Oscar - Little Diamond

Featured Replies

Great news for a great player IMO. Had a poor run for part of last season but has come back stronger this year and will have a major roll to play for Chelsea over the next number of years.

Timetowaste you have been a major poster criticising Oscar when his form dipped last year and even though I don't think that you will ever be a fan you should see that he has turned that round an is a major player. As for improving players in our team you could say that for most our players if you want to trawl all the major leagues in the world and replace them hypothetically.

Oscar works hard and that's great but his inconsistency and his general play at times lead me to believe we could do better, would anybody here rather have Oscar over Reus?

They play in different positions so for Oscar's position, yes I would rather have him.

I've never been impressed with Oscar really you're right, I think for me I've not gotten over that horrible second half of the season he had last year, he just didn't look bothered at all, yes he had a World Cup coming up but we pay his wages and the fact that it seemed like he wasn't putting in the effort really annoyed me. I wouldn't say I'll never be a fan, but to me he hasn't really improved since we signed him. I used Reus as an example of improving the squad but what I'd ideally like to see is Oscar benched, have Cesc put as our number 10 and sign a proper CM. Whenever Cesc is our number 10 we seem to create so many more chances.

All in all I just don't think he's that good.

Your eyes must be painted on

Obvisiously I disagree, I think he's a tremendous player. However I know where you are coming from in not rating a player. I happen to think Schurrle is awful, the worst player in the squad and I dread seeing him anywhere near the team. I concede that he may be useful coming off the bench now and again. Now I know lots of people here rate him highly and this post will annoy some of them but I just don't see it and would happily see him move on in Jan.

Great news, we have an awesome team building up. I hope he ease off with the 2 footed dive in tackle, sooner or later he will connect with someone and get 3 weeks off. I do love his aggression and work rate through.

Different type players but yes, 100%, but we should do everything we can to have both

I also agree about Schurrle, he makes the occasional impact when he comes on as a sub but as a starter he very rarely plays well which is a big problem. For me it's a no brainer between Willian and Schurrle.

With all of this being said about Oscar, I'm not somebody who wills somebody to do badly just so I can say "I told you so" like a fair few people on here do, he's been in good form as of late (apart from the Liverpool game) and I'm delighted, I want the team to do well, the main problem is his consistency but if he can play like he has done a few times this season regularly then I have no problem with his being a starter for us, however, currently I don't see him as a 'world class' player and I think he is pretty replaceable.

I guess we won't be shipping him off any time soon then, shame.

Thought this was sarcastic, apparently not. Start of the season, I wouldn't have been against selling him if a bid of around 30-40m came in. Now I definitely want to keep him though I don't rate him as highly as most on here seem to do. And I have no doubt that that Jose wants to keep him too which is good enough for me. A very useful player to have in the team.

He's the laziest player in our team. I don't ever see him do any running, tackling or key passing. Even Courtois is more involved than he is.

Not good enough.

This is so obviously sarcastic. But having been wrong above, I'm not blaming people for missing it.

Schurrle is NOT the worst player in the squad. At the moment he is in poor form but last season i thought he did ok, he wasn't brilliant but he picked up some important goals for us. Schurrle coming off the bench and having his best games for us is also a myth, his best games and his goals have mostly come from the games he has started. If i had a choice between him and Willian last season to be 1st choice it would have been Schurrle. There are worse players than Schurrle in the squad. Plus he only just turned 24, it's a bit early in his career to be giving up on him.

Back to Oscar, i think he has improved a lot on what we were seeing last season, but he is still very sloppy at times in possession of the ball, especially in games against the top sides. Saying that, i think he has actually been one of the best players for us this season. Diego Costa, Hazard, Fabregas, Matic and Oscar have had great starts.

Fantastic news and great to see him sign up for another five years.

I can't wait to see how he develops and I must say he's been excellent this season after a decline in form in the second half of the year last season.

I was disappointed we sold Mata & kept Oscar last season I must admit, but he's come on leaps and bounds this season and doesn't appear to have suffered a WC hangover. Hopefully he can carry on his workman like performances as well as his flair into the deepest, darkest Winter nights.

Its obvious Oscar took the foot off the pedal last season to minimise the chance of injury for the World Cup in his native country, but I don't think you can really blame him for that. Its a once in a lifetime thing for him, when will the World Cup be in Brazil again?

For such a small guy he is a tremendous fighter, Jose is changing his style a bit, he is a battler with a lot of silk. We have even seen the best of him yet at all, but we will.

He is capable of setting up and scoring so many goals.

Oscar works hard and that's great but his inconsistency and his general play at times lead me to believe we could do better, would anybody here rather have Oscar over Reus?

I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd rather have Reus but like someone said they don't have the same role.

I think Oscar has much to imrpove on because he hasn't kept the same standards up as he did in his first few months.

He's only 23 though and he does work hard for the team, he cna only improve too.

It's good we have him tied down now and hopefully he can push on.

I've been too harsh with him at times but I appreciate the power of work he puts in.

Dominic Fifield of The Guardian writing for BT Sport regarding Oscar's new contract:

Post-match in the tunnel at Stamford Bridge earlier this month, Tony Fernandes and members of his defeated Queens Park Rangers staff trudging out into the evening, and Willian breaks away from delivering his assessment of Chelsea's west London derby win to clamp hands with the contest's outstanding performer.

“This man is just a match winner,” says the Brazilian of Oscar as the younger man attempts to shuffle beyond his compatriot and away. “He is outstanding. I'm so happy to see him playing so well. He is a pleasure to be alongside.”

The Seleção playmaker appeared almost sheepish as the compliments gushed forth, his instinct to shy away from all the acclaim, though he might have to grow accustomed to such praise.

Chelsea have appeared a team transformed at times this season, the focus inevitably drawn to Diego Costa's brawn and constant plunder up front, to Cesc Fàbregas' shrewd supply-line, or even Eden Hazard's steady development into a world-class talent from flank to central dribbling role.

Yet that forward-thinking trio's effervescence is no longer dazzling the world at the expense of the influence exerted by Oscar at their side.

This is a player who, after two years of fitful form – occasionally superb, sometimes anonymous – is conjuring up consistent excellence to justify all those heady reviews upon his arrival from Internacional.

The 23-year-old feels like a revelation. Where he had offered flashes of his quality in that first season most regularly in the slightly less frenetic pace of European competition, and then stumbled into a lull courtesy of injuries and anticipation of a home World Cup finals last term, now he is supplying drive, bite and brilliance.

The goals stand out: that sumptuous free-kick at Selhurst Park, scene of an embarrassment in the Spring, to deflate Crystal Palace; the staggering first-time finish with the outside of his right boot from Fàbregas' pass to startle Rob Green and pierce QPR. He has four to his name from 15 games at present and, while no Chelsea midfielder may ever muster the kind of haul enjoyed so often by Frank Lampard in his pomp, the Brazilian is still on course for an impressive tally.

He is a clever passer, a player now on the same wavelength as Hazard or Willian, Costa or Fàbregas, with the weight of his delivery and busy energy to receive a return offering team-mates an option whenever in possession in enemy territory. More appealing to Jose Mourinho, one suspects, is his contribution without the ball.

He may be relatively slight of frame but Oscar can tackle, more often legitimately, yet he is also willing to be niggly. If an opponents' counter-attack needs to be suffocated at source, he is often the one checking momentum with a timely clip or lunge. It is easy to pronounce such tactics cynical, but managers would not concur and, indeed, cherish such selflessness.

There have been three bookings to date. He will sit out a suspension or two this season though, given the offences are often delivered in the opposing half, plenty of his fouls tend to go unsanctioned. Such gamesmanship can be better disguised further away from goal.

Mourinho counts his favoured central playmaker a developing talent. “Last year I don't remember one single Brazilian player who had a good end of season ahead of the World Cup,” he said, suggesting too many players across Europe, not just in the Premier League, were anxious at the prospect of missing out on featuring as hosts of Fifa's jamboree.

“This season I'm so happy (with Oscar's contribution). He is still a young kid, but he has had a big evolution and he is benefiting from the evolution of the whole team. He's not a No10 who plays with the ball at his feet. He's a No10 who looks back, looks to the side and sees where the team need him to move to get the ball or create balance. He has grown, mentally and tactically, which has allowed him to be a fantastic player. Can he still improve physically? Of course. But people forget how young he is.”

Chelsea have not. While their players were jetting off around the globe with the Premier League back in a lull and the international window upon us, the leaders announced on Monday that they had pinned their No 8 down to a new five-year contract at the club.

Hazard will follow suit at some stage soon – and there will inevitably be more fanfare when that particular is announced given the clubs who covet his services – with those creative talents, combined with the summer's lavish arrivals, established as the bedrock of this eye-catching side.

There had been occasions over the last two years when Oscar's impact has been eclipsed by those around him. These days, he is more than capable of hogging the limelight by himself.

no player beats Pirlo and Buffon in two ball touches by luck.

this shows class and genius. There other facets to a football player of course (work rate, stamina, injuries, agressivity, etc, etc). But at least class and genius we know he have.

I wonder if he'd been watching this bloke

I personally am surprised about how good a season, he's had. When he first joined I thought he'd be similar to Kaka was for AC Milan. The skill and goals against Juventus above still

Like some of the other posters, I would have been very tempted to sell him for £35-45 million in the summer as he seemed to have drifted out of the team by the end of last season.

However what a season he's having so far... long may it continue for five more years!

Coming into his own now definitely.

Last season he seemed to go off the boil and imo it was definitely due to the world cup. Let's hope he kicks on and becomes one of the best AMs in the world and as effective for us as Mata was. Needs to regularly get assists and goals to do so imo.

Another brilliant performance on Saturday, his all round game getting better and better, especially his long ball game

Like a few more goals tbh, but he is first pick for me.

He has a greater role in the team this season, I think taking the number 8 shirt his mentality has changed too. Hopefully he can keep it going through the Winter period.
