I can't think of any player that has become better by growing a beard. Look at Pirlo. He's not been the same since he got that awful beard over the summer.

We need a "Bring back the beard" group started, some of the old players in the 70`s and 80`s were awesome. My favourite was Micky Droy, nice and trimmed, showed he meant business.

Although I'm opposed to facial hair, with the exception of eyebrows and eyelashes, I can accept a 3-day stubble. Mata's beard seems more like a 7-day stubble to me. I thought he had less facial hair when he arrived, or am I completely wrong?

I've had a beard for a good few years now. The past two years they've become increasingly popular, thanks, I suspect, to Gerard Butler. It was only a matter of time before footballers started to get in on the act.

I'm all for it.

I'm 30 and I can't grow a beard, so I say well played Sir Mata.

I like it, it really suits his facial structure and it's ironic to see an uber-masculine beard on someone as diminutive as him.

I've always wanted a beard. A big bushy beard. But my skin is so sensitive that as soon as it starts to grow it starts to itch and I get all red and stuff. I've tried it a few times. Moustache, normal beard, goatee, beard like the police in Village People - nothing works.

I've settled for a "soul patch" (had no idea it was called that until now). That's the only thing that works.
