decent tally of goals this seaon to help us to the title. Many will disagree but I felt last season his performances improved when he had the competition of ba and I felt he out performed ba to be honest. People will say ahhh he doesn't like having competition he likes to be the main man and the only man but that's not true. Having a player like drogba competing with you is a bit different to having the talented but raw lukaku and a good player like ba competing with you. I think this will do him good. He knows if he isn't performing jose has 2 other striker who are more than capable of coming into the team and showing torres up. There is no way out for torres this season like there was last season. If he isn't doing the job he will be benched and jose won't think twice about it.

Yeah, that all makes sense to me. I personally don't understand WHAT goes through Torres's head to be honest. Simply because he goes on about thriving on competition but after our CL win he was throwing his toys out the pram on the happiest night of our history because he was benched in favour of Drogba. Let's face it he was going on about wanting to be our main man and our number one and if we didn't make him that he would have to 'reconsider his future'. But now he's saying he thrives on competition. It all seems a bit confusing to me.

He was mis translated I believe. Anyway moving on from that if he says he is ready for the competition then I guess we have to take his word for it and like I said there is no hiding place for him this year. I'm sure he won't want to be shown up by a youngster like lukaku so he is going to have to step up. If he doesn't then there are no excuses and will have to get used to the bench. i have a feeling he will do the business though

Not going to say I agree there. I had that feeling last season. And the season before that. Hopefully I'm wrong. Either way I just hope we can sign Rooney.

We won't be signing Rooney.

Lukaku, Ba and Torres is out strike force.

We won't be signing Rooney.

Can not in all honesty believe Utd will keep a unhappy whinging disrupted player on a shed load of money per game/week, never has been their way, if Moyes starts anew trend with this, well good luck to him can not see him lasting to long with that sort of policy.

I'm happy with Torres, Lukaku and Ba. Not going to mention pecking order, I think there'll be a lot of rotation depending who we're up against, I can see them all have good seasons.

Can't see Rooney being added.

I really find it difficult to believe that Torres is being so easily forgiven here after 3 seasons of pure crap. Honestly if Jose does get the best out of him it would go down as one of his greatest achievements.

Way I see it is that torres has contributed to a few trophys we have won in the past 3 seasons. He hasn't been what we hoped he would be and in the premier league in particular he hasn't produced anything near what we needed him to but he has done well in the cups in my opinion and helped us win trophys.

I forgive him so easily purely because I don't want us to have another flop striker. It's more hopeful then believing he will actually change...

Torres is absolutely incapable of producing against half-decent teams. That's because he's crap.

Jose is coming out with all this guff for a reason, and as far as I can tell, it suggests he's not very confident he can land Rooney.

If he's stuck with Torres, as he may be, he may just have to bolster his confidence, and that's what he's doing.

If we do indeed get Rooney we may want to sell Torres although by then it may be too late in the transfer window and Torres may not agree to a move.

Jose's comments just may make him a little more appealing to possible suitors.

Lukaku will be ahead of Torres in the pecking order if Torres stays, make no mistake about that.

He may be young and inexperienced and he may need a lot of developing but he's already miles ahead of Torres and everybody knows it, or if they don't, they should wake up and smell the bloody coffee.

Great to see the Messiah for the masses apparently backing Torres, lets see what Jose can do, he did produce one surge through 3 defenders, and a weak shot against Inter, But!!....

Mourinho's words on Torres seem to be like he's making the best out of a bad situation. If we don't land Rooney like DB said, Lukaku will be number one by a mile.

Lukaku will be ahead of Torres in the pecking order if Torres stays, make no mistake about that.

I reckon it's more likely Lukaku will be eased in as an impact sub initially. He'll have a harder time up top for Chelsea than he did at West Brom. Our style of attacking play is entirely different to WBA's, not to mention every opposition will be lined up considerably more defensively against us than he experienced there.

As for Torres, while I hardly consider him an elite striker, he's far from as bad as you're making out. Highly doubt Lukaku will immediately jump above him in the pecking order.

Jose's just answering the questions that journalists are desparate for a headline from, and he's essentially said he'll work to get the best out of all of his players. Pretty much standard Mourinho; the blunt truth.

I thought it was a pretty standard response. He's only just becoming familiar with the majority of the players. I doubt he spent much time studying Torres or any of the rest of the squad while he's been managing other teams, preparing for other opposition.

The journalists want a "Torres is my number 1" or "Torres will leave" headline, and he's not going to give that. Torres is part of the squad he's working with, and he'll make his selections based on how they train and perform for him. Past performances, good and bad, won't matter much to Mourinho.

Pretty much the same response he's given when questioned about Terry or Lampard.

Exactly, same goes for anyone in the team.

Jose isn't the type to select players on past merits or exclude them on past failures. If they work well for him, he'll play them. In Torres' case it's really just a matter of whether you think he will do that. I think he will.

Edit: That's not to suggest I don't think Ba or Lukaku will either. Just re-affirming my point that I'm happy with the strike force we have.

Torres could produce really well if we'd have a reliable first choice striker in the squad. Remember how well he played in the closing stages of the season coming from the bench. He was actually very good. His pace is very good so if we could utilize him as an impact player he'd do really well. Remember Barca away and the Final against Bayern when he came on. Goal against Barca and he won the corner which led to Drogba's goal and there are other examples as well.
