I provided a bit more than "just accept it". And have for months.

Seems the Cech side has a far higher burden of proof than the other.

(Also because he isn't the best GK in the world) ./banter

They dont, the Cuortois side could easily say the same. Both sides have provided plenty of "evidence" for their stance. Its all down to opinions at this point, which is highly subjective. Your opinion isnt enough for people to change their mind and acting like yours is superior is just a tad hypocritical.

Can't help but feel that the Courtois in camp are also guilty of that.

Not at all.

How can it be short-sighted to be looking at Chelsea's LONG-TERM future? Most of us have said, that right now there is little to choose between them. They are both great keepers and in an ideal world we would "keep" both. But we know that just can't happen and what it comes down to for me is the fact that one is 32 (and has recently suffered a bad injury), the other 22 and that makes it a complete No-Brainer.

That's the key for me it'll be really hard to keep both but we can't risk losing a potentially world class talent in Courtois over a couple more seasons of Petr Cech. That's realistically what we are talking about. 2-3 years more of a Chelsea legend or start building a new Chelsea legend. It took Utd 10 years to replace Schmeichel, Arsenal still haven't replaced Seaman. Courtois looks to be right up there in terms of ability and at only 22 has years left in him to develop further.

If I were Chelsea I'd be shoving a new contract at him NOW. Then potentially allow him to choose his fate next year after pre season. He'll know after a few pre season games training alongside Cech whether he's good enough to take over full time. If he's not sure, he can always choose another loan. If he doesn't sign a contract we HAVE to make a decision this summer which will please all parties.

I for one would not be adverse to allowing Petr the choice of going to another club to see out the end of his career if that's what he wants. He won't be short of offers that's for sure and I'm sure the prospect of playing for Real under Ancelotti would entice him.

I'd call it short-sighted to want to turf out our established great keeper who still has years left in him. Cech doesn't need replacing. 32 is still young for a keeper.

Part of the problem is we all watch Cech week in, week out and he comes under the microscope, whereas many will only see Courtois in highlight reels and gifs of his saves. As an example, earlier in this thread you mentioned Cech letting in soft goals, yet Courtois also made a number of howlers last season. If Cech had made them, they'd be put forward as evidence that he needs to be replaced with Courtois! To me it's a 'grass is greener somewhere else' mentality. People get too caught up in long-termism when football is really a short-term game.

How long will Cech last?

He's had a pretty bad injury list during his time here and IMO he's not as good as he once was.

I've watched plenty of La Liga to know Courtois is not just a flash in the pan type, he is a world class keeper who keeps improving with time.

No one wants Cech 'booted' out but let them both fight for the shirt.

Football can be a short term game if you want to spend millions of pounds not winning anything with donkeys on the pitch. Look at the dross Fergie bought whilst trying to replace Schmeichel, or Keane, Giggs, Neville and Scholes who he had to play until he was a liability. Naturally replacing players at the right time, organically is the way forward. Not coming to an absolute stop where you have no choice but to replace players. We have a ready made player, proven at the highest level who will cost NOTHING at will conceivably be our first choice GK for the next 10 years. Coming into the team, at an albeit young age but with experience and ability.

That is the exact situation our youth development (and ever other teams youth development programme) strives for. You don't want to replace guys too late with someone who may not be ready (Cleverly), at the same time you don't want players who are ready getting frustrated waiting their time on the bench (Sturridge). We are in virtually the prime position here and I'd hate to see us blow our chances with our youth. This goes for Lukaku too.

It's a tough choice to make:

Cech is tried & trusted. I never worry when I see him in the starting XI because the mistakes are minimal. He may have another 5 years left to go! Although he isn't going to get 'any better' in time... There is no sign of decline!

Courtois is great & on par with big Pete... He could possibly be with us for the next 10 years +

However, he doesn't have the loyalty Cech does!

Cech obviously loves Chelsea & in our trophy'less seasons he always stands by us. The young Belgium doesn't know us. What's to say he will 'settle' in London? Maybe his family have come to love the Spanish climate.

We sell or unsettle Cech & within two years Courtois hands in a transfer request!!!!

....... I'm glad I'm not Mourinho!!!!!!

So say we keep Cech and let Courtois slip through our hands and then in say, 4 - 5 seasons time we need another keeper but there are no top keepers available? What then?

That's why I'm looking forward. You are probably right - Cech doesn't need replacing but we just so happen to have a ready made replacement who will hopefully avoid us having any keeper issues for the next decade. Perhaps Cech does have years left in him. Perhaps (following all the injuries) he doesn't?

I can understand if you love Cech, you don't want to see him replaced when as you say, 32 is not old for a keeper. But when I weigh it all up, if I was Mourinho and had to make a decision, I would have to go with the younger man.

But say Courtois gets injured, or doesn't fulfil his potential, what then? We end up seeing Cech playing for one of our rivals, while we're left searching for his replacement. In this instance, I think if it's not broke, don't fix it.

I'd much rather we sold Courtois and used the money to buy players who would improve us now, and worry about what happens in 4-5 years time, in 4-5 years time. In any case, assuming we're still wealthy and in the CL, it shouldn't be that hard to find a top keeper somewhere.

It's nothing to do with loving Cech or sentiment. I liked Drogba and Lampard too, but it was right for them to move on when they did. Equally, we were right to keep JT, who's in the same age bracket as the above, because he's still our best centre-half.

Top keepers are very hard to find! They aren't like strikers where there are plenty out there and you can just go and get one. Keepers are a rare breed and we just happen to be lucky enough to have 2 of the worlds best on our books.

One has had some very bad injuries and is getting on a bit and one is young and fresh and ready to prove a point. Just makes no sense to get rid of a player no matter what position that is 10 years younger and just as good if not better than the current player.

I actually disagree. I think that finding a striker is harder only because he really has to do most of his job by himself.

A keeper has a whole team in front of him and if that team is working well together then it makes a keepers job easier.

If one is to be sold then we would surely get more money for Courtois and I dont buy into that Cech only has a few more years in him like some people on here are saying.

If think if either one of them goes it will be harder to find an ok back up keeper.

I say keep them both and make them fight it out for a place in the team. They are both under contract. After this season we can take a look at how both of them are doing and make our minds up then.

If you honestly believe that is going to happen I'll come and join you in that place called Utopia you must be living in!

All he can do is come back and prove himself against Cech. If he comes in and doesn't cut the mustard, then he will go back on loan, but somehow i don't see him not being good enough. At the end of the day, we can't keep him on loan forever more; he needs to come back to prove himself at the very least.

Tell me why this wouldnt happen. They cant leave because we have them both on a contract.

There are plenty of players under contracts with clubs - doesn't mean they stay.

Both keepers know they are good enough to be No.1 any top club. Neither are going to settle for keeping the bench warm, nor should they. It's a lovely idea that we have possibly the best two keepers in the world fighting for the No.1 shirt but the reality is that won't happen.

Tell that to post Schmeichel Fergie. Tiaibi, Bosnich, Carroll, Barthez, Van de Gouw, Tim Howard

Or Arsenal post Seaman, Manninger, Wright, Fabianski, Lehman, Almunia, Mannone, now Schnitzel.

Finding the right goalkeepers who fits it with a defence is a lot harder than finding the right striker. The defence is a unit, stars aren't required, it's about finding players who compliment each other and work well as a team. Strikers tend to se lone wolfs who thrive on being the main man, the best ones, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Messi can win a game regardless of their poor team mates.

Edit;

Now I've re-read this it adds a lot credence short term to the Cech argument, however if Courtois come in and shows his abilities, we should have no doubts long term about making him no1 this season. It's less of a risk IMO bringing him in now than looking for Cechs replacement in 2-3 years time, when we HAVE to replace him.

Cech's injured anyway, so Courtois is clearly going to get his shot. As long as he doesn't mess up badly before Cech recovers, it seems inevitable that Cech will move on either in January or next summer. It's sad to see a legend leave, but it's just the normal way of things. It's not that much different to the Cudicini / Cech situation, except Carlo made the unusual choice to stay (and I'll always love him for it).

How many would have seen us keep Carlo in the team, Golden Glove winner the year before, instead of an untried, untested 22 year old who had only ever played in France? Carlo was only 30 then and Petr was bought in as his understudy. Its a case of if the right player is available for the right money at the right time.
