I would hate for us to get rid of Cech to allow Courtois to be number one. For starters no one knows is Courtois will adapt to our league right away. De Gea came from Spain and looked like Bambi on ice in his first season.

Secondly we have struggled for years with not finding a good enough back up keeper for Cech to really push him for his place in the team so why would we do the same with Courtois by selling Cech? And Thirdly I dont like the idea of selling Cech just to please Courtois. They should both have to fight for their place in the team. No one should just be given a starting spot. As the world class team that we are, we will be playing a lot of games next season so there is plenty of games to go around.

I disagree with you, having them both would only cause disruption. They are both world class and want to be starting. Also, goalies don't rotated as much as outfield players except in case of an injury, Schwarzer is more than adequate back up. We should make a decision and either sell Cech or loan Courtois out again.

Schwarzer is no longer our player. I think for one season at least it would be best to keep both.

If Courtois came in and carried on his world class form, would you still be disappointed? I'm kind of on the fence with this one, I agree it would be a gamble, but I also think Courtois is the real deal. I very much doubt the club will be able to sell Cech until he proves his fitness, following what is a very nasty injury for goalkeeper. With Courtois contract running down, we are going to have to clarify the goalkeeper position over the summer, and there is no decision that will please everybody unfortunately.

No one said this was an easy decision. Some times real tough choices have to be made in football and this is one of them. It's not as if Cech has gone down-hill, we all know he is still one of the best. But that said, those saying we should keep Cech as No.1 - well I can't help thinking they are letting sentiment cloud their judgement. Courtois is now widely recognised as the best young keeper in the world and we simply cannot risk losing out on his services for possibly the next decade or so, just to get another couple of seasons out of Cech - however much he may be loved and has done for us during his time here.

Selling him and bringing in someone who hasnt played a minute of Premier League football before is not a smart move imo. Im not saying dont bring him in but i am saying keep them both next season and let them fight it out. They are both under conract so the choice is down to the club where they both play.

I don't see too many keepers who are better than Courtois jsut now and that is him being only 21/22.

Don't want to be picky but he let a number of soft goals in last season. ALL keepers make mistakes and I know Cech certainly makes fewer than most. For me this just comes down to looking long-term and like it or not, Courtois is the better long-term option.

Those are all strikers though, different area of play. Goalkeepers should have an easier time adapting. Hell, Tim Howard became a star in the Premier League and he is crap in my opinion.

That's because they kept buying a load of old sh*t instead of buying a proven keeper.

 

Bosnich, Taibi, Howard and Carroll were never going to be a successful long term solution.

 

Courtois has shown his pedigree (and won things) in a good team and defense over the last three years.  

I dont doubt that Courtois is a long term option but only if he can adapt to our league.

Do you watch many athletico games? He isn't anything like de gea! He is massive and commands his box brilliantly. He wouldn't need to adapt his game because he already has it.

De Gea wasn't even that bad when he joined United, it was only because VDS had been so good that people were looking for faults in his game.

 

I don't think many goalkeepers with decent reputations have come to the Premier League and flopped?

Why are people saying cech is not appreciated enough just because people think someone 10 years younger and of a similiar standard should be playing instead of him? Everyone knows how good cech has been for us and it will be a sad day when he eventually moves on.

 

It would be different if we were sitting here today talking about buying courtois and replacing cech with him but the fact is we already have this kid on our books. He's 23 and keeps being shoved out on loan year in year out despite being one of the best keepers in the world and proving it at such a young age. He isn't going to wait around forever wondering when his chance will come!

 

Cech is still a great keeper but now is the time to bring in the youngster in my opinion because if he is sold and in 2 or 3 years time we need a keeper to replace cech we will be made to look very stupid!

We already look stupid for buying a keeper when we didn't need one and having to replace a club legend early just to accommodate the one we bought to not look stupid twice.

No offence, but I cant understand how we look foolish for purchasing a teenager for around 6million who, in 3 short years, has transformed himself into one of the best in the world at his position with a value likely to now be well in excess of 30million.  I don't care if we had Cech, Schmiechel and Kahn on the books, that's fantastic business financially and puts the club in a real position of strength football wise.  Talk about first world problems!

So they found it neigh on impossible to get a replacement keeper for years, that is why we must get Courtois in to our starting line up now,

so we do not suffer the same pain.

We can command a decent fee for Cech and that must be a consideration. There is never a good time to make a change but this is without question the most sensible solution.
